Chapter 12: The Price of Betrayal
By noon, the Hudson sale proceeds had disappeared from the restricted account.
James called the bank's legal department.
My father contacted the authorities.
Margaret sat silently in the back of the conference room, staring at the documents she'd helped us recover.
I stood beside the window.
Two hundred million dollars.
Gone.
"How much was transferred?"" I asked.
James ended his call.
"Most of it. The money was divided among several accounts.""
"Can it be recovered?""
"Possibly. But the transfers crossed multiple financial institutions.""
My father walked toward the table.
"Then we follow every dollar.""
James nodded.
"We've already requested emergency preservation orders.""
I looked at the original trustee appointment.
"Can Martin still control the remaining assets?""
"Not if we successfully establish your appointment. But the forged court order creates a separate problem.""
Margaret finally spoke.
"Martin has connections in the legal system.""
My father turned.
"What are you saying?""
She hesitated.
"Arthur Carter has been making payments to a consulting firm that employs several former court administrators.""
James frowned.
"Do you have evidence?""
Margaret nodded.
"Not directly. But I know where the records are.""
"Where?""
"Arthur's private accounting office.""
My father immediately shook his head.
"We're not sending Olivia anywhere near that family again.""
I looked at him.
"I'm not asking to go alone.""
He turned.
"Olivia.""
"Dad, they have been using my name to steal from me for years. I want to know exactly how far this goes.""
James closed his folder.
"We can obtain the records legally. Margaret, you'll need to provide a formal statement.""
She nodded.
"I will.""
That afternoon, Vanessa arrived at the law firm's office with her attorney.
She looked different from the woman who had laughed at me in the restaurant.
Her expensive clothes were gone.
She wore a simple black coat and carried a cardboard box.
"I brought everything," she said.
James directed her to a conference room.
I remained in the hallway.
I didn't want to speak to her.
Not yet.
But as she passed me, she stopped.
"Olivia?""
I looked at her.
"I'm not going to ask you to forgive me.""
"Good.""
She swallowed.
"I just want you to know that Daniel didn't tell me everything.""
I folded my arms.
"You knew he was married.""
"Yes.""
"You knew he was lying to me.""
"Yes.""
"You knew about the money.""
She looked down.
"Yes.""
"Then what exactly didn't you know?""
Her eyes filled.
"That Martin planned to leave me with all the blame.""
I stared at her.
"Did you really think he'd give you five million dollars?""
"I thought I was important to him.""
I almost laughed.
"Vanessa, you were useful to him.""
She nodded slowly.
"I know that now.""
She entered the conference room.
Two hours later, James emerged carrying a new folder.
"Olivia, we found something.""
He placed several printed emails on the table.
The messages showed communications between Martin, Arthur, Daniel, and Vanessa.
One email particularly stood out.
It had been sent by Arthur Carter seven months earlier.
Once Olivia signs the divorce settlement, the guarantee becomes enforceable. Daniel will receive operational control, and Martin will handle the trust transition.
Another message came from Martin.
Do not tell Daniel about the original appointment. He must believe he is receiving permanent ownership.
I stared at the screen.
Daniel hadn't even been promised the company.
He had destroyed our marriage for something that Martin never intended to give him.
I looked at James.
"Does Daniel know?""
"According to the emails, he discovered it recently.""
My phone vibrated.
Daniel.
I answered.
"Why?""
His voice sounded exhausted.
"Olivia, I need to see you.""
"You've already said that.""
"This time it's different.""
"Then tell me.""
He hesitated.
"I found the original agreement between Martin and my father.""
"And?""
"Martin promised my father that once the Hudson sale closed, he'd transfer control of the company to him.""
I frowned.
"But you said Martin promised you control.""
"He promised me a management position. My father was supposed to own the assets.""
I felt a bitter smile form.
"So you destroyed our marriage for a job?""
"Olivia, I know how that sounds.""
"It sounds exactly like what you did.""
He exhaled.
"I have the document. I want to give it to you.""
"Send it to James.""
"I will. But I also need to tell you something about Vanessa.""
"What?""
"She wasn't the only person Martin used.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who else?""
"Someone inside Bennett Capital.""
I looked at Margaret.
She was sitting across the room, speaking quietly with her attorney.
"Who?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Margaret.""
I stared at her.
"She already admitted she knew about the original trust.""
