Chapter 11: The Father I Never Knew

I wanted to believe Vanessa was lying.

I needed to believe it.

Because it was easier.

It was easier to hate Vanessa.

It was easier to believe my father had been a hero.

But the look on Daniel’s face told me there was more.

And that scared me.

“My father helped hide the truth?””

My voice barely came out.

Daniel looked at me.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I need an answer.””

Ethan placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Let him speak.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Your father wasn’t a bad man.””

I laughed once.

“People always say that before explaining something terrible.””

Daniel looked down.

“He made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“He agreed to alter the report.””

The words hurt more than I expected.

I stared at him.

“Why?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Because Vanessa and Richard threatened him.””

My anger became confusion.

“They threatened him?””

“Yes.””

Daniel nodded.

“They knew he had the original inspection results.””

Ethan looked serious.

“So Michael changed the report under pressure.””

Daniel nodded.

“But he regretted it.””

I shook my head.

“Then why didn’t he fix it?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because he was trying.””

The room went quiet.

“He secretly kept copies of everything.””

He pointed at the key.

“That key belonged to a storage unit.””

My heart raced.

“What storage unit?””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“The one Michael used to hide the evidence.””

The police officer immediately stepped forward.

“Do you know the location?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Nobody moved.

Then Lena spoke.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because I was scared.””

The honesty was painful.

Too many people had been scared.

Too many people had looked away.

And Lena had paid the price.

Ethan turned to the officer.

“Can we access it?””

The officer nodded.

“If it’s connected to the case, we’ll need authorization.””

Ethan looked at him.

“You’ll have it.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“You’re all making a mistake.””

Nobody looked at her.

“You think the storage unit will prove everything.””

She smiled.

“It won’t.””

Ethan turned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa leaned against the table.

“It means my father wasn’t the only one involved.””

The room froze.

Lena looked at her.

“Who else?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

She looked at me.

And I knew.

She wanted me to ask.

“Who else?”” I repeated.

Vanessa smiled.

“Your father.””

My chest tightened.

“You already said that.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I mean before the accident.””

Nobody understood.

Except Vanessa.

“You don’t know anything about your father’s last year, do you?””

I went silent.

Because she was right.

My father died suddenly.

Everyone said it was a heart attack.

I never questioned it.

I was young.

I was grieving.

I accepted what people told me.

Vanessa continued.

“Your father was investigating the Caldwells.””

Ethan stared.

“Why would he?””

“Because he found out Richard was hiding something.””

“What?””

Vanessa smiled.

“The accident wasn’t the beginning.””

The room became silent.

“It was the end of something that started years before.””

Lena looked terrified.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I’m saying Michael Hayes knew exactly who Richard Caldwell really was.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Enough.””

But Vanessa wasn’t looking at him.

She was looking at me.

“You came here tonight because you saw someone being hurt.””

My breathing slowed.

“You thought it was just a woman in a wheelchair.””

She smiled sadly.

“But you didn’t know you were walking into your father’s unfinished fight.””

A phone rang.

Everyone turned.

It was the police officer.

He answered.

“Yes?””

He listened.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

Ethan immediately asked:

“What happened?””

The officer lowered the phone.

“We found the storage unit.””

Everyone waited.

“And?””

He looked at me.

“There’s a box inside.””

My heart pounded.

“What’s in it?””

The officer swallowed.

“Documents.””

He paused.

“And a letter.””

“From who?””

May you like

The officer looked down.

“From your father.””
