Chapter 12: The Mother’s Impossible Choice

I stared at the name.

Evelyn Bennett.

My mother.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The room felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

I looked at the woman sitting across from me.

The woman who packed my lunches.

The woman who stayed awake when I had nightmares.

The woman who worked two jobs so I could chase my dreams.

The woman who just became the biggest mystery of my life.

“No.””

My voice was barely audible.

My mother closed her eyes.

“I knew this day would come.””

Michael looked at her.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“I knew Ethan would eventually find the journal.””

I stood.

“Explain.””

She didn’t move.

“I didn’t order what happened to your father.””

“Then why is your name there?””

“Because your father wanted you to ask that question.””

I froze.

“What?””

She touched the journal.

I looked down.

The next page had my father’s handwriting.

*Evelyn did not betray me. But she made a choice that changed everything.*

I looked up.

My mother whispered:

“He knew.””

I read further.

*My wife discovered the truth about Daniel and Robert before I did. She confronted them. She tried to protect Ethan. But in doing so, she made a mistake.*

My fingers moved across the paper.

*She trusted the wrong person.*

I looked at my mother.

“Who?””

She looked away.

“I trusted Daniel.””

Everyone became silent.

Daniel looked shocked.

“You?””

My mother nodded.

“I thought you were trying to help.””

“I was.””

“No.””

Her voice was calm.

“You were trying to clean up your own mess.””

Daniel looked down.

My mother continued:

“After your father disappeared, I knew someone was watching us.””

“Who?””

“Robert.””

Michael’s expression changed.

“He was still alive?””

“Yes.””

I looked confused.

“But Robert Parker was reported dead three years ago.””

My mother nodded.

“Another lie.””

Everything connected.

The fake deaths.

The hidden identities.

The missing evidence.

Everyone had been pretending to disappear.

My mother looked at me.

“Your father wanted me to leave with you.””

“Then why didn’t we?””

“Because I was waiting.””

“For what?””

“For Daniel to keep his promise.””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“What promise?””

My mother answered:

“He promised he would expose Robert.””

Daniel whispered:

“I tried.””

She looked at him.

“Not hard enough.””

A knock interrupted the room.

Everyone froze.

Michael immediately stood.

“Who knows we’re here?””

Nobody answered.

The knock came again.

Louder.

My mother grabbed my hand.

“Ethan, listen to me.””

“What?””

“If that door opens, don’t believe the first thing you hear.””

The handle moved.

Slowly.

Daniel stepped in front of us.

The door opened.

A man stood outside.

Older.

Gray hair.

A familiar face.

I knew him.

Everyone did.

Because his picture had been on the news for years.

The man who supposedly died.

The man who started this entire nightmare.

Robert Parker.

He smiled.

“Hello, Ethan.””

Nobody moved.

Robert looked past me.

At my mother.

Then at Daniel.

“Looks like the family reunion happened without me.””

Michael whispered:

“You’re alive.””

Robert smiled.

“I’ve been alive the whole time.””

My heart pounded.

Then he looked at me.

“Your father told you a lot of things.””

I said nothing.

Robert took one step inside.

“But he never told you the most important one.””

“What?””

His smile faded.

“The night your father disappeared…”

May you like

He looked directly at my mother.

“She was the one who called me.””
