Chapter 10: The Name on Lily's Birth Certificate

I read the name on the birth certificate three times.

Then I read it again.

*Father: James Bennett.*

My older brother.

The man who had stood beside me at my wedding rehearsal.

The man who had helped carry Emily's coffin.

The man who had promised to protect my daughter.

I pushed the document away.

"No.""

Rachel reached for my arm.

"Michael, please.""

"Tell me this is fake.""

She shook her head.

I stood up so abruptly that my chair fell backward.

"Tell me somebody forged this!""

Daniel picked up the document carefully.

"Michael, we need to verify this before drawing conclusions.""

I turned toward Rachel.

"Did Emily know?""

Rachel nodded through her tears.

"She discovered it when Lily was almost two.""

I couldn't process the words.

"How?""

"She was organizing Lily's original birth records. She found an older document among the hospital papers. It wasn't the certificate you received after the adoption and registration process. It was the original record.""

I stared at her.

"Adoption?""

Rachel nodded.

"Emily told me she and James had made an agreement before you married her.""

My knees weakened.

"What agreement?""

Rachel took a deep breath.

"Before you met Emily, she had been involved with James. Their relationship ended badly. She later discovered she was pregnant.""

I shook my head.

"James never told me.""

"He told Emily he didn't want the responsibility. He was already involved in several business arrangements and didn't want a child complicating his life.""

I looked down at the document.

"And then I met Emily.""

"Yes.""

"She told me Lily was mine.""

Rachel nodded slowly.

"Emily loved you. She said you were the first man who made her feel safe. She was afraid that telling you the truth would destroy the family you were building together.""

I felt something inside me crack.

"She let me believe Lily was biologically mine for six years.""

"She believed you were her father in every way that mattered.""

I looked toward Daniel.

He hadn't said anything.

Finally, he closed the folder.

"Michael, whatever the biological relationship turns out to be, it doesn't automatically change your legal parental rights. We need to examine the original records and the adoption documents.""

I rubbed my face.

"Why did James suddenly want control of Lily's trust?""

Rachel answered quietly.

"Because Lily's biological family has another inheritance.""

I looked up.

"What inheritance?""

Rachel opened the second USB drive.

Emily had labeled it:

*BENNETT FAMILY ESTATE — ORIGINAL TRUST.*

Daniel connected it to his laptop.

A series of scanned legal documents appeared.

The first showed an inheritance established by our grandfather, Arthur Bennett, decades earlier.

I recognized the estate.

It included commercial properties, land holdings, and a substantial investment portfolio.

But the document contained a clause I had never seen.

The biological descendants of Arthur Bennett were entitled to certain shares when they reached adulthood.

James had been listed as a beneficiary.

So had another name.

Lily Bennett.

I stared at the screen.

"How much is this worth?""

Daniel studied the attached valuation.

"Based on the last independent assessment, approximately $18 million.""

I sat down slowly.

Eighteen million dollars.

That was why James wanted control of Lily's inheritance.

The $3.2 million trust was only the beginning.

He wanted to become the legal administrator of the larger family estate.

But something didn't make sense.

"If James is Lily's biological father, why would he need to steal anything? She's already his daughter.""

Rachel looked at me.

"Because the trust has restrictions. Lily controls her inheritance when she reaches adulthood. James cannot access it simply because he's her biological father.""

Daniel nodded.

"And if the guardianship application succeeded, Vanessa could have been appointed administrator. The two of them could potentially have gained access to assets that would otherwise remain protected.""

I looked at the birth certificate again.

"Then why was Vanessa named instead of James?""

Rachel hesitated.

"Because James wanted to keep his name out of the application.""

Daniel closed the laptop.

"We need to contact the estate trustees immediately.""

I nodded.

Then I picked up the birth certificate.

"There's something else I need to know.""

Rachel looked at me.

"Did Emily ever tell James she knew?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

"Three weeks before her surgery.""

My stomach tightened.

"What happened?""

Rachel looked down.

"She told him she would expose everything. Not just the financial fraud. She said she would tell you about Lily's biological father.""

I closed my eyes.

James had everything to lose.

His stolen money.

His position in the company.

His carefully protected reputation.

And the secret he had hidden for six years.

My phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A message appeared.

You should have left the past buried, Michael.

Another message followed.

Your daughter deserves to know who her real father is.

Then a photograph arrived.

It showed Lily sleeping in her hospital bed.

Taken from outside the room.

My blood turned to ice.

I immediately called Detective Mitchell.

"Someone photographed my daughter.""

Her voice sharpened.

"Where are you?""

I told her.

"Stay inside. Officers are on their way.""

Then another message appeared.

Bring the original birth certificate to the old Bennett estate tonight. Come alone if you want Lily to stay safe.

I showed Daniel.

He read it and shook his head.

"Absolutely not.""

But I was already staring at the photograph.

Someone had been watching my little girl.

And whoever sent that message knew exactly where she was.
