Chapter 13: The Man Who Knew Too Much
The photograph felt heavier than the evidence bag holding it.
Daniel Brooks.
The man who had exposed Vanessa.
The man who had admitted his own fear.
The man who had helped us uncover the truth.
Standing beside the damaged car.
My mind refused to accept it.
“No.””
The word escaped my mouth before I could stop it.
Daniel looked at the photograph.
And for the first time that night, he had no explanation.
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Daniel.””
The mechanic slowly lowered his eyes.
“I can explain.””
Nobody moved.
Those four words had become the most dangerous sentence in the room.
Every person who had said them tonight had been hiding something.
Lena looked at Daniel.
“You were there?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Yes.””
Her face fell.
“And you never told me?””
“I was afraid.””
The anger in Lena’s eyes was different from before.
It wasn’t the anger of betrayal.
It was the pain of realizing another person had chosen silence.
Again.
“How many people were afraid?”” she whispered.
Nobody answered.
Because she already knew.
Too many.
Daniel stepped forward.
“I wasn’t there when the accident happened.””
The detective’s officer raised an eyebrow.
“But the photo shows you at the scene.””
Daniel nodded.
“I arrived afterward.””
“When?””
Daniel looked down.
“Minutes after the crash.””
Ethan held the photograph.
“Then why was this hidden?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
Then Richard.
Then finally at me.
“Because I wasn’t just a mechanic.””
The room went still.
“What does that mean?”” Ethan asked.
Daniel took a breath.
“My father worked for Richard Caldwell.””
Vanessa looked shocked.
“What?””
Daniel nodded.
“He was the head of security for the Caldwell family.””
Lena stared.
“Your father?””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“My father knew everything.””
The detective stepped closer.
“Everything about what?””
Daniel hesitated.
“About the people Richard paid to keep problems quiet.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“You mean people who covered up crimes?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Ethan’s voice became sharp.
“And you continued that work?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Not by choice.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.””
Daniel ignored her.
“After the accident, my father told me to destroy the original inspection records.””
My heart tightened.
“Did you?””
Daniel looked at me.
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
“I copied them first.””
Ethan watched him carefully.
“Why?””
Daniel looked toward Lena.
“Because I saw her.””
Lena frowned.
“What?””
“The night of the accident.””
He paused.
“You were trapped in the car. You were injured. Vanessa was crying.””
Vanessa looked away.
“And Richard was not.””
The room became silent.
Daniel continued.
“He wasn’t asking if Lena was okay.””
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“What was he doing?””
“Calling someone.””
“Who?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“Stop.””
Everyone looked at her.
For once, she wasn’t angry.
She was scared.
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew this day would come.””
Vanessa whispered:
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“You don’t get to say that anymore.””
The detective stepped forward.
“Daniel, you need to tell us everything.””
Daniel nodded.
“I will.””
He looked at me.
“But there’s something Emma needs to know first.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Daniel reached into his pocket.
He pulled out an old photograph.
Not from the accident.
Not from the storage unit.
From years earlier.
He handed it to me.
I looked down.
My father was in the picture.
Standing beside Daniel’s father.
And beside them was another person.
Someone I recognized.
Someone who made my blood run cold.
“My father worked with him?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
I stared at the photograph.
Because the third person wasn’t a Caldwell.
It wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t Richard.
It was someone from my own life.
Someone I trusted.
Someone who had comforted me after my father died.
Someone who had told me the death was an accident.
I looked at Daniel.
“How long have you known?””
His silence answered before his words did.
“Since the beginning.””
The room disappeared.
“You knew?””
Daniel looked devastated.
“I thought protecting you was the only way.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You all keep saying that.””
I looked around.
Vanessa.
Richard.
Daniel.
Everyone had used the same excuse.
Protection.
Love.
Family.
But all they had done was take away the truth.
“I didn’t need protection.””
My voice became stronger.
“I needed honesty.””
Nobody spoke.
Then the detective’s phone rang.
He answered.
“Yes?””
He listened.
His face changed.
“What?””
Ethan noticed.
“What happened?””
The detective looked at me.
“We found the person who gave the order.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
The detective looked down at the screen.
Then said:
“The person who signed the final cover-up document.””
A pause.
“The signature belongs to someone who was never investigated.””
Lena whispered:
“Who?””
The detective looked at the photograph in my hand.
May you like
Then at me.
“Your father’s closest friend.””
