Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Smile

The ballroom was no longer a charity event.

It was a courtroom without a judge.

Everyone had chosen a side.

And for the first time in her life, Vanessa Caldwell wasn’t the person everyone wanted to impress.

She was the person everyone wanted answers from.

Ethan stepped away from the crowd with Lena beside him.

“Show me,” she whispered.

He handed her the phone.

I wasn’t trying to look.

I really wasn’t.

But the expression on Lena’s face pulled my attention.

She watched the screen.

Then her hand covered her mouth.

“What did she do?”” I asked quietly.

Lena looked at me.

There were tears in her eyes.

“She lied.””

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

“You’re being dramatic.””

Ethan turned.

“Stop talking.””

Two simple words.

But Vanessa actually stopped.

That was when I understood how powerful Ethan really was.

Not because of his money.

Because Vanessa was afraid of disappointing him.

Ethan walked closer.

“Tell them what happened last month.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You’re seriously doing this?””

“Yes.””

“In front of everyone?””

“Yes.””

Her smile faded.

“You’re my brother-in-law.””

“No.””

Ethan’s voice was cold.

“I’m Lena’s husband.””

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa looked around the room, searching for someone to save her.

Nobody did.

Finally, she sighed.

“You all want the truth?””

She pointed at Lena.

“She has always been fragile.””

Lena looked down.

I felt anger rise inside me.

But Ethan raised a hand slightly.

Let her speak.

Vanessa continued.

“She wasn’t supposed to survive the accident.””

The room became silent.

My heart tightened.

Accident?

Lena closed her eyes.

“She begged me not to tell anyone.””

Vanessa smiled.

“There it is. The sympathy.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“What did you tell people?””

Vanessa shrugged.

“That Lena gave up on her old life.””

I looked at Lena.

“What happened?””

She didn’t answer.

Ethan did.

“Three years ago, Lena was in a car accident.””

He paused.

“She lost the ability to walk.””

The room stayed quiet.

“Vanessa told everyone Lena didn’t want visitors.””

Lena looked at her sister.

“You told them I didn’t want them.””

Vanessa’s eyes flickered.

“You were depressed.””

“I was recovering.””

“You were embarrassed.””

“I was scared.””

The difference between those two words filled the room.

Vanessa shook her head.

“You always wanted people to feel sorry for you.””

Lena looked at her sister for a long moment.

Then she said something I would never forget.

“I wanted my sister back.””

Vanessa looked away.

For the first time, she had no response.

Ethan looked at me.

“The video shows what happened the night before the accident.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

He nodded.

“Vanessa wasn’t supposed to be driving that car.””

A wave of whispers moved through the room.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Ethan.””

“No.””

His voice cut through hers.

“You don’t get to hide behind family anymore.””

Lena stared at the phone.

“What does it show?””

Ethan took a breath.

“The security footage from the restaurant where they left that night.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“You were drinking.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That proves nothing.””

“You argued with Lena.””

“So?””

“You grabbed her keys.””

Silence.

Then Lena whispered:

“You told me I was the reason everyone was unhappy.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“You don’t remember everything.””

“I remember enough.””

Ethan turned the phone around.

“The video shows you forcing her into the passenger seat before driving.””

My hand covered my mouth.

Nobody moved.

The woman I had protected for hitting a wheelchair user had been carrying a secret for years.

But Vanessa wasn’t finished.

She stepped toward Ethan.

“You’re going to destroy your own family over this?””

Ethan looked at Lena.

Then back at Vanessa.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You destroyed it.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.

“You think you’re better than me?””

“No.””

Ethan’s answer was immediate.

“I think Lena is better than both of us.””

That broke something in Vanessa.

She turned toward me.

“You.””

I froze.

“You ruined everything.””

I stared at her.

“No. I stopped you from hurting someone.””

She stepped closer.

“You have no idea what you walked into.””

Maybe she was right.

I was just a waitress.

I didn’t know powerful families.

I didn’t know hidden secrets.

I didn’t know how ugly things could become behind expensive clothes and perfect smiles.

But I knew one thing.

I knew what I saw.

And I knew what I did.

Vanessa opened her mouth to say something else.

Then the ballroom doors suddenly opened.

A man in a gray suit rushed inside.

He looked directly at Ethan.

“Mr. Carter.””

Ethan turned.

“What happened?””

The man held out an envelope.

“It’s from the police.””

Lena’s face went pale.

Ethan took the envelope slowly.

Then he looked at Vanessa.
