Chapter 9: The Enemy Who Knew Her Name

The call lasted less than ten seconds.

But those ten seconds changed everything.

Because whoever called didn’t sound like a stranger.

They sounded like someone who had studied Emily.

Someone who knew exactly where to hurt her.

The worst part wasn’t the threat.

It was the sentence.

You should have stayed a disappointment.

Those words weren’t random.

They were personal.

Emily sat in Dad’s office, staring at the phone.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, I asked:

“Emily, who would say something like that?””

She looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

But I knew my sister.

That answer meant something.

She had an idea.

Commander Hayes noticed too.

“Captain.””

She looked at him.

“Do you recognize the voice?””

A long pause.

Then Emily shook her head.

“No.””

Commander Hayes watched her carefully.

“But?””

Emily looked away.

“But the person knows things only someone close to the investigation would know.””

Dad stood.

“Then we go to the authorities.””

Emily looked at him.

“No.””

Everyone reacted.

“No?””

She shook her head.

“Not yet.””

Dad frowned.

“Why?””

“Because whoever this is has already accessed information they shouldn’t have.””

Commander Hayes nodded.

“She’s right.””

Dad looked frustrated.

“I’m trying to protect you.””

Emily’s expression softened.

“I know.””

She stepped closer.

“But protecting me doesn’t mean keeping me away from the truth.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because it was the opposite of what our family had done for years.

We thought hiding things was protection.

Emily knew better.

That afternoon, Commander Hayes arranged a private meeting at a secure location near the base.

For the first time, I saw Emily surrounded by people who respected her.

Not because of her title.

Because of who she was.

Officers shook her hand.

People called her “Captain.””

Not Emily.

Not the quiet daughter.

Not the family disappointment.

Captain Carter.

The difference was impossible to ignore.

During the meeting, Commander Hayes placed a file on the table.

“We found something.””

Emily opened it.

Inside were records from the original operation.

Her eyes moved quickly.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

Commander Hayes pointed.

“A communication log.””

Emily read silently.

Then her face changed.

“What?””

She handed it to me.

I didn’t understand the military terms.

But I understood one thing.

A message had been sent before the mission.

A message warning that the information was unreliable.

Someone knew.

Someone warned them.

But the warning was ignored.

“Who received this?”” Emily asked.

Commander Hayes answered:

“Your commanding officer at the time.””

Emily looked confused.

“He never showed me this.””

“No.””

The commander paused.

“Because he claimed he never received it.””

Emily leaned back.

“So someone intercepted it.””

“Yes.””

The room became quiet.

Then another officer entered.

“Commander.””

Hayes looked up.

“What is it?””

The officer handed him a tablet.

“I found the access record.””

Commander Hayes read it.

Then looked at Emily.

His expression was serious.

“Captain.””

“What?””

He slowly placed the tablet down.

“The person who accessed your mission files last night…”

Emily waited.

“…was not Adrian Vale.””

Nobody moved.

“Who was it?””

Commander Hayes looked at the record.

Then said:

“Someone with family access privileges.””

Emily’s face went pale.

“Family access?””

The commander nodded.

“Yes.””

Dad stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

Commander Hayes looked between them.

“It means someone in the Carter family had permission to see classified information.””

Emily stared.

“Impossible.””

But the commander didn’t look away.

“Captain…”

He turned the tablet around.

A name appeared on the screen.

And when Emily saw it, she stopped breathing.

Because it wasn’t Ryan.

It wasn’t Charlotte.

It wasn’t their mother.

May you like

It was the one person she never expected.

Her own father.
