Chapter 12: The Name On The Document

Emily didn’t open the folder immediately.

She just stared at it.

Like she already knew whatever was inside would change her life.

Adrian Vale stood several feet away.

No weapon.

No anger.

Just a man carrying years of secrets.

Commander Hayes remained cautious.

“Captain, don’t assume anything.””

Emily nodded.

“I won’t.””

She opened the folder.

The first page contained a classified report.

Her eyes moved across the words.

Then stopped.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Emily didn’t answer.

She handed the page to Commander Hayes.

His expression changed instantly.

“What?””

He read it again.

Then again.

“What does it say?”” Dad asked.

Commander Hayes looked at him.

“The mission alteration request was approved by…”

He stopped.

Emily whispered:

“Me.””

Nobody understood.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

She grabbed the paper.

“That’s impossible.””

Adrian spoke quietly.

“That’s what I thought too.””

Emily looked at him.

“Explain.””

Adrian sighed.

“Someone used your credentials.””

Commander Hayes nodded.

“Someone made it look like you requested the changes yourself.””

Emily looked sick.

“So my own authorization was used to destroy my team.””

“Yes.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Who had access?””

Adrian looked at him.

“You know the answer.””

Everyone became still.

Emily looked between them.

“Who?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

He looked at Dad.

Dad’s face changed.

“No.””

Emily turned.

“Dad?””

Dad looked terrified.

“I thought…”

“What?””

He looked at the document.

“I thought those files were destroyed.””

The words shocked everyone.

Emily stared.

“You knew?””

Dad shook his head.

“Not this.””

“Then what?””

Dad looked at Adrian.

“What are you talking about?””

Adrian walked closer.

“Your father knew someone was trying to use your identity.””

Emily’s face fell.

“Dad?””

Dad looked broken.

“I suspected.””

Her voice became quiet.

“How long?””

Dad didn’t answer.

“How long did you know someone was targeting me?””

Dad finally whispered:

“Before your mission.””

The silence was unbearable.

Emily stepped back.

Three years of unanswered questions.

Three years of believing nobody cared.

And now she was learning someone did know.

Someone just failed to save her.

“Why?””

Dad’s eyes filled.

“Because I thought I could fix it.””

Emily shook her head.

“You thought you could fix someone trying to kill me?””

“I didn’t know how serious it was.””

“You never know how serious anything is until someone gets hurt.””

Dad had no response.

Adrian looked at Emily.

“There’s more.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

“The person who accessed your identity didn’t do it alone.””

Commander Hayes immediately focused.

“Who helped them?””

Adrian reached into the folder.

He pulled out another document.

“This.””

Emily took it.

Her eyes moved.

Then widened.

Because the second name was impossible.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She slowly lowered the paper.

“My commanding officer.””

Commander Hayes went silent.

“That can’t be.””

Adrian nodded.

“That’s why nobody found the truth.””

Emily looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because the person investigating the mission was the same person who helped hide the evidence.””

Everything suddenly made sense.

The missing files.

The altered records.

The unanswered questions.

Emily hadn’t just been fighting one enemy.

She had been fighting a system built to hide the truth.

Then Adrian looked at her.

“But there’s one thing you still don’t know.””

Emily stared.

“What?””

He handed her one final document.

A personal letter.

Not military.

Not classified.

Just handwritten.

She opened it.

And after reading the first line, her entire expression changed.

Because the handwriting was familiar.

Very familiar.

It wasn’t from Adrian.

It wasn’t from her commanding officer.

It wasn’t from a stranger.

It was from someone Emily had spent years believing had abandoned her.

Her mother.

And the first sentence said:

*“Emily, if you are reading this, it means your father failed to protect you from the truth I tried to hide.””*
