Chapter 9: The Evidence In The Dark
I stared at Daniel.
My uncle.
The man who held my hand at my father’s funeral.
The man who told me everything would be okay.
The man who had just been accused of destroying my family.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Daniel looked at me.
“Ethan.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You’re wrong.””
Michael looked at me with sadness.
“I wish I was.””
Daniel took a step forward.
“Listen to me.””
I backed away.
“Don’t.””
His face changed.
Pain flashed across it.
“I know what you think this looks like.””
“You mean exactly what it looks like?””
“No.””
“Then prove it.””
The challenge hung in the air.
Daniel said nothing.
Michael handed me the flash drive.
“Watch it.””
I looked at the small device.
“So that’s it?””
“What?””
“Fifteen years of lies. My father disappearing. My mother suffering. Me growing up believing everyone was gone.””
I looked at Daniel.
“And now I’m supposed to believe a flash drive?””
Michael lowered his eyes.
“You don’t have to believe me.””
He pointed at the drive.
“But believe the evidence.””
We found an old computer in the warehouse office.
The screen flickered when I plugged in the drive.
There were hundreds of files.
Bank records.
Emails.
Contracts.
Photos.
My hands shook as I opened the first folder.
The documents showed money transfers between companies.
Large amounts.
Millions.
The names were clear.
Robert Parker.
Daniel Bennett.
My father’s company.
I opened another file.
An audio recording.
The date was eight years before my father’s supposed death.
I pressed play.
A man’s voice filled the room.
Daniel’s voice.
“I can’t let him expose us.””
Another voice answered.
Robert Parker.
“He’s too stubborn.””
Daniel replied:
“Then make sure he disappears.””
I stopped the recording.
The room felt like it was spinning.
Daniel looked away.
“That recording is fake.””
Michael laughed bitterly.
“You still use the same excuse.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Is it?””
He didn’t answer.
That hurt more than anything.
I opened another file.
A medical report.
A hospital record.
My father’s name.
Alive.
After the accident.
I covered my mouth.
“He survived.””
Michael nodded.
“Yes.””
“Where was he?””
“Hidden.””
“By you?””
“No.””
Michael looked at Daniel.
“By him.””
Daniel finally lost control.
“Enough!””
His voice echoed through the warehouse.
“You have no idea what I did to keep this family alive!””
I stared at him.
“Family?””
He looked at me.
“Yes.””
“You destroyed mine.””
“No.””
His eyes became desperate.
“I protected you.””
The sentence was so absurd I almost couldn’t respond.
“Protected me?””
“Yes.””
“From what?””
Daniel was silent.
Then he said:
“From your father.””
I froze.
Michael looked shocked.
“What?””
Daniel took a breath.
“You think your father was innocent?””
I stared.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Your father had secrets too.””
I felt anger rising.
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
He looked at me.
“Ask your mother.””
The room went quiet.
Again.
My mother.
Why did everyone keep bringing her into this?
Daniel continued.
“She knew everything.””
“No.””
“She knew why your father left.””
“My father didn’t leave.””
Daniel looked at me.
“He chose to.””
I wanted to hit him.
I wanted to scream.
But before I could respond, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
A woman’s voice spoke.
Soft.
Shaking.
“Ethan?””
My entire body froze.
Because I knew that voice.
I hadn’t heard it in years.
But I would recognize it anywhere.
“Mom?””
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“Ethan, don’t trust Daniel.””
My eyes moved to my uncle.
He looked terrified.
My mother continued:
“I should have told you the truth years ago.””
I gripped the phone.
“Mom, where are you?””
Another pause.
Then her voice broke.
“Ethan…”
“What?””
“I wasn’t the one who buried your father’s secret.””
My heart stopped.
“Then who was?””
The answer came quietly.
May you like
And it changed everything.
“Your father did.””
