Chapter 14: The Last Secret My Father Protected
I didn’t remember leaving the ballroom.
One moment I was standing there surrounded by secrets.
The next, I was sitting in Ethan’s car, staring through the window at Atlanta’s lights.
Everything I believed about my life had changed in one night.
My father.
My past.
The people I trusted.
All of it had cracks.
Ethan sat quietly beside me.
He didn’t try to give me advice.
He didn’t tell me everything would be okay.
Maybe because he knew some things couldn’t be fixed with simple words.
Finally, he spoke.
“Emma.””
I looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked away.
“Everyone is sorry.””
The words came out colder than I expected.
Ethan nodded.
“You’re right.””
That surprised me.
He didn’t defend himself.
He didn’t explain.
He just accepted it.
“I spent years believing I could protect Lena by handling everything myself.””
He looked at his hands.
“And I failed.””
I thought about that.
Maybe that was the difference.
Some people hid things because they wanted power.
Others hid things because they were afraid.
But the result was the same.
Someone else paid the price.
The car stopped outside the police station.
Inside, Detective Harris waited.
“We found the document.””
He placed a folder on the table.
“The final authorization.””
I opened it.
My eyes immediately went to the signature.
I knew that name.
I had written thank-you cards to him as a child.
He had attended my father’s funeral.
He had hugged me and told me my father was a good man.
Robert Ellis.
My father’s best friend.
The man who owned the garage where my father worked.
“No.””
Detective Harris watched me.
“You know him?””
I nodded slowly.
“He was family.””
Ethan looked at the document.
“Why would he do this?””
Detective Harris opened another folder.
“Because he benefited.””
Inside were financial records.
Payments.
Transfers.
Names.
Robert Ellis had received money from Richard Caldwell.
For years.
My hands trembled.
“He sold my father.””
Detective Harris nodded.
“Your father discovered the payments.””
“And?””
“He confronted Robert.””
I looked down.
“What happened?””
The detective was quiet.
Then:
“Your father planned to expose everyone.””
A cold silence filled the room.
“He had evidence.””
The letter.
The storage unit.
The key.
Everything.
Detective Harris continued.
“Robert knew your father wouldn’t stop.””
Ethan looked at him.
“So he arranged for him to disappear.””
My head snapped up.
“What?””
The detective looked uncomfortable.
“We reopened your father’s death investigation.””
My heart raced.
“My father died in a car accident.””
“Yes.””
“Are you saying?””
Detective Harris nodded.
“We believe it may not have been an accident.””
The world seemed to tilt.
I grabbed the edge of the table.
“No.””
I had spent years missing my father.
Years believing I had simply lost him.
But now I had to consider something worse.
Someone had taken him.
Ethan placed a hand near mine.
Not touching.
Just there.
A choice.
A question.
I took a breath.
“What happens now?””
Detective Harris closed the folder.
“Now we bring everyone involved to justice.””
The next few days happened faster than I could understand.
Richard Caldwell was charged.
Vanessa faced multiple charges.
Daniel cooperated fully.
And Robert Ellis disappeared.
That was the only thing that worried everyone.
Because people who run from the truth usually know what they’re running toward.
Three days after the gala, I received a package.
No return address.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
A note.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Only one sentence was written.
*Your father died because he found out the truth about Lena.*
I stared at the words.
Then I saw the signature.
Robert Ellis.
Below it was another line.
A warning.
*If you keep searching, you’ll find out why your father chose Lena over you.*
My heart stopped.
Because I knew my father.
And I knew one thing.
He would never abandon me.
Unless…
Unless someone wanted me to believe he did.
I looked at the note again.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Silence.
Then a familiar voice.
A voice I hadn’t heard in years.
A voice that made me drop the phone.
“Emma?””
I couldn’t breathe.
May you like
Because the voice said:
“I’m sorry you thought I was gone.””
