Chapter 8: The Man Who Wanted My Inheritance

I read the document three times.

Martin Hayes had become the replacement trustee less than twenty-four hours before the Hudson sale.

It wasn't a coincidence.

He had deliberately positioned himself to control the recovery clause.

My father stood beside the conference table, his jaw tight.

"How did this happen without my authorization?""

James examined the signature.

"The resignation appears to have been submitted electronically. We need the original filing and authentication records.""

"Get them.""

Margaret opened another folder.

"There's something else. The appointment was approved by the trust's advisory committee.""

I looked at her.

"Who sits on that committee?""

She hesitated.

"Richard, Martin, and Arthur Carter.""

My father let out a bitter laugh.

"So the people accused of stealing the assets appointed themselves to control them.""

James nodded.

"That's what the documents suggest.""

I sank into my chair.

"Can they do that?""

"Not necessarily. If the appointment was obtained through fraud, it can be challenged. But we need to move quickly.""

My father walked toward the windows.

"I trusted Martin with everything.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

He turned.

"Because he was there when I started Bennett Capital. He was my closest friend.""

I thought about the Christmas dinners, the family photographs, and the man who had once walked me down the aisle alongside my father.

"Did you ever suspect him?""

My father looked away.

"Not until recently.""

Before I could ask more, James received a call.

He listened carefully.

Then he covered the microphone.

"Richard, the advisory committee has scheduled an emergency meeting for tomorrow morning.""

My father frowned.

"Who requested it?""

"Martin.""

"What does he want?""

James looked at me.

"To remove Olivia as the trust's beneficiary.""

The room went silent.

I felt as though someone had opened a window in winter.

"Can he do that?""

"He's claiming Olivia breached the trust conditions by approving the Hudson transaction.""

I stared at the documents.

"But I didn't approve it.""

"That's our position," James replied.

"Martin's position is that the electronic authorization proves otherwise.""

My father shook his head.

"He can't remove her. The trust was established by her grandfather.""

James closed the folder.

"Then tomorrow, we make sure everyone understands that.""

That evening, I went home to the apartment I had rented after the divorce.

It was small compared with the townhouse Daniel and I had shared.

But it was mine.

I stood in the kitchen, looking at a photograph from our wedding.

Daniel had his arm around my waist.

I remembered how he had whispered that he would never let anything hurt me.

I placed the photograph facedown.

Then someone knocked.

I opened the door.

Vanessa stood in the hallway.

She was no longer wearing the designer dress from the restaurant.

Her hair was pulled into a messy ponytail, and she carried a large black handbag.

"Olivia, please. I need to talk.""

I didn't move.

"How did you find me?""

"Daniel gave me the address.""

I almost closed the door.

"That's not a good reason to let you in.""

She looked behind her.

"Please. Martin is going to kill me.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"Not literally. He's going to destroy my life.""

I stepped aside.

"Five minutes.""

She entered and placed her handbag on the kitchen counter.

Her hands were trembling.

I folded my arms.

"Why are you here?""

Vanessa pulled a folded document from her bag.

"Because I have something you need.""

She placed it on the counter.

It was a copy of the second contract.

The same agreement Daniel had mentioned.

I looked at the signatures.

Martin Hayes.

Arthur Carter.

Daniel Carter.

And a fourth signature.

Vanessa Reed.

I looked up.

"You signed this?""

She nodded.

"What is it?""

"An agreement that promised me five million dollars after the Hudson sale.""

My stomach tightened.

"And what did you promise them?""

She looked down.

"To help Daniel get you to sign the divorce settlement.""

I stared at her.

"How?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"I was supposed to make the marriage unbearable. Daniel would tell you he wanted a divorce, and I'd make sure you believed he was leaving because he'd fallen in love with someone else.""

I felt disgust rise in my throat.

"You didn't have to pretend.""

She flinched.

"I know.""

"Eleven months, Vanessa. Eleven months of humiliating me.""

She looked away.

"Martin said the divorce needed to happen before the trust's next review.""

I stared at her.

"Why?""

"Because once you turned thirty-three, the trust would automatically transfer controlling authority to you.""

My breath caught.

My birthday was only six weeks away.

I had never known there was a deadline.

Vanessa continued.

"Martin needed your shares transferred before then. He said if you became the controlling beneficiary, he would lose everything.""

I pulled out a chair.

"So the affair was part of a plan to get me divorced before my birthday.""

"Yes.""

I looked at her.

"And Daniel agreed?""

She nodded.

"Your ex-husband was promised control of Carter Construction after the transfer. He was supposed to receive a percentage of the redevelopment sale.""

"How much?""

"Ten million.""

I closed my eyes.

Ten million dollars.

That was how much my marriage had been worth to him.

"Why did you sign?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I wanted the money. I thought Daniel would leave you anyway. I thought I was helping him get what he wanted.""

I laughed quietly.

"And now?""

"Martin has frozen my accounts. He says I never earned the money.""

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a small USB drive.

"I copied the original correspondence before he discovered what I was doing.""

I took it.

"What's on it?""

"Emails. Bank transfers. Messages between Martin, Arthur, and Daniel. Everything.""

I stared at the drive.

"Why give it to me?""

She looked directly at me.

"Because Martin is planning to blame everything on Daniel and me. He has another document that makes it look like I acted alone.""

I studied her face.

"You're asking me to save you.""

"I'm asking you to help me tell the truth.""

I picked up the USB drive.

"Don't mistake this for forgiveness.""

"I don't.""

"You're going to speak to my attorneys. You'll provide every original record you have. And you'll tell the truth under oath.""

She nodded.

Then she stood.

As she reached the door, she stopped.

"Olivia?""

"What?""

"There's something about your father you should know.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Go on.""

Vanessa hesitated.

"Martin didn't just forge the recording of your father. He has the original.""

I stared at her.

"Where?""

"Arthur Carter's private safe.""

She opened the door.

Then she turned around one last time.

"And Olivia... the original recording proves that your father once agreed to give Martin temporary control of the trust.""

My throat went dry.

"Why would he do that?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't know. But Martin has been waiting twelve years to use it.""

She left.

I locked the door and immediately called my father.

He answered on the second ring.

"Olivia?""

"Vanessa just came to see me.""

Silence.

"Did she bring evidence?""

"Yes. But she also told me about the original recording.""

My father didn't respond.

"She says you agreed to give Martin temporary control of the trust twelve years ago.""

A long pause followed.

May you like

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

"Olivia, I did.""
