Chapter 5: The Witness Nobody Expected

The woman standing in the doorway looked like she wanted to run.

She kept one hand wrapped around her handbag and the other pressed against her chest.

But she stayed.

That alone told me everything.

Whatever she had come to say, it had taken years of fear to finally say it.

Vanessa stared at her.

The color drained from her face.

“You.””

The woman swallowed.

“Yes.””

Ethan walked toward her.

“Mrs. Miller?””

She nodded.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Carter.””

Lena looked confused.

“Who is she?””

The woman looked at Lena.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I worked at the restaurant where you and Vanessa ate that night.””

Lena went still.

The restaurant.

The night of the accident.

Mrs. Miller stepped forward.

“I was the hostess.””

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

“She has nothing important to say.””

Mrs. Miller looked at her.

“You said that three years ago too.””

A wave of whispers moved through the ballroom.

Ethan gestured toward a quiet corner.

“Let’s hear her.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“This is a setup.””

Nobody believed her.

Not anymore.

Mrs. Miller took a deep breath.

“That night, Vanessa arrived upset.””

Lena looked down.

“I remember.””

Mrs. Miller nodded.

“She was arguing with you before you left.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“We had a disagreement.””

“No,” Mrs. Miller said.

“You had an argument.””

The room became silent.

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Be careful.””

Mrs. Miller flinched.

A small reaction.

But everyone saw it.

She was still afraid of Vanessa.

“I heard you tell Lena that you wished she had never come back.””

Lena closed her eyes.

I watched her fingers tighten around the blanket on her wheelchair.

Ethan noticed.

“Lena?””

She shook her head.

“I remember.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You don’t remember anything clearly.””

Lena looked up.

“I remember your voice.””

That sentence broke through every excuse Vanessa had.

Mrs. Miller continued.

“After the argument, I saw Vanessa walk to the driver’s side.””

Ethan nodded.

“And?””

“She was holding something.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What?””

Mrs. Miller looked down.

“A small bottle.””

The room went quiet.

“What bottle?”” Ethan asked.

Mrs. Miller hesitated.

“I don’t know exactly.””

Vanessa laughed.

“That’s convenient.””

Mrs. Miller looked at her.

“It smelled like alcohol.””

Several guests gasped.

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“You were angry,” Mrs. Miller continued.

“You were upset. You told Lena she ruined everything.””

Lena looked like she was struggling to breathe.

Ethan immediately moved beside her.

“Lena.””

“I’m okay.””

But she wasn’t.

Her eyes were fixed on Vanessa.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked away.

The question wasn’t angry.

It was hurt.

“Why would you do that to me?””

For the first time, Vanessa didn’t have an answer.

Then she said something I never expected.

“Because you always got everything.””

Lena blinked.

“What?””

Vanessa laughed quietly.

“You were always the good one.””

Nobody moved.

“You were the daughter everyone loved. The sister everyone protected. The one who could walk into a room and people would notice.””

Lena stared at her.

“So you destroyed my life because you were jealous?””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“I didn’t destroy your life.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“You lied about it.””

Vanessa pointed at him.

“You weren’t there!””

“No.””

His voice was steady.

“But I was there every day afterward.””

He looked at Lena.

“I watched my wife believe she ruined her own future.””

Vanessa looked away.

Mrs. Miller reached into her handbag.

“There’s something else.””

Ethan turned.

“What?””

She pulled out an old phone.

“I recorded a conversation.””

Vanessa froze.

“No.””

Mrs. Miller looked nervous.

“I didn’t mean to. My phone was recording because I was sending a message.””

She unlocked it.

“I heard Vanessa talking to someone outside the restaurant.””

Ethan took the phone.

“What did she say?””

Mrs. Miller looked at Lena.

“She said, ‘If she forgets tonight, everything will be easier.’”

The air disappeared from the room.

Lena covered her mouth.

Ethan’s expression became unreadable.

Vanessa stepped backward.

“That’s impossible.””

Ethan pressed play.

Static filled the speakers.

Then a voice.

Vanessa’s voice.

Clear.

Cold.

“If she forgets tonight, everything will be easier.””

A woman gasped.

Someone whispered:

“Oh my God.””

Vanessa looked around.

The perfect image.

The charity queen.

The generous donor.

The woman everyone admired.

It was gone.

But then Vanessa did something unexpected.

She smiled.

Not a scared smile.

Not a broken smile.

A confident one.

And that scared me more.

Because someone who had just been exposed should look defeated.

Vanessa looked like she had a backup plan.

She slowly reached into her purse.

Ethan noticed.

“What are you doing?””

She pulled out a small envelope.

May you like

Then she looked directly at Lena.

“I guess it’s time you learned what really happened that night.””