"No. You don't understand. She wasn't just hiding documents.""
"What are you saying?""
"She received money from my father.""
I looked toward James.
He immediately moved closer.
Daniel continued.
"Check the consulting payments. Her name is on one of the accounts.""
My heart sank.
"Why would she help Martin?""
"Because he promised to pay off a debt.""
"What debt?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Her son's.""
The call ended.
I looked at James.
"Check Margaret's financial records.""
He frowned.
"Olivia, that's a serious allegation.""
"I know. But we need to verify it.""
Within an hour, the preliminary results arrived.
A company named Westbridge Advisory had received regular payments from Arthur Carter.
Its director was listed as a woman named Susan Collins.
Margaret's daughter.
The payments totaled $640,000 over three years.
James placed the report on the table.
My father looked devastated.
"She told us she was trying to protect Olivia.""
I stared at the records.
"Maybe she was doing both.""
Margaret was brought into the room.
James showed her the transactions.
She looked at the documents.
Then she sat down.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, she whispered, "I can explain.""
My father stood.
"Then explain.""
Margaret began crying.
"My son had a gambling problem. He owed money to people who threatened him. Arthur offered to help.""
"So you accepted payments?"" I asked.
She nodded.
"At first, I thought they were legitimate consulting fees. Then I discovered where the money came from.""
"And you kept taking it?""
She looked at me.
"Yes.""
My father turned away.
"After everything I trusted you with?""
Margaret wiped her cheeks.
"I never wanted Olivia hurt.""
"But you helped them hide the documents.""
"I was afraid.""
I leaned forward.
"Did you know about the forged guarantee?""
She nodded.
The room went silent.
"Did you know Daniel was using my signature?""
"Yes.""
I felt my throat tighten.
"Then you weren't protecting me.""
Margaret lowered her head.
"No.""
James collected the documents.
"Margaret, you'll need to provide a complete statement. Your cooperation may be considered, but it doesn't erase your involvement.""
She nodded.
Then she reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.
"I kept this because I thought one day I might need it.""
She placed it in front of me.
Inside was a letter from Arthur Carter.
It was dated three weeks before my wedding.
I read the first sentence.
Once Olivia becomes part of our family, the final transfer will be much easier.
My hands began to shake.
The letter continued.
Daniel must keep her comfortable until the ownership documents are secured. If she ever questions the arrangement, remind her that her father's reputation is tied to the company.
I looked up.
"Arthur planned this before I married Daniel.""
Margaret nodded.
"Yes.""
I turned to the final paragraph.
It contained a sentence that made my blood run cold.
The only person who can stop us is the original beneficiary. If she ever learns the truth, make sure she understands that her father approved the arrangement.
My father took the letter from me.
His face hardened.
"Arthur is going to answer for this.""
But before anyone could respond, James's phone rang.
He listened.
Then he looked at me.
"Olivia, the bank has recovered a portion of the transferred funds.""
I exhaled.
"How much?""
"Forty-seven million dollars.""
My father nodded.
"Good. Keep going.""
James hesitated.
"There's a condition.""
"What condition?""
"The account holder is claiming the money belongs to Olivia personally.""
I frowned.
"Why would they do that?""
James turned his phone toward me.
A photograph showed a bank authorization.
The account holder was Daniel Carter.
And beneath his signature was a statement claiming that he had transferred the money to me as part of our divorce settlement.
I stared at the document.
Then my phone rang again.
This time, it was Daniel's father.
Arthur Carter.
I answered.
His voice was calm.
"Olivia, I believe we should stop this before everyone gets hurt.""
I said nothing.
He continued.
"I have something you need. Something your father has hidden from you for twelve years.""
My father moved closer.
"What is it?"" I asked.
Arthur gave a quiet laugh.
"The truth about your grandfather's death.""
My entire body went cold.
He continued.
"Meet me tomorrow. Alone. And I'll show you the medical report your father never wanted you to see.""
Then he hung up.
I slowly lowered the phone.
My father stared at me.
"Olivia, don't listen to him.""
But I had already noticed something on the letter Margaret had given us.
A handwritten note in the margin.
It was in my grandfather's handwriting.
If anything happens to me, ask Arthur why he changed the medication.
I looked at my father.
May you like
And suddenly, the financial fraud was no longer the only mystery we needed to solve.
*Someone might have known the truth about my grandfather's final days all along.*
