Chapter 10: The File With My Father’s Name
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The name on the screen sat there like a wound reopening.
*Access Granted: Jonathan Carter.*
My father.
The man who spent years telling Emily she needed to build a real life.
The man who secretly wrote a letter praising her.
The man who claimed he had been searching for the truth.
The same man whose name appeared on a classified access record.
Emily slowly looked at Dad.
“Explain.””
Dad didn’t answer.
That scared me more than anything.
Because my father always had an answer.
He could argue in court for hours.
He could convince anyone of anything.
But now he looked completely lost.
“Dad,” Emily said again.
He sat down.
“I don’t understand.””
Commander Hayes remained calm.
“Mr. Carter, this record indicates your credentials were used to access military documents.””
“My credentials?””
“Yes.””
Dad shook his head.
“I never accessed those files.””
Emily stared at him.
“Then how did someone use your name?””
Dad looked at the screen.
And then his face changed.
A memory.
A realization.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?”” I asked.
Dad stood quickly.
“There was someone.””
Emily stepped closer.
“Who?””
Dad looked uncomfortable.
“Years ago, when I worked with military contractors, I helped create a legal security system.””
Commander Hayes narrowed his eyes.
“You helped design access protocols?””
“Yes.””
“And who worked with you?””
Dad hesitated.
That hesitation answered the question before he spoke.
“Adrian Vale.””
The room became silent.
Emily looked away.
“Of course.””
Dad immediately looked at her.
“No.””
“Dad, every road keeps leading back to him.””
“I know.””
“Then why does it keep feeling like you’re protecting him?””
Dad flinched.
Because that question hurt.
But it was the right question.
“I’m not protecting him.””
“Then what are you doing?””
Dad looked at her.
“Trying to understand how someone I trusted became someone who destroyed your life.””
Emily looked down.
For a moment, she wasn’t a captain.
She wasn’t a soldier.
She was just a daughter.
A daughter realizing her father had been carrying a secret for years.
Commander Hayes looked at the file again.
“There’s something else.””
Emily turned.
“What?””
“The access happened two weeks before your mission.””
Her face changed.
“Two weeks?””
“Yes.””
Dad looked confused.
“But why?””
Commander Hayes continued.
“Someone wasn’t trying to learn about the mission.””
He pointed to the records.
“They were trying to change something.””
Emily leaned closer.
“What was changed?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Then the commander opened another document.
A revised operation plan.
Emily read it.
Her expression slowly hardened.
“This isn’t the plan I approved.””
Dad looked at her.
“What?””
Emily pointed.
“Three team members were added.””
Commander Hayes nodded.
“And the extraction route was changed.””
Emily’s hands tightened.
“That’s why we were trapped.””
The room went quiet.
All those years.
All those questions.
The reason she almost died wasn’t because of bad luck.
Someone changed the plan.
Someone moved pieces around.
Someone treated human lives like numbers on a page.
Then Ryan spoke.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
“You said family access.””
Commander Hayes nodded.
Ryan swallowed.
“So someone in our family helped them?””
Dad looked at him.
“No.””
But his voice lacked confidence.
Ryan looked at Emily.
“Could it have been me?””
Emily frowned.
“What?””
Ryan looked embarrassed.
“Years ago, Dad asked me to help organize some documents.””
Dad looked at him.
“When?””
“I don’t remember.””
That wasn’t helpful.
Ryan rubbed his forehead.
“I was young. I didn’t know what they were.””
Emily looked at him carefully.
“Ryan.””
He looked up.
“Did you ever share Dad’s computer password?””
Ryan went pale.
The silence answered.
Emily’s expression changed.
“Ryan.””
“I didn’t know.””
Nobody spoke.
Ryan’s voice became desperate.
“I swear. I didn’t know what I was giving anyone.””
Commander Hayes stepped forward.
“Who did you share it with?””
Ryan looked away.
“Someone I thought was helping Dad.””
“Who?””
Ryan closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“Adrian Vale.””
The name returned.
Again.
And again.
But this time, there was something different.
Because suddenly Adrian Vale wasn’t just a suspect.
He was someone who had been inside their lives.
Someone they trusted.
Commander Hayes looked at Emily.
“Captain, we need to move quickly.””
“Why?””
The commander looked at the access record.
“Because whoever accessed those files knows we found this.””
Emily frowned.
“How do you know?””
Commander Hayes pointed at the timestamp.
The file had been opened again.
Minutes ago.
While they were standing there.
Someone was watching.
Then Dad’s phone buzzed.
Another message.
Everyone froze.
Dad picked it up.
His face turned white.
“What does it say?”” Mom asked.
Dad slowly turned the screen around.
A picture appeared.
A picture of Emily.
Taken outside the restaurant.
Taken tonight.
May you like
Underneath it were four words.
*“You should have listened.””*
