Chapter 6: My Father's Secret

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The recording ended with a faint clicking sound.

I stared at my father.

"Did you make that agreement?""

He looked at me.

"Not the way it sounds.""

"Then how did it happen?""

James closed the laptop.

"We need to verify the recording before drawing conclusions.""

I barely heard him.

My entire world had narrowed to the man standing opposite me.

The man who had comforted me after my divorce.

The man who had promised to protect me.

The man whose voice had just appeared on a recording discussing a secret arrangement involving my inheritance.

"Dad, please tell me you didn't know about the debt.""

He came toward me.

"Olivia, I would never knowingly put you in danger.""

"That's not what I asked.""

He stopped.

For the first time in my life, I saw uncertainty in his eyes.

Margaret quietly asked James to examine the recording.

Then my father turned toward me.

"Twelve years ago, Bennett Capital was going through a difficult restructuring. Martin discovered that some of the investments connected to your grandfather's trust had been used as collateral without proper authorization.""

I frowned.

"By whom?""

"Arthur Carter.""

I remembered Daniel mentioning his father.

"What did Arthur do?""

"He borrowed money against assets he had no authority to pledge. When the investments began losing value, Martin came to me with a proposal.""

My father sat down.

"He wanted me to transfer certain holdings into a new company. He claimed it would protect the trust from Arthur's creditors.""

"And you agreed?""

"I agreed to investigate it. Nothing more.""

He rubbed his forehead.

"But Martin recorded our conversation and later presented it as evidence that I had approved his restructuring plan.""

I stared at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I believed I had contained the problem.""

"How?""

"I removed Martin from several internal responsibilities and froze the affected assets.""

My voice trembled.

"But he was still your business partner.""

"Yes.""

"And you never told me that he had access to my inheritance?""

My father lowered his head.

"I thought I was protecting you.""

I walked toward the window.

Outside, Manhattan continued as if nothing had happened.

Cars moved through the streets. People hurried along the sidewalks, carrying coffee and talking on their phones.

Somewhere in that city, Daniel was probably still trying to save his company.

Vanessa was probably still wearing the bracelet.

And I was discovering that the people who had controlled my life had been discussing my future behind closed doors for years.

I turned back.

"What exactly was the original arrangement?""

My father took a deep breath.

"Your grandfather established a trust that owned the controlling interest in Carter Construction. The company was intended to be managed independently until you were old enough to assume control.""

I stared at him.

"So I was always the owner?""

"The beneficial owner, yes.""

"And Daniel knew?""

"He learned about the trust three years ago.""

My hands curled into fists.

"Then why did you let me marry him?""

My father looked devastated.

"I didn't know what he knew when you married him.""

"Did you investigate him?""

"Not thoroughly enough.""

I laughed once, without humor.

"Seven years, Dad.""

"I know.""

"Seven years of him telling me I wasn't good enough. Seven years of believing I had to prove myself to his family.""

My father stepped closer.

"I should have told you everything.""

I looked at him.

"Yes. You should have.""

For the first time, I didn't immediately forgive him.

And perhaps that was the hardest thing for him to accept.

An hour later, James returned with the preliminary audio analysis.

"The recording has been edited," he announced.

My father looked up.

"Can you prove it?""

"The audio contains two separate cuts. The first occurs immediately before Richard mentions the trust. The second occurs before Martin's response.""

I felt a wave of relief.

"So the recording was manipulated?""

"Possibly. We need the original file and a forensic comparison before making a definitive conclusion.""

Margaret entered behind him.

"And there's something else.""

She placed a printed email on the table.

It was sent from Martin's private account to Arthur Carter eleven months earlier.

The subject line read:

*THE OLIVIA PROBLEM.*

I read the first paragraph.

Daniel has confirmed that the marriage is becoming difficult to maintain. Once Olivia signs the ownership transfer, the remaining liabilities can be assigned to her without triggering a dispute over the trust.

I stopped.

The email continued.

