Chapter 2: My Brother's Name on the Screen

For several seconds, nobody moved.

James stood in the doorway, one hand resting against the frame. His perfectly knotted blue tie suddenly looked ridiculous against the fear spreading across his face.

Behind him, I could hear the wedding guests laughing and talking.

The string quartet continued playing.

The world outside that dressing room had no idea that my family was falling apart.

"Michael," James finally said.

"Listen to me.""

I held Lily closer.

"How long?""

He blinked.

"What?""

"How long have you been sleeping with my fiancée?""

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

"Michael, that's not—"

"Don't.""

One word.

She stopped.

James glanced at her, then back at me.

"This is a terrible misunderstanding. You're upset because of what happened with Lily, and I understand that.""

I almost laughed.

"You understand?""

"Yes. We can talk about this like adults.""

I raised the phone.

"Then explain this.""

James looked at the screen.

His jaw tightened.

"That's a business conversation.""

"Business?""

"Yes.""

"Why are you discussing property transfers with my bride on a secret phone?""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"Because I was trying to help you, Michael.""

I stared at her.

"Help me?""

"You've been under tremendous pressure. James and I were discussing ways to organize your assets before the marriage.""

I looked at my brother.

"Is that true?""

James nodded quickly.

"Exactly. That's all.""

Then Lily began crying again.

I felt her small hands trembling against my neck.

"Uncle James came to our house," she whispered.

I looked down.

"When, sweetheart?""

"On Tuesday. When you were at work.""

James immediately interrupted.

"She doesn't understand what she saw.""

I turned toward him.

"Don't interrupt her.""

Lily swallowed.

"He went into Mommy's room.""

My entire body went rigid.

Emily's room had remained almost untouched since her death. I had converted part of it into a storage space, but I still kept her personal belongings in a wooden chest.

"Which room, baby?"" I asked.

"The room with Mommy's pictures.""

"What did Uncle James do?""

"He opened the big brown box.""

I looked at James.

He didn't deny it.

Instead, he took one step forward.

"Michael, you need to understand something. Emily left behind complicated financial arrangements. I was helping Vanessa locate the necessary documents.""

"Why would Vanessa need my dead wife's documents?""

James rubbed his forehead.

"Because Lily's inheritance needs to be managed properly.""

I stared at him.

"Lily's inheritance?""

He nodded.

"Exactly. That's what I'm talking about. You're making this more dramatic than it needs to be.""

I looked down at Lily.

"What else happened, sweetheart?""

She wiped her nose with the back of her hand.

"Uncle James made Vanessa practice writing your name.""

The room went silent.

I remembered Emily's estate documents.

She had left Lily a trust worth approximately $3.2 million, consisting of investments, insurance proceeds, and shares in several properties.

The trust was protected until Lily turned twenty-five.

I was the appointed guardian responsible for overseeing her welfare, but the documents included strict protections against transferring the assets without independent authorization.

Vanessa had never been involved in those arrangements.

James knew every detail.

He had helped me organize them after Emily died.

I turned the phone toward him.

"What's this document?""

His eyes followed the screen.

The message thread contained a scanned property transfer agreement.

My name appeared at the bottom.

My signature appeared beneath it.

But I had never seen the document before.

I zoomed in.

The signature looked almost perfect.

Almost.

My middle initial was slightly wrong.

I had always written it with a particular curve.

Whoever had copied it had missed that detail.

"Who signed this?"" I asked.

James raised his hands.

"Michael, I can explain.""

"Did you forge my signature?""

"No!""

"Then why is it on a document I've never seen?""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Michael, listen. James was trying to protect us. You don't understand how complicated your company has become.""

I looked at her.

"Protect us from what?""

She hesitated.

"From uncertainty.""

"Try again.""

James moved closer.

"Give me the phone. I'll show you the full conversation.""

I stepped backward.

"You're not touching it.""

His expression hardened.

"Michael, don't be stupid.""

It was the first time he had spoken to me that way.

Not as my older brother.

Not as the man who had helped me bury my wife.

But as someone who was afraid of losing control.

I unlocked the phone using the password Lily had quietly given me earlier.

The messages continued for months.

Some were ordinary.

Others made my stomach turn.

Once he signs, we move the commercial properties into the holding company.

What about Lily's trust?

The guardianship application will take care of that.

And if he refuses?

He won't. He trusts me.

I read that last sentence twice.

He trusts me.

I had trusted James with company accounts, property contracts, and private financial information.

I'd even given him authority to negotiate deals on my behalf.

Then I opened the attached document.

It was an application requesting legal authority over Lily's inheritance.

The proposed financial administrator was Vanessa.

The proposed legal representative was a lawyer named Richard Cole.

And the supporting declaration claimed that I had become financially unstable and was preparing to relocate overseas.

None of it was true.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Why are you applying to control my daughter's inheritance?""

She started crying again.

"Because someone has to protect her!""

"From whom?""

"From you!""

I felt Lily stiffen in my arms.

James quickly stepped between us.

"Michael, this has gone too far. Give me the phone. We can resolve this privately.""

I stared at him.

"You're asking me to hand you evidence of a crime?""

His face changed.

Then he did something I never expected.

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded document.

"Fine," he said.

"If you want the truth, read this.""

He threw it onto the makeup table.

I picked it up.

It was a copy of the guardianship application.

At the bottom was a date scheduled for a hearing.

The hearing was set for the following Monday.

But what caught my attention wasn't the date.

It was the statement claiming that Lily had suffered repeated injuries while under my care.

I looked at the paragraph again.

It specifically described her recent leg fracture.

According to the document, I had ignored medical advice and refused to provide appropriate treatment.

My hands began shaking.

"They're using her injury against me," I whispered.

Vanessa looked away.

James said nothing.

Then Lily touched my cheek.

"Daddy?""

"Yes, baby?""

She looked frightened.

"Can I tell you something else?""

I nodded.

She glanced at Vanessa, then at James.

"Before I fell down the stairs at home, Vanessa told me to stand near the top.""

My blood ran cold.

"What stairs, sweetheart?""

"The stairs at our house.""

James suddenly moved toward her.

"That's enough!""

I stepped between them.

"Don't you dare come near my daughter.""

Lily buried her face against my shoulder.

May you like

Then she whispered the words that changed everything.

"She said if I got hurt, the judge would make you give me to her.""
