Chapter 13: The Letter From My Mother

Emily read the letter twice.

The first time, she looked confused.

The second time, she looked hurt.

Not angry.

Not shocked.

Just hurt.

Because somehow, after everything we had discovered, the person who had caused her the deepest pain wasn’t a stranger.

It was her own family.

My mother.

Emily lowered the paper.

“Mom knew.””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew she was right.

Dad looked away.

Commander Hayes remained silent.

Even Adrian Vale looked uncomfortable.

Emily turned toward him.

“How long have you had this?””

Adrian sighed.

“Three years.””

Her eyes hardened.

“And you kept it?””

“I was trying to find the right time.””

Emily laughed quietly.

“The right time?””

Her voice cracked.

“Do you know how many nights I spent wondering why my own family didn’t care?””

Adrian didn’t respond.

Emily looked back at the letter.

“What did she hide?””

She read the first lines again.

Then handed it to me.

I read it carefully.

Emily,

If you are reading this, it means your father failed to protect you from the truth I tried to hide.

I know you will be angry.

You have every right to be.

But I need you to understand something.

You were never a disappointment.

Not once.

My hands tightened around the paper.

Those words were everything Emily had wanted to hear for years.

But they came too late.

The letter continued.

Your father and I knew someone was targeting your unit.

We knew there were problems with the operation.

But we did not know how deep it went.

Your father wanted to warn you.

I told him not to.

Because I believed the moment you knew, you would put yourself in even more danger trying to uncover the truth.

Emily closed her eyes.

“She tried to protect me.””

Dad nodded.

“Yes.””

Emily looked at him.

“But she also let me believe nobody cared.””

Dad looked devastated.

“Yes.””

That simple answer was the only one he could give.

Adrian stepped forward.

“There’s more.””

Emily looked at him.

“What?””

He pointed at the final pages.

Your father discovered evidence that someone close to your command structure was involved.

He tried to investigate quietly.

But someone found out.

That was when the threats began.

Emily looked at Dad.

“You were threatened?””

Dad nodded.

“They told me if I continued searching, they would come after you.””

She stared.

“And you stopped?””

Dad’s eyes filled.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

Emily looked away.

For years, she had wanted her father to fight for her.

And he had.

Just silently.

Just too late.

Commander Hayes looked at Adrian.

“Why reveal this now?””

Adrian looked serious.

“Because the people who buried this case are moving again.””

Emily immediately understood.

“Why?””

“Because someone reopened the investigation.””

Commander Hayes looked at her.

“You.””

The room became quiet.

Emily looked at the files.

The threats.

The secrets.

The years stolen from her.

Then she folded the letter carefully.

“I’m finishing this.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Emily.””

She looked at him.

“I’m not doing this because I’m angry.””

Her voice was calm.

“I’m doing it because my team deserves the truth.””

Commander Hayes nodded.

“That’s why you were the right person to lead them.””

For the first time that night, Emily smiled.

Not because someone praised her.

Because someone finally understood her.

The investigation moved quickly after that.

Commander Hayes contacted military authorities.

Adrian provided evidence.

Dad turned over every document he had hidden.

And my family finally sat together without pretending.

But there was one person missing.

My mother.

When we returned home, she was waiting.

Alone.

The moment she saw Emily, she started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

Emily stopped.

Mom wiped her tears.

“I know sorry doesn’t fix anything.””

“No.””

Emily’s answer was gentle.

“But it’s a start.””

Mom looked at her daughter.

“I was wrong about you.””

Emily nodded.

“I know.””

Mom looked surprised.

Emily continued.

“But I don’t want you to be proud of Captain Carter.””

She took a breath.

“I want you to be proud of Emily.””

My mother broke down.

And for the first time in years, she hugged her daughter without comparing her to anyone else.

But later that night, Commander Hayes called.

Emily answered.

“Captain Carter.””

“Yes, sir?””

His voice was serious.

“We found the person who authorized the false mission update.””

Emily stood still.

“Who?””

A long pause.

Then:

“The name has been confirmed.””

Emily gripped the phone.

“Tell me.””

Commander Hayes lowered his voice.

“It wasn’t your commanding officer.””

Emily frowned.

“Then who?””

The answer changed everything.

Because the person responsible wasn’t someone from her military life.

May you like

It was someone from before.

Someone who had known her since childhood.
