Chapter 9: The Person Emily Trusted Most

The storage unit was located in an industrial complex outside Atlanta.

Detective Mitchell obtained a warrant, and a team of officers arrived before sunrise.

I wasn't allowed inside during the initial search.

Daniel and I waited in the parking lot while rain tapped against the windshield.

I kept thinking about Emily.

She had discovered everything.

The stolen money.

The forged documents.

The altered medical records.

And she had tried to protect us without frightening me.

I had spent three years believing I understood what happened to my wife.

Now I was beginning to realize how little I knew.

Daniel broke the silence.

"Michael, there's something we need to consider.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"If Emily sent copies of the evidence to someone, we need to identify that person before James does.""

I nodded.

"Dr. Reed said James never suspected them.""

"Exactly.""

I thought about the people Emily trusted.

Her sister lived in Oregon.

Her parents had passed away years earlier.

She had several close friends, but none had been involved in our business.

Then I remembered someone.

"Patricia.""

Daniel shook his head.

"She said Emily gave her the medical records. She may have been involved, but we don't know whether she received the financial evidence.""

I stared through the windshield.

"Emily had a best friend from college. Rachel Morgan.""

"Where is she now?""

"She lives in Atlanta. She attended Emily's funeral.""

Daniel wrote the name down.

"Do you have her number?""

I searched my contacts.

I hadn't spoken to Rachel in almost two years.

She had called after Emily died several times, but I had stopped answering most social calls while trying to rebuild my life.

I dialed.

She answered after four rings.

"Hello?""

"Rachel, it's Michael Bennett.""

Silence.

Then a quiet gasp.

"Michael?""

"I need to ask you something about Emily.""

Her breathing changed.

"What happened?""

"Did she ever give you anything to keep safe?""

Another silence.

Then she whispered, "Oh, Michael.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

"She told me this day might come.""

I sat upright.

"Where are you?""

"At home.""

"Can I come over?""

"Yes. But Michael, please don't come alone.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Why?""

Rachel lowered her voice.

"Because someone has been watching my house.""

The call ended.

I immediately contacted Detective Mitchell.

She dispatched two officers to Rachel's address and arranged an escort.

Forty minutes later, we arrived.

Rachel opened the door before we knocked.

She was in her late thirties, wearing jeans and a gray sweater. Her eyes were red, and she looked as though she hadn't slept.

"Come inside.""

Her living room was filled with books, photographs, and boxes.

On a shelf stood a framed picture of Emily and Rachel laughing together at a beach.

I hadn't seen that photograph in years.

Rachel followed my gaze.

"She was happy that day.""

I nodded.

"She was.""

Rachel led us into the kitchen and placed a small metal case on the table.

"Emily gave me this six months before she died.""

I stared at it.

"What's inside?""

"Copies of everything she found. Bank records, property contracts, emails, and something else.""

She opened the case.

Inside were two USB drives, a sealed envelope, and a small digital recorder.

I reached for the envelope.

My name was written across it.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

Emily.

Rachel watched me carefully.

"She told me not to give it to you unless James tried to take control of Lily's inheritance.""

I looked up.

"Why?""

"Because she believed that would mean James had discovered the original documents were still out there.""

My hands trembled as I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

Michael, if Rachel has given you this letter, then James has made his move.

I read on.

I know you trust him. I know how much he means to you. But the man you call your brother has been planning to take control of our family for longer than you realize.

My throat tightened.

I found the second account. I found the properties. I found the payments connected to my medical treatment.

Then came a sentence that made me stop breathing.

But the most important evidence concerns Lily.

I looked at Rachel.

"What does she mean?""

Rachel's eyes filled with tears.

"Emily discovered that James had been trying to gain access to Lily's trust before she died.""

I looked back at the letter.

He knew that if anything happened to me, Lily would eventually inherit a substantial amount of money. He wanted control of that money before she became old enough to understand what was happening.

I felt my hands shaking.

The letter continued.

I made a mistake, Michael. I trusted someone who had access to our family long before James entered our business.

I looked up.

"Who?""

Rachel lowered her eyes.

The final paragraph was written in darker ink.

There is one person James has never suspected. Someone who knows where the original trust documents are hidden and who can prove that the guardianship application was prepared before you ever met Vanessa.

I stared at the page.

"Who is it?""

Rachel didn't answer.

Instead, she picked up the digital recorder and pressed play.

Emily's voice filled the kitchen.

"Rachel, if Michael is listening to this, please tell him I'm sorry I didn't explain everything sooner.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

Emily continued.

"There's something about Lily's birth that I never told Michael. Something I discovered while reviewing the original inheritance documents.""

I felt the room grow cold.

"What is she talking about?"" I whispered.

Rachel's face crumpled.

The recording continued.

"Michael, James isn't Lily's legal godfather by accident. He insisted on being included in the original trust arrangements because he knew something about her biological inheritance that I didn't discover until years later.""

I looked at Rachel.

"Emily, what are you saying?""

The recording crackled.

Then Emily spoke the words that changed everything.

"James is not just interested in stealing Lily's inheritance. He believes Lily has a legal claim to something worth far more than the $3.2 million trust.""

The recording stopped.

Rachel pressed the button again.

Nothing.

I stared at the device.

"Where's the rest?""

Rachel reached into the metal case and pulled out a second envelope.

"Emily said you should only open this after hearing the recording.""

I tore it open.

Inside was a copy of a birth certificate.

I looked at the name printed beneath the section marked Father.

It wasn't mine.

And beside the document was a handwritten note from Emily.

Michael, there's something I should have told you before we got married.

I looked at Rachel.

She was crying now.

May you like

Then she whispered:

"James has known the truth about Lily's biological father since the day she was born.""
