Chapter 13: The Last Lie

The room went completely silent.

Robert Parker stood in the doorway with the confidence of someone who had spent years believing he would never be questioned.

My mother looked at him.

Not with fear.

With disappointment.

“Still lying after all these years, Robert?””

His smile faded slightly.

“Evelyn, you always were good at pretending.””

I stepped forward.

“Why are you here?””

Robert looked at me.

The same eyes I had seen in old company photographs.

The same eyes that had been connected to every secret in my life.

“Because you deserve the truth.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I pointed around the room.

“Everyone says they’re giving me the truth while hiding something else.””

Robert nodded.

“Fair.””

He looked at the journal in my hand.

“Your father was a complicated man.””

“My father was murdered.””

Robert’s expression changed.

“No.””

The word was calm.

Too calm.

“He chose his own disappearance.””

My hands tightened.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I expect you to read the evidence.””

He reached into his coat.

Daniel immediately moved.

“Don’t.””

Robert smiled.

“Still protecting him after everything?””

Daniel froze.

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Robert placed a folder on the table.

“I brought this because I knew eventually you would find out.””

My mother stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Robert looked at her.

“Why? Because I know what you did?””

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

“What did she do?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

Robert opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Bank records.

Emails.

Photos.

Again.

More evidence.

More secrets.

But one document stopped me.

A signed agreement.

Between my father and my mother.

My father’s signature.

My mother’s signature.

“What is this?””

Robert looked at me.

“Your father planned to disappear.””

I stared.

“No.””

“He knew exposing us would put you in danger.””

My mother whispered:

“Ethan…”

I looked at her.

“Is this real?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Robert continued.

“Your father wanted your mother to tell everyone he died.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

“Because he knew someone close to him was working with us.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then at my mother.

“Who?””

Robert smiled.

“That’s the question, isn’t it?””

I grabbed the document.

“Explain.””

My mother finally spoke.

“Your father discovered Robert’s crimes.””

Robert nodded.

“True.””

“He discovered Daniel’s involvement.””

Daniel looked down.

“Also true.””

My mother continued.

“But he discovered something worse.””

I waited.

“What?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He discovered I had been secretly working with him.””

I froze.

“What?””

My mother shook her head.

“Not against your father.””

She looked at Robert.

“Against you.””

Robert’s smile disappeared.

The room changed.

Because for the first time, he looked nervous.

My mother continued:

“Your father and I created a plan. We knew Robert would come after him.””

Robert stepped forward.

“Evelyn.””

She ignored him.

“We needed everyone to believe my husband was gone.””

Michael looked shocked.

“So the accident…”

“Was staged.””

I stared.

“My whole life…”

My mother looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I stepped back.

The pain wasn’t that my father survived.

The pain was realizing everyone had chosen a lie over me.

“I spent fifteen years grieving him.””

“I know.””

“You let me.””

“I had no choice.””

“There is always a choice.””

The words hurt her.

But they were true.

Robert suddenly laughed.

“You see?””

Everyone looked at him.

“This is what I warned your father about.””

“What?””

“Ethan, your father trusted emotions too much.””

He pointed at my mother.

“She thought she could control the situation.””

Then he looked at Daniel.

“He thought he could fix his mistakes.””

Finally, he looked at Michael.

“He thought he could expose me.””

Robert smiled.

“But none of them understood one thing.””

“What?””

He stepped closer.

“I was never the most dangerous person in this story.””

The lights flickered.

A sound came from outside.

Multiple cars.

Doors closing.

My stomach tightened.

Robert looked toward the window.

“They’re here.””

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“The people your father was afraid of.””

The front door opened.

And the person who walked in made everyone freeze.

Because I knew him.

I had seen his face every day growing up.

The man who taught me how to work hard.

The man who told me family was everything.

My uncle Daniel’s older brother.

My father’s closest friend.

But he was supposed to be dead.

My father walked into the room.
