Chapter 8: The Family Member Who Lied

Daniel Bennett looked exactly the same.

That was the strangest part.

Fifteen years had passed.

But he still had the same calm smile.

The same expensive suit.

The same reassuring expression he used whenever he told me everything would be okay.

“Ethan.””

His voice carried through the empty warehouse.

“I was hoping we could talk.””

I couldn’t move.

“What are you doing here?””

He smiled sadly.

“Your father had that same look when he discovered the truth.””

My stomach tightened.

“What truth?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Don’t do this.””

“Do what?””

“Pretend you don’t know.””

I laughed.

“You’re the one who brought me here.””

“No.””

He looked around.

“I came because I wanted to stop you from making the same mistake your father made.””

The words sent a chill through me.

“My father trusted you.””

“Yes.””

“And you betrayed him.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You have no idea what happened.””

“Then explain.””

He was quiet.

For a moment, I thought he might actually tell me.

Then he said:

“Your father was reckless.””

I stared.

“Excuse me?””

“He cared more about being right than keeping his family safe.””

I stepped closer.

“You’re blaming him?””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

“No. You’re protecting yourself.””

Daniel sighed.

“You always were stubborn.””

I almost smiled.

That sounded exactly like something he would say.

When I was ten years old, Daniel taught me how to ride a bike.

When I fell, he picked me up.

When my father died, he sat beside me at the funeral.

He had always been the person I trusted.

And now he was standing in front of me like a stranger.

“Where is Michael?””

Daniel’s eyes changed.

Just slightly.

But I noticed.

“You talked to him.””

It wasn’t a question.

“Yes.””

His jaw tightened.

“Then you know too much.””

I reached for my phone.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

“Why?””

“Because some things cannot be undone.””

“Like destroying my father’s life?””

His face changed.

A small crack appeared.

“I didn’t destroy him.””

“Then why did he say your name?””

Silence.

Daniel looked away.

That was the answer.

Suddenly, a noise came from behind a stack of crates.

A voice.

“Ethan.””

I turned.

Michael stepped into the light.

He looked older than the photo.

Tired.

But alive.

Daniel stared at him.

“You shouldn’t have come.””

Michael laughed.

“Neither should you.””

The tension between them was immediate.

I looked between them.

“What is happening?””

Michael looked at me.

“I spent eight years trying to expose him.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

Michael stepped forward.

“I understand exactly.””

Daniel’s expression became angry.

“You think Ethan will forgive you?””

Michael looked down.

“No.””

The answer surprised me.

“I don’t expect forgiveness.””

He looked at me.

“I expect him to know the truth.””

I waited.

Michael took a small flash drive from his pocket.

“This contains everything.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What did you do?””

“Backups.””

Michael smiled.

“You taught me one thing.””

“What?””

“Never trust someone who destroys the evidence.””

Daniel moved toward him.

I stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Both men stopped.

I looked at Daniel.

“What’s on that drive?””

He didn’t answer.

Michael did.

“Financial records.””

I frowned.

“From the company?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Michael looked at Daniel.

“Proof that he didn’t just steal from your father.””

My heart sank.

“What else?””

Michael’s voice became quiet.

“He tried to erase your entire family.””

The warehouse went silent.

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Michael looked at me.

“Ethan, your father wasn’t killed in an accident.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Michael.””

But it was too late.

Michael continued.

“Your father was attacked.””

My hands went cold.

“By who?””

Michael looked directly at Daniel.

May you like

And answered:

“By the same person who ordered me to disappear.””
