Chapter 4: The Message Emily Left Behind

"There's one more thing you should know, Michael. Emily didn't die without leaving you a message.""

Vanessa's words followed me all the way to the hospital.

I sat beside Lily's bed while a doctor examined her injured leg. The swelling had increased, and the physician suspected additional damage around the fracture.

"Mr. Bennett," Dr. Harris said gently, "I need to ask something. Has anyone been putting pressure on this leg?""

I looked at Lily.

She nodded.

The doctor frowned.

"That could explain why the swelling has worsened. We'll need another scan.""

Lily reached for my hand.

"Daddy, am I in trouble?""

I leaned forward and kissed her forehead.

"Never, sweetheart. You haven't done anything wrong.""

"But Vanessa said you would be angry if I told.""

My throat tightened.

"Why would she say that?""

Lily looked at the ceiling.

"She said you loved her more than me now.""

I closed my eyes.

For months, my daughter had been carrying something I should have noticed.

"Listen to me, Lily. Nobody will ever replace you. Nobody.""

She nodded, but her little fingers remained wrapped around mine.

When the doctor left, Daniel Brooks entered the room.

He carried a small evidence bag containing the silver key Vanessa had surrendered.

"How is she?"" he asked.

"She's stable. They're running another scan.""

Daniel pulled a chair closer.

"I've spoken with the police. They'll interview Vanessa and James separately. Neither should have access to your company's records or Emily's estate documents.""

"What about the key?""

"I had one of the security officers bring Emily's wooden box from your house. It's in the conference room downstairs.""

I stared at him.

"Did you open it?""

"No. I thought you should be there.""

I looked at Lily.

She was watching us.

"Daddy, is it Mommy's box?""

I nodded.

"Yes, baby.""

"Can I come?""

I hesitated.

Daniel spoke gently.

"Perhaps we should let her rest.""

Lily shook her head.

"I want to see Mommy's things.""

I didn't argue.

Twenty minutes later, we entered a private conference room.

Emily's wooden box sat on the table.

I hadn't seen it opened in nearly three years.

It was made of dark walnut, with a brass handle and a tiny scratch on the lid from the day Lily had dropped one of her toy blocks against it.

I remembered Emily laughing about that scratch.

"Don't worry," she'd said.

"A house full of children is supposed to show signs of life.""

I touched the lid.

For a moment, I couldn't open it.

Daniel placed the key beside my hand.

"Take your time.""

I turned it in the lock.

The box opened with a soft click.

Inside were Emily's old photographs, insurance papers, a collection of handwritten letters, and several folders tied with blue ribbon.

But something was missing.

The documents concerning Lily's trust.

I searched through the folders.

Nothing.

Then I noticed an envelope tucked beneath a photograph of Emily holding Lily on her first birthday.

My name was written across it.

Michael — Open this only if something happens to me.

My hands began trembling.

Daniel moved closer.

"Do you want me to read it?""

I shook my head.

"She wrote it for me.""

I opened the envelope.

The first line nearly broke me.

My love, if you're reading this, something has gone terribly wrong.

I sat down.

Emily's handwriting was unmistakable.

She explained that several months before her death, she had discovered irregularities in the financial reports James prepared for our company.

At first, she believed they were accounting mistakes.

Then she found transfers to shell companies and payments that had no legitimate business purpose.

She confronted James.

He told her she was misunderstanding the records.

But Emily didn't believe him.

She hired an independent accountant named Robert Hayes to investigate.

The letter continued.

James knows I found something. He has been asking questions about Lily's trust, and I don't trust the answers he's giving me.

I stopped reading.

Daniel's face had become serious.

"Michael, keep going.""

The next paragraph was shorter.

I don't believe Vanessa is involved. But if she ever becomes part of your life, please be careful. James introduced us at the company Christmas dinner, and I noticed how interested she was in our property portfolio.

I looked up.

"Vanessa knew Emily?""

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Apparently.""

I continued.

I've placed copies of the original financial records somewhere James will never think to look. The password is connected to the one memory he cannot erase.

Then came the final paragraph.

Please protect Lily. She is too young to understand the people around her. And Michael, if James ever tries to control her inheritance, don't trust anything he says.

The letter ended with three words.

I love you.

I lowered the paper.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Then Lily pointed at the photograph beneath the letter.

"Daddy, look.""

It was a picture of Emily standing beside James at a company picnic.

On the back, someone had written a date and a short sentence.

The day I discovered the second account.

Daniel picked up the photograph.

"Second account?""

I nodded slowly.

"James managed the original company accounts. If Emily found another account, she probably discovered where the money was going.""

Daniel examined the handwriting.

Then he turned the photograph over again.

"Michael, there's something else.""

He pointed toward the bottom corner.

A tiny sequence of numbers had been written beneath the date.

And suddenly I recognized them.

They were the numbers from the day Emily and I had first met.

But before I could explain, Daniel's phone rang.

He listened for a few seconds.

Then his expression changed.

"Michael, the police have finished searching Vanessa's handbag.""

"What did they find?""

Daniel looked at me.

"A second set of medical records.""

My stomach tightened.

"Medical records?""

"Yes. And they contain a prescription history that doesn't belong to Lily.""

He paused.

"There's also a recorded appointment scheduled for tomorrow morning.""

"With whom?""

May you like

Daniel looked at the paper in his hand.

"A private investigator.""
