Chapter 4: The Mission Nobody Knew About

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

The ocean waves crashed behind us, but they sounded distant.

All I could hear was Emily breathing.

My father’s words had opened a door that had been locked for years.

“The mission that almost brought her home in a box.””

Emily stared at him.

“Dad… what are you talking about?””

My father looked down.

For the first time in my entire life, I saw something I never thought I would see on his face.

Fear.

Not anger.

Not disappointment.

Fear.

Commander Hayes stepped forward.

“Mr. Carter, this conversation is Captain Carter’s choice.””

Dad nodded.

“I know.””

Emily crossed her arms.

“No. I want to hear this.””

Her voice was quiet.

But everyone knew she meant it.

Dad swallowed.

“Three years ago, I received a call.””

Emily’s expression changed.

“What kind of call?””

“The kind every parent in the military dreads.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Dad looked at Emily.

“They told me there had been an incident during your deployment.””

Emily looked at Commander Hayes.

He remained silent.

That silence told me everything.

“You knew?”” Emily asked him.

Commander Hayes nodded slowly.

“I knew about the operation.””

“But not that my father knew?””

“No.””

Emily looked back at Dad.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Dad looked away.

“Because they asked me not to interfere.””

Emily laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“So instead, you just pretended I was a disappointment?””

Dad closed his eyes.

“I thought pushing you away would make it easier.””

“For who?””

The question hit harder than anything else.

Dad had no answer.

Emily stepped closer.

“You made me believe you were ashamed of me.””

“I was ashamed of myself,” Dad whispered.

That stopped her.

Dad continued.

“I spent my whole life believing success meant money. Titles. Houses. Things people could see.””

He looked toward the restaurant window where Ryan and Charlotte were watching.

“I taught your brother and sister to chase things everyone would notice.””

Then his eyes returned to Emily.

“But you chose something nobody could see.””

Emily’s face softened slightly.

Dad continued.

“You left home every day knowing you might not come back.””

The wind moved between us.

“And I sat here complaining that you didn’t call enough.””

Emily looked down.

“I didn’t need you to understand the mission.””

Her voice became quieter.

“I needed you to understand me.””

Dad looked like those words hurt more than any accusation.

“I know.””

“No,” Emily said.

“You don’t.””

She wiped her eyes quickly.

“You know what happened to my career. You know my rank. You know my awards.””

She looked directly at him.

“But you never knew how many nights I sat alone wondering if my own family was embarrassed of me.””

Dad couldn’t respond.

Commander Hayes looked at Emily.

“Captain, there’s something else you should know.””

Emily turned.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Your actions during that mission saved the lives of your entire team.””

Emily looked uncomfortable.

“I was just doing my job.””

Commander Hayes shook his head.

“No. You were doing more than that.””

Dad looked at her.

“What happened?””

Emily didn’t answer.

She looked at Commander Hayes.

After a moment, he nodded.

“You can tell them if you want.””

Emily stood there silently.

Then she finally spoke.

“We were supposed to extract before sunrise.””

Her voice became distant.

“Something went wrong.””

I watched her face.

For the first time, I saw the memory behind her eyes.

“Communication failed. Our route was compromised.””

Dad listened carefully.

“The team had to move quickly.””

Emily paused.

“I was the last person out.””

Dad’s face changed.

“Why?””

“Because someone had to stay.””

Nobody spoke.

Emily looked at the ground.

“I made sure everyone else got out first.””

Commander Hayes nodded.

“That decision is why she received the commendation.””

Dad whispered:

“You almost died.””

Emily didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

The word hung in the air.

Then Dad did something unexpected.

He stepped forward.

And hugged her.

Not a quick hug.

Not a polite family gesture.

A desperate one.

Emily froze.

Like she didn’t know what to do.

Then slowly, she hugged him back.

I looked away.

It felt like I was witnessing something private.

Something years overdue.

But inside the restaurant, someone else was watching.

Ryan.

And from the look on his face, he wasn’t emotional.

He was angry.

When Dad and Emily finally separated, Ryan walked outside.

He looked at Commander Hayes.

Then at Emily.

“So that’s it?””

Emily frowned.

“What?””

Ryan laughed.

“Everyone suddenly acts like you’re some hero?””

Nobody answered.

Ryan shook his head.

“I spent my whole life building something real.””

Emily stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Ryan looked toward the restaurant.

“It means you disappeared and now everyone is acting like disappearing was some achievement.””

Commander Hayes’ expression hardened.

“Be careful with your words.””

Ryan ignored him.

“I just want to know one thing.””

He looked at Emily.

“Did you ever actually want this family?””

Emily went completely still.

And before she could answer, my mother stepped outside behind him.

She had heard everything.

But she wasn’t looking at Emily.

She was looking at the letter in Emily’s hand.

Then she whispered:

“Where did you get that?””

Emily looked at her.

“Dad gave it to me.””

My mother’s face turned pale.

May you like

Because she knew exactly what was inside.

And suddenly, she looked more afraid than anyone.
