Chapter 9: The Woman Who Knew The Truth
Nobody moved.
The courtroom felt frozen.
Mark stared at Anna like he had seen a ghost.
“Why are you here?””
Anna laughed quietly.
“Because you finally made the mistake I was waiting for.””
His expression hardened.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“No?””
She opened the folder.
“Then let’s talk about Emily.””
The judge looked between them.
“Who is Emily?””
Anna stepped forward.
“Emily Carter was my sister.””
She looked at Mark.
“She was also the woman this man abandoned after she became pregnant.””
Whispers spread across the courtroom.
Mark shook his head.
“That’s irrelevant.””
“No,” Anna said.
“It’s the reason we’re here.””
She handed documents to the clerk.
“These are the original hospital records.””
The judge examined them.
Anna continued.
“Mark has spent years telling people he was searching for his daughter.””
She looked at me.
“But he never told anyone why Emily was afraid of him.””
My heart tightened.
“Afraid?””
Anna nodded.
“Emily discovered Mark had been taking money from their company.””
Mark’s face changed.
“That’s a lie.””
“She found proof.””
Anna opened another file.
“She planned to report him.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Mark.
Suddenly everything made sense.
The obsession.
The control.
The fear of losing everything.
This was never about Lily.
It was about hiding the past.
Anna continued.
“Emily was going to expose him.””
The judge asked:
“And what happened to Ms. Carter?””
Anna looked down.
“She died before she could.””
Mark’s attorney stood.
“Your Honor, these accusations are unproven.””
Anna nodded.
“That’s why I brought this.””
She placed a small device on the table.
“A backup drive recovered from Emily’s apartment.””
The judge looked at it.
“What is on it?””
Anna looked at Mark.
“Everything.””
Mark stood suddenly.
“You can’t do this.””
The judge slammed the gavel.
“Mr. Anderson, sit down.””
He did.
But his confidence was gone.
The evidence was played.
Emily’s voice filled the courtroom.
“I don’t know if anyone will hear this.””
My heart broke.
Her voice sounded scared.
“But if something happens to me, Mark knows why.””
Mark closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
“He wants the baby. Not because he loves her.””
A pause.
“Because he thinks she can protect him.””
I looked at Lily.
My daughter.
The child he used as a shield.
Emily’s voice continued:
“He told me he would take my daughter away.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
The judge looked at Mark.
“Is there more?””
Anna nodded.
“There is.””
She pulled out another document.
“A financial agreement.””
The judge read it.
Then his expression changed.
“What is this?””
Anna answered:
“An agreement Mark made with his mother.””
My stomach dropped.
“His mother?””
Anna nodded.
“They planned to use Lily’s identity to gain access to a trust fund.””
The courtroom went silent again.
I looked at Mark.
“The child was never the goal.””
He looked away.
For the first time, he looked small.
The judge ordered a recess.
Everyone stood.
As I walked out, Mark passed by me.
He stopped.
“You think you won.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
He smiled faintly.
“You still don’t understand.””
I felt a chill.
“What don’t I understand?””
He leaned closer.
“Lily’s real story hasn’t even been revealed yet.””
Then he walked away.
And before the courtroom doors closed, I saw what was in his hand.
A final document.
May you like
One that had my name on it.
And a date from the day Lily was born.
