Chapter 5: The Appointment That Was Never Supposed to Happen

The following morning, I sat in a police interview room with a cup of untouched coffee.

Lily was still at the hospital.

Her new X-rays had revealed additional soft-tissue damage, but thankfully, there was no new fracture. The doctors wanted to keep her under observation for another day.

I had barely slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Vanessa's hands gripping my daughter's injured leg.

At 9:15 a.m., Detective Laura Mitchell entered the room.

She was in her early forties, with short brown hair and a notebook tucked beneath one arm.

"Mr. Bennett, thank you for coming.""

"Have you found out what was in those medical records?""

She sat opposite me.

"Some of them concern your daughter. Others concern you.""

I frowned.

"Me?""

Detective Mitchell opened her folder.

"We found correspondence between Vanessa and a private medical consultant. She was asking questions about your mental health history, medication, and whether a physician could certify that you were unfit to manage your daughter's affairs.""

I stared at her.

"I've never had a psychiatric evaluation.""

"We understand that.""

"Then why would she need one?""

The detective folded her hands.

"Because someone appears to have been building a case that you were an unstable parent.""

I remembered the guardianship application.

The false accusations about Lily's injury.

The claims that I neglected her.

Everything was connected.

Detective Mitchell continued.

"Did you know that Vanessa had been documenting your behavior?""

I shook my head.

"What behavior?""

"Arguments. Late working hours. Times you left Lily with a babysitter. Even ordinary disagreements between you and your daughter.""

I felt sick.

"She was collecting evidence against me?""

"That's what it appears to be.""

The detective showed me several photographs.

One showed me leaving my office at 8:40 p.m.

Another showed Lily sitting in the back seat of my car.

A third showed me carrying groceries into my house.

They were ordinary moments.

But each had been accompanied by a handwritten note describing me as distracted, aggressive, or emotionally unavailable.

I pushed the photographs away.

"Who took these?""

"We're investigating that.""

Then Detective Mitchell placed another document on the table.

"This is the appointment scheduled for tomorrow.""

I read the name.

Dr. Richard Cole.

I looked up.

"Richard Cole? That's the attorney listed on the guardianship application.""

"Correct. However, the appointment isn't with an attorney. It's with a behavioral assessment clinic.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Why would Vanessa arrange that?""

"According to the messages, she intended to persuade you to attend under false pretenses.""

I leaned back.

"She was going to have me declared incompetent?""

The detective didn't answer immediately.

"Mr. Bennett, we have reason to believe the plan involved obtaining temporary control over your daughter and her inheritance. We are still determining the full extent of the financial scheme.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"What about James?""

"We've questioned him. He claims he was conducting legitimate financial restructuring.""

"Did he explain the forged signature?""

"He says he never saw the document.""

I laughed without humor.

"Of course he does.""

Detective Mitchell slid another photograph across the table.

It showed James entering a bank.

"Yesterday afternoon, he attempted to access a company account after your wedding was canceled.""

I stared at the image.

"Was he successful?""

"No. We had already notified the bank about the suspected fraudulent transactions.""

For the first time that morning, I felt a small measure of relief.

Then my phone vibrated.

It was a message from an unknown number.

Michael, you need to stop listening to Daniel. He doesn't know what Emily did.

I showed it to Detective Mitchell.

She read it carefully.

"Don't respond.""

Another message arrived.

Your wife wasn't innocent. Ask her what she was hiding from you.

I stared at the screen.

Detective Mitchell asked, "Do you recognize the number?""

"No.""

She photographed the messages.

Then she closed her folder.

"There's one more thing we need to discuss. Vanessa has requested to speak with you.""

I immediately shook my head.

"No.""

"She says she has information about Emily's death.""

My stomach dropped.

"What information?""

"She claims James was involved in something that happened shortly before your wife's surgery.""

I stood up.

"Then let her tell you.""

"She specifically requested that you be present.""

I looked at the detective.

"Why?""

"She says she can prove James had access to information about Emily's medical treatment.""

I thought about the letter.

The second account.

The financial records.

And Vanessa's warning about Emily leaving me a message.

"Is she trying to bargain for herself?""

"Possibly.""

I sat down again.

"Fine. I'll listen. But I won't be alone with her.""

An hour later, Vanessa entered the interview room.

She was no longer wearing her wedding dress.

Instead, she wore a gray sweater and dark trousers. Her hair was tied back, and her eyes were swollen.

She looked smaller without the expensive clothes and carefully arranged makeup.

But I felt nothing.

She sat opposite me.

"Michael.""

I said nothing.

She twisted her hands together.

"I know you're angry.""

"You're going to need a better opening than that.""

She swallowed.

"James told me Emily was planning to destroy him.""

I leaned forward.

"What does that have to do with her death?""

Vanessa looked toward Detective Mitchell.

"Can we speak privately?""

"No," I answered immediately.

She lowered her voice.

"James had access to Emily's medical records. He knew about her surgery before you did.""

My blood ran cold.

"How?""

"He had a friend at the hospital.""

Detective Mitchell leaned forward.

"Do you have evidence?""

Vanessa nodded.

"I have a recording.""

She pulled a small storage device from her pocket and placed it on the table.

"I recorded James talking to someone three weeks before Emily died.""

I stared at the device.

"What did he say?""

Vanessa's lips trembled.

"He said Emily had discovered the money transfers. He said she couldn't be allowed to talk to the investigators.""

Detective Mitchell reached for the device.

"Where was this recorded?""

"In James's car.""

I looked directly at Vanessa.

"Why didn't you tell anyone before?""

She began crying.

"Because I was afraid of him.""

I didn't move.

"You weren't afraid when you were hurting my daughter.""

Her face crumpled.

For several seconds, the only sound was her crying.

Then she whispered something that made Detective Mitchell stop writing.

"James didn't just want your money, Michael.""

May you like

She looked straight at me.

"He wanted Emily gone because she had discovered that the second account wasn't the only secret.""
