Chapter 1: The Woman Wearing My Husband’s Lies
Three days after my divorce, my ex-husband's mistress called me a gold digger in the middle of a Manhattan restaurant.
She thought the older gentleman having lunch with me was my new sugar daddy.
She had no idea she was insulting the man whose signature could destroy her entire future.
My name is Olivia Bennett. I was thirty-two years old, and until three days earlier, I had been married to Daniel Carter for seven years.
Seven years of believing that love meant standing beside someone when the world turned against them.
Seven years of helping him build a construction company from a struggling family business into a respected New York corporation.
Seven years of sacrificing my own career because Daniel insisted that we were building something together.
And seven years of being lied to.
I was sitting across from my father, Richard Bennett, at a quiet corner table in the Whitmore Hotel's restaurant. The afternoon sunlight filtered through enormous windows, illuminating the white tablecloth and silver cutlery.
My father was wearing his usual navy suit.
At sixty-five, Richard had silver hair, a calm expression, and the kind of presence that made people instinctively lower their voices when he entered a room.
He had spent the morning discussing a business acquisition.
I had spent the morning trying not to think about my divorce.
"You're barely touching your food," he observed.
I moved a piece of salmon around my plate.
"I'm fine, Dad.""
"Olivia, I've known you for thirty-two years. You have never been good at pretending.""
I managed a small smile.
"Maybe I'm just tired.""
He reached across the table and covered my hand with his.
"You don't have to defend that man anymore.""
I looked down.
The divorce settlement had been signed three days earlier. Daniel had insisted on a clean separation, and his attorney had pressured me into accepting a modest financial arrangement in exchange for giving up my shares in Carter Construction.
I'd signed because I wanted the marriage over.
I hadn't wanted another courtroom battle.
I certainly hadn't wanted to spend another minute looking at the man who had betrayed me.
"Let's talk about something else," I whispered.
My father nodded.
Then a familiar laugh came from behind me.
"Well, well. Look who moved on quickly!""
My fingers tightened around my fork.
I turned.
Vanessa Reed stood beside our table in a cream-colored designer dress. Her blonde hair fell perfectly over her shoulders, and a diamond bracelet glittered on her wrist.
Daniel stood next to her.
He wore a charcoal suit I had helped choose for his company's annual investor dinner.
His expression changed when he saw me.
For half a second, he looked uncomfortable.
Then Vanessa followed his gaze.
"Oh, Daniel! Isn't this interesting?""
She glanced at my father.
"Already found yourself a rich old man to pay your bills?""
A couple at the neighboring table stopped talking.
I slowly placed my fork down.
"Vanessa, we're having lunch. Please leave us alone.""
She laughed.
"Private lunch? Sweetheart, you're practically advertising yourself.""
Daniel adjusted the strap of her handbag.
It was an expensive Italian designer bag. I recognized it because I had seen the purchase receipt in our joint account six months earlier.
"Vanessa," he said quietly, "let's not make a scene.""
But he didn't ask her to apologize.
Instead, he looked at me.
"Olivia, honestly, even after everything, you could show some dignity.""
I stared at him.
"Excuse me?""
"You've been divorced for three days. Couldn't you wait a little before finding someone else?""
I almost laughed.
This was the man who had been sleeping with Vanessa for eleven months before our divorce.
The man who had told me he was working late while booking weekend suites in the Hamptons.
The man who had called me paranoid when I discovered hotel charges on our credit card.
And now he was lecturing me about dignity.
My father put down his coffee.
"Olivia, do you know these people?""
Daniel stepped forward before I could answer.
"Sir, I apologize for this awkward situation. Olivia is my ex-wife.""
He extended a hand.
"Daniel Carter.""
My father looked at the offered hand but didn't take it.
Daniel slowly lowered his arm.
Vanessa leaned toward my father.
"Be careful with her, sir. She married Daniel for his money, too.""
My father's eyebrows rose.
"Did she?""
Daniel gave a humorless chuckle.
"Unfortunately. My family gave her everything. Without us, she wouldn't have enjoyed the lifestyle she had.""
I felt something tighten in my chest.
For seven years, I had attended meetings with suppliers who refused to take Daniel seriously.
I had personally negotiated payment extensions when the company couldn't meet payroll.
I had even used my own savings to keep his business alive during a disastrous construction project.
Yet he was standing in front of me, pretending I had been nothing more than an expensive accessory.
Then Vanessa lifted her wrist.
"Daniel bought me this. Twelve thousand dollars. He knows how to treat a real woman.""
My eyes landed on the bracelet.
A delicate diamond tennis bracelet.
The same one I had discovered hidden inside our home safe six months earlier.
Daniel had told me it belonged to a business client.
He had even accused me of being insecure when I questioned him.
I looked at him.
"So that's who the bracelet was for.""
His jaw tightened.
"Olivia, don't start.""
"Don't start what? Asking questions?""
Vanessa smiled triumphantly.
"Jealousy doesn't look good on you.""
I pushed my chair back.
"You're right. It doesn't.""
Then I turned toward my father.
"Dad, I think we should leave.""
The silence was immediate.
Vanessa's smile vanished.
Daniel blinked.
"Wait. What did you just call him?""
My father rose.
He calmly buttoned his navy jacket, picked up his leather briefcase, and looked directly at Vanessa.
"She called me Dad.""
Vanessa gave a nervous laugh.
"That's impossible.""
My father extended his hand.
"Richard Bennett. Olivia's father.""
Daniel's face lost its color.
"Richard... Bennett?""
"Founder of Bennett Capital Group.""
For the first time since I had known him, Daniel appeared unable to find a single word.
Bennett Capital Group was one of the largest private investment firms in the region.
And for the past four months, Daniel's family had been desperately trying to secure an investment partnership with us.
My father glanced at Daniel's stunned expression.
"Something wrong, Mr. Carter?""
Daniel swallowed.
"Sir, I had no idea Olivia was your daughter.""
My father picked up his briefcase.
"That's interesting. You were married to her for seven years.""
He paused.
"You never asked about her family?""
Daniel opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Vanessa slowly lowered her wrist.
And then my father's phone began ringing.
He checked the screen.
"Speaking of your family," he said, "your father has been trying to reach me all morning.""
Daniel looked almost desperate.
"Sir, perhaps we could discuss this privately.""
My father answered the call.
"Arthur, I'm standing right in front of your son.""
He listened for several seconds.
Then his expression changed.
"Yes. I think we need to discuss the documents he made your former daughter-in-law sign.""
Daniel took a step backward.
Because suddenly, this wasn't about an embarrassing lunch anymore.
May you like
It was about something his father apparently hadn't told him.
And judging by Daniel's face, he was terrified that I was about to discover it.
