Chapter 12: The Trap at the Bennett Estate
By sunset, Detective Mitchell had arranged a controlled operation.
James still believed I might come to the old Bennett estate.
He had sent another message demanding the original birth certificate.
The police wanted to use that meeting to identify everyone involved in the scheme.
I agreed to cooperate.
But I had one condition.
"Nobody goes near my daughter.""
Detective Mitchell nodded.
"Your daughter will remain protected. You'll have officers with you throughout the operation.""
Daniel handed me a folder.
"These are copies of the documents. The originals remain secured.""
I looked through them.
Emily's letter.
The forged property transfer.
The guardianship application.
The original birth certificate.
And the financial records showing more than $2.1 million in suspicious transfers.
Everything James had spent years hiding was finally coming together.
But I still needed answers about Emily.
And I needed to hear the truth from my brother.
At 7:30 p.m., we arrived at the Bennett estate.
It was an old property on the outskirts of Atlanta, surrounded by tall trees and a stone wall.
Our grandfather had built it decades earlier.
I remembered playing there as a child.
James and I used to race bicycles along the driveway.
Our grandfather would sit on the porch and tell us that family was the only thing money couldn't buy.
I almost laughed at the memory.
James had apparently forgotten every word.
A black SUV was parked near the entrance.
Detective Mitchell's team positioned themselves nearby.
I entered the house carrying a folder.
James was waiting in the living room.
He wore a dark sweater and held a glass of whiskey.
When he saw me, he smiled.
"Little brother.""
I didn't sit down.
"Where's Vanessa?""
He took a sip.
"She's not here.""
"Where is she?""
"Safe.""
I placed the folder on the table.
"Unlike my daughter?""
His smile disappeared.
"Don't make this emotional.""
I stared at him.
"You sent someone to photograph Lily in the hospital.""
He shrugged.
"I wanted to know she was okay.""
"You've got a strange way of showing concern.""
James put down his glass.
"Michael, we need to talk about the future.""
I opened the folder.
"Then let's talk about the past.""
I placed the birth certificate in front of him.
His eyes dropped to the document.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he sighed.
"So Emily finally told you.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"You knew?""
"Of course I knew.""
"How long?""
"Since the beginning.""
I stepped closer.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
He looked at me as though I had asked a ridiculous question.
"Because you were happy.""
"That's your excuse?""
James shook his head.
"Emily and I made mistakes. She wanted a stable family, and I wanted to focus on building the business. Then you came along.""
I stared at him.
"You let me raise your daughter without telling me she was yours.""
James took another sip.
"You raised her well. I never denied that.""
"You used her.""
"I protected her inheritance.""
I slammed my hand against the table.
"You tried to take her away from me!""
James's expression hardened.
"Because you were never supposed to have control of the estate.""
I stared at him.
"What does that mean?""
He walked toward the fireplace.
"Our grandfather established the family trust long before you were old enough to understand it. I was always supposed to manage the estate. But Emily's legal arrangements complicated everything.""
"Because Lily was a beneficiary.""
"Because Lily was my daughter.""
I shook my head.
"She was a little girl who needed a father. Not a bank account you could access.""
James turned.
"You don't understand what I've sacrificed.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Two million dollars?""
His face tightened.
"That money was mine.""
"No. It belonged to the company.""
"I built half that business!""
"Then why did you need to steal from it?""
He stepped closer.
"Because you got everything, Michael. You got the company. You got the house.
You got Emily. You got the daughter I never had the courage to claim.""
I stared at him.
"Emily didn't belong to either of us.""
James's expression changed.
For a moment, I saw something ugly in his eyes.
"She chose you.""
"And you never forgave her.""
He said nothing.
I opened another document.
"Did you arrange the medication changes before her surgery?""
James looked at the page.
Then he laughed.
"You've been listening to Vanessa?""
"No. I've been listening to the evidence.""
"Vanessa is a liar.""
"Maybe. But Dr. Reed has already given a statement.""
His face went pale.
I continued.
"And Patricia has the original hospital records.""
James placed his glass down.
"Where is she?""
"That's not your concern.""
He walked toward the table and picked up the birth certificate.
"Give me this.""
"No.""
"Michael, you have no idea what you're holding.""
"I know exactly what I'm holding. It's a document proving that you are Lily's biological father.""
He looked at me.
"Then you understand why she belongs with me.""
I felt my blood boil.
"She belongs with herself. She's not property.""
James smiled coldly.
"You always were sentimental.""
Then he opened a drawer and removed a thick envelope.
Inside were photographs of Lily, copies of her medical records, and documents bearing my signature.
"Do you know what happens if these documents become public?"" he asked.
I didn't answer.
"People will question your ability to raise her. They'll question why you hid her biological father. They'll question whether you've been manipulating her inheritance.""
I looked at the documents.
"You forged these too.""
James shrugged.
"People believe what they see.""
I stepped toward him.
"Not anymore.""
His smile disappeared.
Then he said something that made my heart stop.
"Emily said exactly the same thing before she died.""
I stared at him.
"What did you just say?""
James looked away.
For a moment, the room was completely silent.
Then I heard a noise behind the hallway door.
A woman's voice.
"James, we need to leave.""
Vanessa stepped into the room.
She was holding a small black suitcase.
James turned toward her.
"What are you doing here?""
She looked at me.
"Michael, please. You need to listen.""
I stared at the suitcase.
"Where are you going?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Somewhere safe.""
James grabbed her arm.
"Not now.""
She pulled away.
"Don't touch me!""
I looked between them.
"What happened?""
Vanessa opened the suitcase.
Inside were several passports, bundles of cash, and a folder of financial documents.
Then she looked at me and whispered:
"James was never planning to share the money with me.""
James's expression turned murderous.
"Vanessa. Put that suitcase down.""
She stepped backward.
"No. I'm done protecting you.""
Then she looked directly at me.
"Michael, I have proof of what happened to Emily.""
She reached into the suitcase and pulled out a small digital recorder.
"But if I give you this, James will make sure none of us ever leave this house.""
May you like
Behind me, Detective Mitchell's radio suddenly crackled.
And James reached inside his jacket.