Vanessa will help create the necessary circumstances. Daniel must ensure Olivia believes the separation is entirely personal.

I looked at Margaret.

"Vanessa was part of the plan?""

"It appears so.""

My father's face hardened.

I reached the final paragraph.

There is one complication. Olivia's father may eventually discover the transfer. If that happens, we will use the original recording to discredit him and force a settlement.

My throat went dry.

They hadn't just planned to steal my shares.

They had planned to destroy my father's credibility if he tried to protect me.

And Daniel had helped them.

I pushed the paper away.

"Why would Martin go to such lengths?""

My father answered quietly.

"Because the company is worth far more than anyone realized.""

James opened another document.

It contained a list of development projects controlled by Carter Construction.

Several were major commercial properties in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Their combined projected value exceeded $200 million.

Margaret pointed to one particular project.

"The Hudson redevelopment.""

My father frowned.

"That project wasn't supposed to be transferred.""

"It was," James replied.

"And the transfer is scheduled to close in forty-eight hours.""

I looked at the document.

The buyer was a private investment company.

The registered director was Martin Hayes.

My father stood immediately.

"They're trying to sell the assets before we can challenge the ownership.""

"There's another issue," Margaret said.

She turned her laptop toward us.

A new document had appeared in the company's electronic filing system.

It was a board resolution approving the sale.

And listed among the approving directors was Olivia Bennett.

I stared at the screen.

"I never approved that.""

James examined the electronic signature.

"Someone used your credentials.""

My father reached for his phone.

"Freeze every transaction connected to the project.""

James shook his head.

"We can request an emergency order, but the board has already authorized the transaction.""

I looked at the signature.

It was mine.

Again.

Then Margaret opened the attached authorization.

My eyes moved down the page.

The document stated that I had personally agreed to transfer my beneficial ownership rights in exchange for a settlement payment of $250,000.

There was even a bank account listed where the money had supposedly been deposited.

I recognized the account number.

It belonged to my old joint account with Daniel.

The account we had closed during the divorce.

I looked at my father.

"They're making it look like I accepted the money.""

He nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel appeared.

Olivia, please listen. Martin has decided you're no longer useful to him.

Another message followed.

He's planning to close the Hudson deal tomorrow. After that, he'll blame everything on you and Vanessa.

I typed quickly.

Why are you telling me this now?

His reply came almost instantly.

Because I finally saw the original contract.

Then a photograph arrived.

It showed a page with several signatures.

One belonged to Martin.

Another belonged to Arthur Carter.

The third belonged to Daniel.

But beneath them was a fourth signature.

My father's.

I stared at it.

Daniel sent one final message.

There's a clause on the last page that explains everything. Olivia, your father has been hiding the biggest part of this from you.

I looked across the table.

My father was already watching me.

"What did Daniel send?""

I slowly turned the phone toward him.

He studied the photograph.

His expression changed.

Then he whispered something I had never heard him say before.

"Oh, God.""

"What is it?""

He sat down heavily.

"That's the original trust agreement.""

I looked at the final page.

A clause had been highlighted in yellow.

It stated that if the trust's beneficiary was found to have knowingly participated in an unauthorized transfer, the entire trust could be dissolved.

And beneath the clause was a handwritten note.

The beneficiary must remain unaware until the transfer is complete.

I looked at my father.

"Why would you sign something like this?""

He shook his head.

"I didn't sign that page.""

Then he pointed to the date.

It was dated seven years earlier.

The month Daniel and I got married.

My father looked at me with an expression I couldn't understand.

"Olivia, there's something else you need to know.""

Before he could continue, Margaret's phone rang.

She answered.

Her face drained of color.

"What happened?"" my father demanded.

Margaret slowly lowered the phone.

"The Hudson redevelopment has just been sold.""

She looked at me.

"And the official documents name Olivia Bennett as the person who authorized the transaction.""

My father closed his eyes.

I stared at the screen.

May you like

The sale had been completed.

And somewhere, someone had just stolen more than two hundred million dollars using my name.
