Chapter 4: The Letter She Hid
The envelope felt heavier than paper should have felt.
I stared at my name written across the front.
Ethan Bennett.
Not printed.
Not typed.
Handwritten.
The same sharp, uneven handwriting I remembered from chemistry class fifteen years ago.
Michael Parker.
Vanessa watched me hold it.
Her face had lost all color.
“Where did you get this?”” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her eyes moved toward the window.
“I kept it because I didn’t know what else to do.””
I laughed quietly.
“You kept a letter addressed to me for fifteen years and never thought to give it to me?””
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
She looked at me.
“You.””
That surprised me.
“Me?””
“You were the only person who could destroy everything.””
I placed the envelope on the table.
“Open it.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because once you read it, there’s no going back.””
I leaned forward.
“Vanessa, you already took fifteen years from me. Don’t pretend you’re protecting me now.””
The words hit her.
For a moment, she looked like the girl from high school again.
Not the confident bully.
Just a scared teenager who had made a terrible choice.
But I reminded myself of something.
Regret did not erase damage.
She finally pushed the envelope toward me.
“Read it.””
I opened it carefully.
The paper inside was yellowed with age.
The first line made my chest tighten.
*Ethan, if you’re reading this, then Vanessa finally decided she can’t hide what she did anymore.*
I looked up.
Vanessa looked away.
I continued.
*I know you probably hate me. Maybe you should. I made a mistake that changed your life, and I’ve been carrying it ever since.*
My fingers tightened around the paper.
Michael knew.
He knew what Vanessa had done.
The letter continued.
*The scholarship accusation wasn’t the only thing she lied about. She also took something from you. Something you never knew was missing.*
I stopped.
“What does this mean?””
Vanessa remained silent.
I looked back at the letter.
*The night before graduation, I found the original documents. The ones proving Vanessa had lied. I was going to give them to you.*
My heartbeat increased.
The night before graduation.
I remembered that night.
I had been sitting in my mother’s kitchen, staring at my acceptance letter.
I was finally leaving.
Finally escaping.
Then Michael had called me.
He sounded nervous.
He told me he had something important to discuss.
But he never showed up.
The next morning, everyone was talking about something else.
The scholarship issue disappeared.
I assumed it was over.
I was wrong.
*Vanessa found out I had proof. She begged me not to expose her. She said she was afraid everyone would hate her.*
I looked at Vanessa.
“She knew?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.””
“Michael had proof?””
She nodded.
I continued reading.
*She took the documents from me. She promised she would tell Ethan the truth after graduation.*
My jaw tightened.
“But she didn’t.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“No.””
The letter shook slightly in my hand.
*I confronted her years later. She told me Ethan had moved on and that telling him would only hurt everyone again. I didn’t believe her.*
I turned the page.
The next words were different.
Messier.
Like Michael had written them quickly.
*Ethan, I’m sorry I wasn’t brave enough. There’s something else you need to know. Vanessa wasn’t the only person involved.*
I froze.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I don’t know what he wrote after that.””
I kept reading.
*The person who helped her change the evidence was someone close to you. Someone you trusted.*
My stomach dropped.
Someone close to me.
My mother?
No.
Never.
My friends?
Maybe.
But who?
The letter ended suddenly.
There was no signature.
No explanation.
Only one final sentence.
*If anything happens to me, don’t trust the story Vanessa tells you.*
I lowered the letter.
“What happened to Michael?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
“Don’t lie.””
“I swear.””
“You had his name on fake business documents.””
“That was different.””
“How?””
She looked down.
“Because Michael came back.””
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“What?””
“Three months ago.””
My mind struggled to process the words.
“You saw him?””
She nodded slowly.
“He contacted me.””
“Why?””
“Because he needed money.””
I stood.
“And you used his name to steal money from the hotel?””
“No!””
Her voice cracked.
“I was trying to help him.””
I stared at her.
“By committing fraud?””
She covered her face.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Before she could answer, my phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Then the message preview appeared.
One sentence.
*Ethan, stop asking Vanessa questions. Ask me instead.*
My blood ran cold.

Because the sender included a name.
Michael Parker.
