Chapter 13: The Lie That Finally Went Too Far

I watched my stepdaughter hold that handwritten statement in front of hundreds of people.

Her hands were shaking.

Her eyes were red.

And Vanessa stood beside her, gently rubbing her shoulder like a loving mother comforting a frightened child.

Richard adjusted the microphone.

“Brianna has been living in fear,” he announced.

“We've tried to handle this privately, but Marcus Williams has become increasingly unstable.””

A reporter raised her hand.

“Are you saying Mr. Williams threatened physical violence?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Yes. He threatened Brianna after she refused to cooperate with his financial demands.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

It was an extraordinary performance.

The woman who had used my identity to obtain a fraudulent vehicle loan was now presenting herself as a victim.

The girl who had admitted helping Richard steal my personal information was being portrayed as an innocent witness.

And the man who had attempted to take my company was standing behind them, pretending to be its rescuer.

Then a reporter asked the question I hadn't expected.

“Mrs. Williams, do you have evidence supporting these allegations?””

Vanessa nodded.

“We have a written statement from Brianna and medical documentation showing Marcus's deteriorating condition.””

Richard raised a document.

“Additionally, our legal team has obtained authorization to assume temporary management of the company.””

I looked at Susan.

“They're doing this before the investigation is finished.””

Susan was already calling the company's board members.

“We need to stop them from using the company name and assets while the ownership dispute is unresolved.””

My phone rang.

Emily.

“Dad, are you watching?””

“Yes.””

“That's not true. None of it is true.””

“I know, sweetheart.””

“Brianna looks terrified.””

I watched the screen.

She did.

Her lips were trembling, and she kept glancing toward Vanessa.

“Emily, I need you to stay somewhere safe. Don't approach them.””

“Dad, I want to come with you.””

“I'll call you shortly.””

I ended the call.

Susan turned toward me.

“Marcus, there's something else. The press conference is being broadcast live. If we can establish that the statement was coerced, it could undermine their entire narrative.””

I nodded.

“Then let's establish it.””

We drove directly to headquarters.

By the time we arrived, the press conference had ended.

Reporters crowded the entrance.

Security guards stood outside the building.

Richard had placed two men at the reception desk, and neither recognized me as the company's founder.

“I need to enter my office,” I told the guard.

“I'm sorry, sir. The building is currently under restricted access.””

I stared at him.

“This is my building.””

He checked his tablet.

“Your access has been suspended.””

Susan stepped forward.

“We're counsel for Marcus Williams. We have documentation disputing the authority of the individuals currently occupying the premises.””

The guard looked uncertain.

Then someone behind him called my name.

“Marcus!””

Linda Parker hurried toward us.

She looked exhausted.

“Please, come with me.””

The guard stepped aside.

Linda led us through a side entrance into a small conference room.

She closed the door.

“Richard has been telling everyone that you resigned.””

“I didn't.””

“I know. I told the board.””

“What happened?””

She looked toward the glass wall.

“Vanessa brought Brianna here this morning. They had her rehearse the statement several times.””

My stomach tightened.

“Rehearse?””

Linda nodded.

“Richard told her exactly what to say. He even corrected her when she used the wrong words.””

Susan immediately took out her phone.

“Did you record any of this?””

Linda hesitated.

Then she opened her laptop.

“I saved the security footage.””

She played a video from the executive hallway.

Vanessa stood beside Brianna, holding a piece of paper.

“Read it again,” Vanessa instructed.

Brianna's voice was barely audible.

“Marcus said he would make me disappear if I told anyone about the money.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. Say he threatened to hurt you.””

Brianna swallowed.

“Marcus threatened to hurt me.””

“Better. And look at the camera when you say it.””

The recording continued.

Richard entered the hallway.

“How long is this going to take?””

Vanessa replied, “She's nervous.””

Richard looked directly at Brianna.

“Listen carefully. If you don't do this, you'll lose the apartment, the trust fund, and everything we've promised you.””

Brianna began crying.

“I don't want to lie anymore.””

Richard leaned closer.

“Then you'll have to explain why you helped us obtain Marcus's documents.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Susan replayed the final few seconds.

Then she turned toward Linda.

“Can you preserve the original recording and confirm when it was created?””

“Yes.””

“Good. Do not send it to anyone except the investigators and our legal team.””

I looked at the screen.

Brianna had been threatened with the consequences of her own actions.

She was trapped between the people who had manipulated her and the truth she'd been avoiding.

I wanted to rescue her.

But I also knew that her false statement could destroy my life.

Susan contacted Officer Bennett and provided the recording.

Within an hour, investigators arrived at the building.

Richard was still inside.

When they entered the conference room, his confidence disappeared.

“What's this about?”” he demanded.

Officer Bennett remained calm.

“We need to ask you some questions concerning the documents used during today's press conference.””

Richard looked at me.

“You're making a terrible mistake, Marcus.””

I didn't answer.

Then Vanessa entered.

“What is happening?””

Officer Bennett showed her the video.

She watched herself instructing Brianna to repeat the false allegations.

For the first time, she had no explanation ready.

“That recording is taken out of context,” she said.

Officer Bennett asked, “What context would make it appropriate to coach a minor to make a false accusation?””

Vanessa looked at Brianna.

“Tell them what happened.””

Brianna lowered her head.

Richard stepped forward.

“She's a minor. She shouldn't be questioned without proper safeguards.””

Susan interrupted.

“We agree. Her interests should be protected independently, without pressure from either parent or any other adult.””

Officer Bennett nodded.

Then another investigator entered the room carrying a document.

“Mr. Lawson, we need to discuss the identity you used to obtain the apartment lease and the financial accounts.””

Richard's face changed.

“What identity?””

The investigator placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Richard beside a man whose face was almost identical to his.

Two different names appeared beneath the photographs.

Peter Lawson.

Richard Lawson.

The investigator spoke quietly.

“Which one are you going to tell us is your real name?””

Richard said nothing.

Then his phone began ringing.

The screen displayed Vanessa's name.

He looked at it.

She looked at him.

And suddenly, I understood something.

These two people had been working together for months.

But neither trusted the other anymore.

Vanessa finally spoke.

“Richard, tell them everything.””

He slowly turned toward her.

May you like

Then he smiled.

“You first.””
