Chapter 4: The Debt They Put in My Name
"Four point two million dollars?""
I stared at the document on Margaret's tablet.
My name appeared beneath the words PERSONAL GUARANTOR.
The filing had been submitted at 8:42 that morning.
Someone had activated the agreement less than an hour before Margaret discovered it.
My father picked up his phone.
"Get me the company's outside counsel. Immediately.""
Margaret nodded and hurried toward the door.
I remained frozen.
"Dad, can they actually make me pay that money?""
He put his phone down.
"Not if the agreement was forged or obtained through fraud. But we need to move carefully. Until we establish what happened, they'll try to use the filing against you.""
I swallowed.
"I don't even have four million dollars.""
My father gave me a sad look.
"That's exactly why they chose you.""
The words landed harder than I expected.
For seven years, I had believed Daniel and I were building a future together.
Now I was beginning to understand that someone might have been building a trap around me long before our marriage ended.
At eleven thirty, Margaret returned with two attorneys.
One was a corporate litigation specialist named James Walker. The other, Emily Foster, handled financial fraud investigations.
They placed several documents on the conference table.
James adjusted his glasses.
"Ms. Bennett, we need to establish whether you ever signed the guarantee.""
"I didn't.""
"Did you sign any corporate documents during the six months before your divorce?""
"Yes. Several. Daniel told me they were restructuring papers.""
Emily leaned forward.
"Did you receive copies?""
I shook my head.
"Daniel's attorney said everything would be provided after the restructuring was complete.""
James exchanged a look with Emily.
"That's concerning.""
My father stood behind my chair.
"How quickly can we challenge the filing?""
"An emergency injunction may be possible," James replied.
"But we need the original agreement and evidence showing that the signature was fabricated or that the document was materially misrepresented.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"Where do we get the original?""
Margaret opened another folder.
"From Carter Construction's records.""
My father nodded.
"Then we'll request them.""
James raised a hand.
"Not yet. If someone inside the company is involved, we don't want to alert them before we secure the evidence.""
He was right.
But someone had already alerted them to our investigation.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Daniel.
We need to talk. Alone. Tonight.
I showed my father.
He shook his head.
"Don't go.""
Another message appeared.
If you care about what happens to your father, meet me.
My stomach tightened.
I typed a response.
What does my father have to do with this?
The answer came almost immediately.
Martin is going to destroy him. You need to hear the truth from me.
I looked up.
"He's using you to get me to meet him," my father said.
"Maybe.""
"Olivia, Daniel has lied to you repeatedly.""
"I know.""
"Then why give him another opportunity?""
I stared at the message.
"Because I want to know what Martin did. And Daniel seems terrified of him.""
My father considered it.
Finally, he turned to James.
"Can we arrange a recorded meeting with proper legal precautions?""
James nodded.
"If she chooses to meet him, we can arrange it through counsel.""
That evening, I met Daniel in a private conference room at my father's law firm's office.
He arrived fifteen minutes late.
His tie was crooked, and his expensive watch was missing.
For a man who had spent years obsessing over appearances, he looked remarkably ordinary.
He sat across from me.
"Thank you for coming.""
"Start talking.""
He glanced at the glass walls.
"Are we alone?""
"My attorneys are nearby.""
His expression changed.
"Of course. Your father has turned you against me.""
I leaned forward.
"You did that yourself.""
He looked down.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he said, "Martin approached my father four years ago.""
"What did he want?""
"Control of Carter Construction.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because the company had access to several valuable development projects. Martin wanted to move those contracts into another investment structure.""
"And my shares?""
Daniel rubbed his face.
"Your shares were the obstacle.""
I felt a cold sensation spread through my chest.
"So you married me to get access to them?""
"No.""
"Then explain why my name was used.""
He looked at me.
"At first, I didn't know about the trust. My father told me the company belonged to our family. I believed him.""
"And later?""
He didn't answer.
I understood.
"You found out.""
"Yes.""
"When?""
"Three years ago.""
I stood so abruptly that my chair moved backward.
"Three years?""
"Olivia, listen—"
"You knew I was the original beneficiary, and you said nothing?""
"I was trying to protect the company.""
I laughed bitterly.
"From its rightful owner?""
He reached across the table.
I pulled my hand away.
Then he said something that stopped me.
"Vanessa wasn't the reason I wanted the divorce.""
I stared at him.
"Don't.""
"She was helping Martin.""
"What?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"The affair was useful. It gave my father a reason to convince me that our marriage was already over. He said you would never cooperate once you discovered the trust.""
I felt sick.
"So you cheated on me because it was convenient?""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I made a terrible mistake.""
"No, Daniel. You made several decisions. Repeatedly.""
He looked up.
"Martin has the original second contract. He also has something else.""
"What?""
"A recording of your father.""
My blood ran cold.
Daniel leaned closer.
"Martin says Richard agreed to transfer control of the trust years ago. If that's true, your father may have known everything.""
Before I could respond, Daniel's phone vibrated.
He glanced at it.
His face turned white.
I followed his gaze.
A message appeared on the screen.
You were warned not to speak to Olivia.
Daniel stood immediately.
"Don't contact me again.""
He walked toward the door.
But before he left, he turned around.
"Olivia, there's one more thing.""
"What?""
He swallowed.
"Vanessa has the original recording.""
May you like
Then he disappeared into the hallway.
And I was left wondering whether the man who had betrayed me was finally telling the truth—or preparing one last lie.
