Chapter 14: The Recording That Exposed Everyone
The room fell silent.
Vanessa stared at Richard.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard leaned against the table.
“You wanted this plan. You arranged the apartment. You provided Marcus's financial information. You brought Brianna into it.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You said you would protect us.””
“I did protect you. Until you started making mistakes.””
Officer Bennett interrupted.
“Both of you will have an opportunity to provide statements. For now, nobody leaves until we establish what happened.””
Richard laughed.
“You think you can keep me here?””
The investigator replied calmly.
“We're conducting an investigation. You'll need to cooperate with lawful requests.””
Susan pulled me aside.
“Marcus, stay out of their arguments. We need to focus on protecting your company and Emily.””
I nodded.
Across the room, Brianna was sitting beside another officer.
She looked exhausted.
I approached slowly.
“Can I speak with her?””
The officer nodded.
I sat in the chair beside her.
“Are you okay?””
She shook her head.
“I'm sorry.””
I looked at her.
“For what?””
“For the statement. For everything.””
I took a breath.
“Brianna, what you said today could have put me in prison.””
She began crying.
“I know.””
“Why did you do it?””
She looked toward Vanessa.
“Mom said Richard had everything under control. She said if I didn't cooperate, he'd tell the police I helped him steal your information.””
“Did you?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then you need to tell the truth. Not what your mother wants. Not what Richard wants. The truth.””
She wiped her cheeks.
“Will you ever forgive me?””
I looked at the girl I'd helped raise.
“I don't know yet. But I'll make sure you have the chance to tell the truth without anyone threatening you.””
She nodded.
Then she reached into her handbag.
“I have something.””
She handed me a small USB drive.
“Richard gave it to Mom. She told me to hide it.””
I looked at Susan.
She immediately instructed the investigators to preserve it.
“What is on it?”” I asked.
Brianna swallowed.
“Everything.””
The investigators arranged for the device to be examined.
Inside were dozens of files, including recorded conversations, financial spreadsheets, and scanned documents.
One audio recording was particularly revealing.
Vanessa's voice came through first.
“Marcus will never agree to the transfer.””
Richard answered, “He doesn't need to. We already have his information.””
“But what if he goes to the police?””
“Then we use the medical report.””
“And if that doesn't work?””
Richard laughed.
“Then we make him look like the kind of man nobody believes.””
Vanessa asked, “What about Emily?””
Richard's answer was chilling.
“She becomes the financial connection. Once her name appears on the loan documents, Marcus will do whatever it takes to protect her.””
Then Vanessa said something that made me grip the table.
“I don't want Emily hurt.””
Richard replied, “Nobody is going to hurt her. We just need her signature to appear on the paperwork.””
I stopped the recording.
Susan looked at me.
“That's important evidence.””
But there was another file.
It was an email chain between Richard and an unknown recipient.
The subject line read:
*THE ORIGINAL AGREEMENT.*
The first message contained instructions about my father's trust.
The second contained a scanned copy of a document I'd never seen.
I opened it.
It was a letter written by my father three months before he died.
The letter was addressed to his attorney.
If Marcus ever marries again, I want the family trust protected from anyone who might seek control through his personal relationships.
I read it slowly.
My father had been concerned about exactly what was happening.
The letter continued:
My son has a generous heart. Sometimes he mistakes financial generosity for proof of loyalty. I don't want anyone exploiting that weakness.
I looked at Susan.
“Why wasn't this included in the original estate documents?””
She examined the letter.
“Because this appears to be correspondence, not an executed amendment. It may help explain your father's intentions, but we need the formal trust documents to determine what controls.””
I nodded.
Then I noticed the recipient's name.
It was not the attorney who had handled my father's estate.
It was another lawyer.
A woman named Catherine Brooks.
I searched the flash drive.
There was a folder labeled *BROOKS — PRIVATE*.
Inside were payment records.
Three transfers from Vanessa's personal account.
Each was for $15,000.
The descriptions read:
Consulting.
Estate review.
Confidential advisory.
Susan stared at the screen.
“Do you know this attorney?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
She picked up her phone.
“I'll verify her involvement before we draw conclusions.””
Meanwhile, investigators continued questioning Richard.
He eventually admitted that he'd used multiple names and companies to obtain financing.
But he denied being the person who organized the scheme.
Instead, he blamed Vanessa.
“She approached me,” he said.
“She wanted access to her husband's business assets.””
Vanessa exploded.
“You're lying!””
Richard remained calm.
“You told me Marcus had already agreed to transfer the company.””
“Because you said you had everything arranged!””
“And you provided the documents.””
Vanessa turned toward me.
“Marcus, don't believe him. He manipulated me.””
I looked at her.
“You used my identity.””
“I was trying to protect Brianna.””
“You tried to steal my company.””
“I wanted security!””
“You tried to take my daughter's inheritance.””
She began crying.
“I never wanted things to go this far.””
I stared at her.
“Then why did you keep going?””
She had no answer.
A few minutes later, Officer Bennett approached me.
“Mr. Williams, we've received confirmation that the fraudulent loan application was submitted using a device registered to your company's internal network.””
“Can you identify who used it?””
“We're still verifying that. However, the login credentials belong to Linda Parker.””
I looked toward Linda.
She immediately shook her head.
“I didn't submit the loan.””
Susan stepped in.
“Do you have evidence that the account was compromised?””
Linda nodded.
“Yes. I reported suspicious access last week.””
She opened her email.
There was a security alert showing that someone had logged into her account from an unfamiliar device.
The timestamp matched the creation of the loan application.
Then Linda opened another message.
It contained a photograph of a visitor badge.
The name printed on it was:
*Catherine Brooks — External Legal Consultant.*
I looked at Susan.
The woman who had received payments from Vanessa had also entered my company.
Susan's expression became serious.
“Marcus, I need to make a call.””
She walked into the hallway.
When she returned, she was pale.
“What happened?””
She lowered her voice.
“Catherine Brooks isn't simply a consultant. She's the attorney who drafted the original estate documents for your father.””
I stared.
“What?””
“She was also the person who certified the disputed trust amendment.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Can she do that?””
“Not without proper authorization. And if she knowingly certified forged documents, that's a serious matter.””
Before I could respond, Officer Bennett received a phone call.
He listened for several seconds.
Then he looked toward Vanessa.
“Mrs. Williams, we need to speak with you separately.””
Vanessa stood.
“Why?””
“Because we have located another bank account connected to this investigation.””
She looked confused.
Officer Bennett continued.
“The account was opened in your name eighteen months ago.””
Vanessa's face went white.
“What account?””
He showed her a statement.
The balance was $2.4 million.
I stared at the figure.
Two million four hundred thousand dollars.
Vanessa looked at Richard.
He slowly smiled.
Then he said something that made everyone turn toward him.
“That's not her money.””
May you like
He looked directly at me.
“It's yours, Marcus. And your father put it there before he died.””
