Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Uniform
The silence after Commander Hayes spoke felt heavier than any argument we had ever had.
My father slowly lowered himself back into his chair.
The confidence he had carried all evening was gone.
“Captain?”” Ryan repeated.
He looked at Emily.
“You’re a captain?””
Emily didn’t answer immediately.
Commander Hayes looked around the table.
“I assumed her family would know.””
Mom swallowed.
“Know what?””
The commander glanced at Emily.
She gave him a small nod.
That was the first time I realized something.
Emily wasn’t embarrassed.
She was protecting them.
Even after everything they had said.
Commander Hayes pulled out a chair.
“May I?””
Emily nodded.
He sat beside her.
“I’m Commander Nathan Hayes. I have served with Captain Emily Carter for nearly six years.””
Ryan stared.
“Served with her?””
Commander Hayes smiled slightly.
“Yes.””
Dad looked confused.
“But she never told us she was an officer.””
Emily looked down.
“I tried.””
Mom immediately shook her head.
“No, you didn’t.””
Emily looked at her.
“Yes, Mom. I did.””
The table became quiet again.
Emily took a breath.
“I called after my promotion ceremony.””
I remembered that day.
I remembered Emily sitting on my apartment couch afterward.
She had been holding her phone.
Waiting.
“What did they say?”” I asked her back then.
She had only smiled sadly.
Now, I finally heard the answer.
“You told me you couldn’t come because Ryan had a work dinner,” Emily said.
Ryan looked away.
“I don’t remember that.””
Emily nodded.
“I know.””
Her voice was calm.
That somehow made it worse.
“I called again when I received my next assignment.””
Mom looked uncomfortable.
“We were busy.””
Emily smiled faintly.
“Exactly.””
Nobody spoke.
Commander Hayes placed his hands on the table.
“Captain Carter has led operations that most people never hear about.””
Ryan laughed nervously.
“Operations?””
Emily glanced at him.
“Yes.””
“What kind?””
The commander looked at Emily.
She shook her head.
“Not something I can discuss.””
That answer seemed to frustrate my family more than anything.
Dad leaned forward.
“So you expect us to just believe this?””
I looked at him.
“Dad, Commander Hayes literally just saluted her.””
Dad ignored me.
“I’m saying we don’t know what she actually does.””
Commander Hayes looked directly at him.
“Mr. Carter, with respect, you don’t need to know every detail to be proud of your daughter.””
The words landed harder than any insult.
Emily looked away.
I noticed something then.
A small scar near her wrist.
A scar I had never seen before.
I wondered how many things she had hidden.
How many injuries.
How many impossible moments.
How many times she had stood alone while we celebrated everyone else.
Charlotte finally spoke.
“So why didn’t you tell us?””
Emily looked at her.
“Because every time I tried, nobody listened.””
Charlotte opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
Because she knew it was true.
The dinner continued, but everything had changed.
The people who spent years judging Emily suddenly wanted answers.
Ryan asked about her career.
Mom asked about her travels.
Dad asked about her accomplishments.
But Emily didn’t seem interested in proving anything.
She just ate quietly.
Like she had already accepted that they might never understand.
After dinner, I found her outside near the restaurant entrance.
The ocean wind moved through her hair.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”” I asked.
She looked at the waves.
“Because you were the only one who never made me feel like I had to.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Emily…”
She smiled.
“You always believed me.””
I wanted to ask everything.
Where she had been.
What she had done.
What she had survived.
But before I could, Commander Hayes stepped outside.
His expression had changed.
Serious.
“Captain Carter.””
Emily turned.
“Yes, sir?””
He held a folder in his hand.
“I just received confirmation.””
Her smile disappeared.
“Confirmation of what?””
Commander Hayes looked at me.
Then back at Emily.
“Your classified commendation has been approved.””
Emily went still.
“What?””
He lowered his voice.
“And there’s something else.””
The wind seemed to stop.
“What is it?”” Emily asked.
Commander Hayes opened the folder.
“The person who nominated you wasn’t from your unit.””
Emily frowned.
“Then who was it?””
May you like
Commander Hayes looked at the paper.
Then said a name that made Emily’s face lose all color.
