Chapter 7: The Warning in the Dark

The message on my father’s phone stayed on the screen for several seconds.

Nobody breathed.

Nobody spoke.

It was just one sentence.

A threat.

A warning.

A reminder that someone out there was still watching.

My father quickly locked the screen.

Too quickly.

Emily noticed.

“Dad.””

He looked at her.

“What?””

“Show me the message again.””

Dad hesitated.

“Emily—”

“Show me.””

Her voice wasn’t loud.

It didn’t need to be.

Everyone knew that tone.

The tone of someone who had spent years making decisions under pressure.

Dad slowly unlocked his phone.

Emily read the message.

Her expression didn’t change.

That worried me.

Because I knew Emily.

When she was angry, she wasn’t emotional.

She became focused.

“Who else received this?”” she asked.

Dad shook his head.

“Nobody.””

Emily looked at Commander Hayes.

“Can you trace it?””

He shook his head.

“Not from here.””

Ryan looked confused.

“So someone is threatening us because of a military mission?””

Commander Hayes looked at him.

“Yes.””

Ryan’s face lost some of its confidence.

For the first time that night, he understood this wasn’t just a family argument.

This was bigger.

Charlotte stepped closer.

“Emily, what happened on that mission?””

Emily looked at her.

“I can’t tell you everything.””

Charlotte sighed.

“Of course.””

Emily looked at her.

“But I can tell you this.””

The entire group went quiet.

“My team was sent somewhere we weren’t supposed to be.””

Dad listened carefully.

“The information we received was wrong.””

Commander Hayes nodded.

“Captain Carter discovered inconsistencies during the operation.””

Emily continued.

“We were told there would be no resistance.””

She paused.

“There was.””

A chill moved through me.

“How did you get out?””

Emily looked away.

“I made a choice.””

Nobody liked that answer.

Because we all knew what it meant.

Commander Hayes stepped forward.

“Captain Carter made a decision that saved three lives.””

Ryan looked at him.

“And almost cost hers?””

The commander didn’t respond.

Because it was true.

Emily looked at the ground.

“I was prepared for the possibility.””

Dad’s eyes filled.

“No parent should hear their child say that.””

Emily looked at him.

“Then you should have listened when I tried to tell you who I was.””

That hurt.

But it was true.

Dad nodded slowly.

“I know.””

A few minutes later, we returned inside.

But the dinner was over.

The celebration was gone.

Everyone sat silently while the restaurant staff cleared the plates.

For years, my family had judged Emily because she wouldn’t explain her life.

Now we were learning the reason.

She couldn’t.

Not because she didn’t trust us.

Because she was protecting things bigger than herself.

When we finally left, I walked beside Emily toward the parking lot.

“You okay?””

She smiled faintly.

“You always ask me that.””

“Because nobody else does.””

She looked at me.

For a second, she looked like my little sister again.

The girl who used to steal my headphones.

The girl who cried when our dog died.

The girl everyone somehow forgot was still human.

“I’m okay,” she said.

I knew she was lying.

Before I could answer, a black SUV slowly passed the parking lot entrance.

Emily stopped.

Her entire body changed.

“What?””

She stared at the vehicle.

“Emily?””

She didn’t respond.

The SUV continued driving.

Then disappeared.

But she was still watching.

“Do you know that car?”” I asked.

Her voice became quiet.

“Yes.””

“How?””

She looked at me.

“Because it followed me three times before.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Emily looked toward the road.

“Because I thought it was connected to the investigation.””

“And now?””

She didn’t answer.

Because she already knew.

Now it was personal.

Then Commander Hayes rushed outside.

“Captain.””

Emily turned.

“What happened?””

He held a phone in his hand.

His face was serious.

“We just received confirmation from Naval Intelligence.””

Emily went still.

“About Adrian Vale?””

Commander Hayes nodded.

“No.””

He looked at her.

“About your father.””

Emily frowned.

“My father?””

Commander Hayes swallowed.

“The person who leaked information about your mission…”

He paused.

“…may not have been Adrian Vale.””

Emily stared.

“Then who was it?””

Commander Hayes looked toward the restaurant.

Toward our family.

May you like

And whispered:

“Someone much closer.””
