Chapter 11: The Woman Who Knew Everything
We found my mother two hours later.
The location came from the tracking information hidden inside the photo.
A small house outside the city.
Old.
Quiet.
Almost forgotten.
The kind of place someone would choose if they wanted to disappear.
I stood outside the front door, unable to knock.
I had imagined seeing my mother again hundreds of times.
But never like this.
Never because someone had taken her.
Michael stood beside me.
Daniel stayed behind us.
“You ready?”” Michael asked.
I looked at him.
“No.””
He nodded.
“Neither was I when I found your father.””
I opened the door.
“Mom?””
No answer.
I walked inside.
The house smelled like old books and coffee.
Then I heard a voice.
“Ethan?””
I turned.
My mother stood in the hallway.
Older.
Smaller.
But still my mother.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then she ran toward me.
I hugged her.
And all the anger I had carried for years disappeared.
Not completely.
But enough.
“You’re safe,” I whispered.
She held onto me.
“I’m sorry.””
I closed my eyes.
“I know.””
“No.””
She stepped back.
“You don’t.””
Her eyes moved toward Michael.
Then Daniel.
Her expression changed.
“You brought them both.””
“Yes.””
She looked afraid.
“Then it’s time.””
We sat around the small kitchen table.
My mother placed a worn notebook in front of me.
My heart stopped.
“The journal.””
She nodded.
“I found it.””
Michael looked shocked.
“You had it?””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“Your father gave it to me after he realized he couldn’t trust anyone else.””
I stared.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because he made me promise.””
I laughed softly.
“Another promise.””
She looked down.
“He said if the truth came out too early, you would become a target.””
“Target of who?””
She looked at Daniel.
My uncle lowered his eyes.
But my mother didn’t answer.
She opened the journal.
Inside were pages filled with my father’s handwriting.
The first page had one sentence.
*If Ethan ever reads this, I failed to protect him.*
I swallowed.
My mother turned the page.
“The night of the accident, your father was planning to expose Daniel and Robert.””
Daniel spoke.
“I didn’t know.””
My mother looked at him.
“You did.””
The room froze.
Daniel stared at her.
“What?””
“You knew enough.””
His face changed.
My mother continued:
“You weren’t the one who planned everything.””
Michael looked confused.
“Then why blame him?””
“Because he helped cover it.””
Daniel stood.
“No.””
My mother’s voice became stronger.
“You deleted the records.””
“I was trying to protect the company.””
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
Daniel looked broken.
For the first time, he didn’t look like a powerful businessman.
He looked like an old man carrying a terrible weight.
I looked at him.
“Why?””
He didn’t answer.
My mother did.
“Because Daniel made a deal.””
“With who?””
She looked at me.
“Your father.””
The answer shocked everyone.
“My father?””
She nodded.
“Your father knew Daniel was involved. But instead of exposing him, he gave him a chance to fix it.””
Michael whispered:
“That’s why he disappeared.””
My mother nodded.
“He wanted Daniel to help him gather evidence.””
I looked at Daniel.
“And you betrayed him.””
Daniel sat down.
“I was scared.””
The confession was quiet.
“I thought if I cooperated, I could control the damage.””
“And my father?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“He found out I was still working with Robert.””
Silence.
Then Daniel said the words I never expected.
“I tried to save him.””
I stared.
“Did you?””
He didn’t answer.
Because he couldn’t.
My mother opened the final page of the journal.
“There’s one more thing.””
“What?””
She looked at me.
“Your father wrote who ordered everything.””
My hands shook as I turned the page.
The name was there.
Written clearly.
A name I never expected.
A name that made Michael step back.
A name that made Daniel close his eyes.
Because it wasn’t Robert Parker.
It wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t Vanessa.
It was someone who had been standing beside me my entire life.
Someone I trusted completely.
May you like
The name on the page was:
*Evelyn Bennett.*
