Chapter 7: The Memory She Tried to Bury
The man standing in the doorway changed the atmosphere instantly.
He wasn’t wearing a tuxedo like the guests.
He wasn’t holding a drink.
He wasn’t there to celebrate.
He looked like someone who had spent years carrying a secret and had finally become too tired to carry it alone.
Vanessa stared at him.
And for the first time that night, she looked completely powerless.
“No,” she whispered.
The man stepped into the ballroom.
“I’m sorry, Vanessa.””
Lena looked between them.
“Who are you?””
The man swallowed.
“My name is Daniel Brooks.””
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“Brooks?””
The man nodded.
“I was the mechanic who inspected the car.””
A wave of shock moved through the room.
Lena’s face went pale.
“The car?””
Daniel looked at her.
“Yes.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Daniel ignored her.
“I know exactly what happened.””
Ethan moved beside Lena.
“Start from the beginning.””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“I should have spoken three years ago.””
Lena’s voice was quiet.
“Why didn’t you?””
He looked down.
“Because Vanessa paid me not to.””
The silence that followed felt heavier than shouting.
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s a lie.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You gave me twenty thousand dollars.””
A few guests gasped.
“You told me if I changed the report, nobody would get hurt.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You’re trying to save yourself.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
That honesty surprised everyone.
“I am.””
He looked at Lena.
“But I’m also trying to stop carrying this.””
Lena gripped the arms of her wheelchair.
“What did you change?””
Daniel took a breath.
“The brakes.””
Ethan’s face changed.
“What about them?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“They weren’t damaged from the accident.””
Nobody moved.
“They were damaged before.””
Lena closed her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“No.””
Ethan immediately looked at her.
“Lena.””
She shook her head.
“I remember something.””
Vanessa went still.
“What?””
Lena looked up slowly.
“I remember telling you the brakes felt strange.””
The room froze.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“Yes, you do.””
Lena’s voice trembled.
“You told me I was imagining it.””
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“She was right.””
Ethan stared.
“What?””
Daniel nodded.
“The brake line had been cut.””
The room exploded with whispers.
A guest covered her mouth.
Someone near the bar said:
“Cut?””
Daniel continued.
“I thought it was an accident at first. But when I inspected the vehicle afterward, I found the damage wasn’t natural.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Ethan stepped toward her.
“Who knew?””
Vanessa said nothing.
“Who knew about the brakes?””
Still nothing.
Then Lena spoke.
“You.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You knew.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
Lena wiped her tears.
“I’m finally understanding.””
The anger in her voice was different.
It wasn’t explosive.
It was stronger.
It was the anger of someone who had spent years silent.
“You watched me blame myself.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I was scared.””
“You watched me stop living.””
“I was scared!””
The entire ballroom went quiet.
Vanessa’s voice cracked.
“I didn’t know what would happen.””
Ethan stared at her.
“So you covered it up.””
“I thought I could fix it.””
Lena laughed softly.
A painful sound.
“You didn’t fix anything.””
She looked at her sister.
“You erased me.””
Nobody spoke.
I watched Vanessa carefully.
For years, she had controlled every room she entered.
But now she was surrounded by people who finally saw her.
And she hated it.
She turned toward Daniel.
“You have no proof.””
Daniel reached into his jacket.
“I do.””
He pulled out a small folder.
“I kept copies.””
Vanessa’s face went white.
Ethan took the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Messages.
Everything Vanessa thought was gone.
Ethan looked through them.
Then he stopped.
“What is this?””
Daniel looked away.
“I found something else.””
Ethan held up a printed message.
A text conversation.
One message was from Vanessa.
*Make sure the report says mechanical failure. She can’t know.*
Lena stared at the words.
“She was trying to protect me?””
Nobody answered.
Because the truth was obvious.
No.
She was protecting herself.
Ethan folded the paper.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
For a moment, she looked almost human.
Almost like a sister.
Then she said:
“You think Lena would have survived the truth?””
Lena answered before Ethan could.
“I survived you.””
Vanessa froze.
Those four words destroyed whatever remained of her confidence.
Then Ethan’s phone buzzed.
He looked down.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Lena noticed.
“What happened?””
Ethan turned the screen toward Daniel.
The mechanic’s face changed.
“No.””
“What?”” Ethan asked.
Daniel stepped backward.
“I thought that was the only copy.””
Ethan looked at the message.
Then at Vanessa.
“Someone just tried to delete the police evidence.””
Vanessa said nothing.
But she smiled.
May you like
And that scared me more than anything.
Because someone was helping her.
