Chapter 1: The Night My Family Broke
“KEEP YOUR DIRTY HANDS OFF THE TURKEY!””
The scream cut through our Thanksgiving dinner before the sound of the slap even reached my ears.
My five-year-old daughter Lily stumbled backward, one tiny hand flying to her cheek. The room went silent except for the ticking clock above my mother-in-law’s fireplace.
A red mark slowly appeared on my daughter’s face.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then I saw who had done it.
My sister-in-law Megan stood beside the dining table, her fingers still slightly raised, her expression cold and annoyed.
“I told you to wait,” Megan snapped.
“You don’t just grab food before everyone is served.””
Lily’s lower lip trembled.
“Mommy…” she whispered.
“I was just hungry.””
That sentence shattered something inside me.
I pushed my chair back so hard it scraped against the floor.
“Did you just hit my daughter?””
Megan looked at me like I was the unreasonable one.
“Chloe, don’t make this dramatic.””
“Dramatic?”” I stared at Lily’s cheek.
“You slapped a five-year-old child.””
Megan crossed her arms.
“Someone has to teach her manners.””
I turned immediately toward my husband.
Mark.
The man I had married eight years earlier. The man who had promised me, during our wedding vows, that our family would always come first.
“Mark,” I said, my voice shaking.
“Your sister just hit Lily.””
I waited.
I expected him to stand.
I expected him to tell Megan she had crossed a line.
Instead, he took another bite of turkey.
“Chloe,” he sighed.
“Don’t ruin Thanksgiving.””
I felt like the air had disappeared from the room.
“Excuse me?””
His mother, Linda, placed her wineglass down.
“Megan was only correcting her behavior.””
I looked around the table.
Everyone was watching me.
Nobody was looking at Lily.
Nobody was asking if she was okay.
“Megan hit my child,” I repeated.
Linda shook her head.
“You always overreact.””
Lily grabbed my sweater.
“Mommy, can we go home?””
That tiny voice broke my heart.
Before I could answer, Megan laughed softly.
“She’s learned exactly how to get attention.””
I walked toward her.
I don’t remember making the decision.
I only remember seeing my daughter’s frightened face.
Then my hand moved.
SMACK.
Megan stumbled sideways.
The room exploded.
“You hit me?”” she screamed.
I stood there, breathing hard.
“You touched my child.””
Before she could say anything else, I slapped her again.
“Don’t you ever touch Lily again.””
Mark jumped from his chair.
“What the hell is wrong with you?””
I turned toward him.
“She hurt our daughter!””
He grabbed my arm.
“Apologize to Megan. Now.””
I stared at him.
The man standing in front of me looked familiar, but I suddenly felt like I didn’t know him at all.
“You want me to apologize?””
“Yes.””
“For defending Lily?””
“For attacking my sister.””
Megan covered her cheek and started crying.
But I saw it.
A tiny smile she tried to hide when she looked at Linda.
They had wanted this.
I didn’t know why.
But they wanted me angry.
Linda stood and pointed toward the front door.
“Take your daughter and leave my house.””
I looked at Mark one final time.
“Are you coming with us?””
He picked up his wineglass.
“Take Lily home, Chloe. I’ll come later.””
I carried my crying daughter outside into the freezing Chicago night.
The cold air hit my face, but I barely felt it.
Inside the car, Lily sat quietly in her booster seat.
After several minutes, she whispered:
“Mommy?””
I looked back.
“Yes, baby?””
“Daddy didn’t come because I’m bad… right?””
My heart cracked.
I reached behind the seat and held her hand.
“No. Never. You did nothing wrong.””
She looked down.
Then she said something that made my stomach twist.
“Aunt Megan told Grandma Daddy would be mad at you tonight.””
I froze.
“When did she say that?””
“In the kitchen before dinner.””
My hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“What did they say?””
Lily wiped her eyes.
“They were laughing.””
I drove straight home, but I didn’t go inside.
Instead, I called the only person I trusted.
My sister Zoe.
She answered immediately.
“Chloe? What happened?””
My voice broke.
“Megan hit Lily.””
There was silence.
Then Zoe asked:
“Where is Mark?””
“He stayed.””
Another pause.
“Chloe, listen to me carefully. Don’t go home.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“I’m coming to get you.””
“Why?””
Her voice became quieter.
“Because I found something on Mark’s old tablet.””
“What kind of something?””
“The recording he begged me to delete.””
My phone buzzed.
A video file appeared.
I pressed play.
At first, all I heard was background noise.
Then Mark’s voice.
“Do you think she’ll actually lose control?””
My blood turned cold.
Megan answered.
“She’s emotional. She always is.””
The video showed my husband sitting at Linda’s kitchen table beside Megan.
Megan whispered:
“What if Chloe doesn’t explode?””
Mark leaned back.
“Then make her.””
I stopped breathing.
Zoe’s voice came through the phone.
“Chloe…”
I kept watching.
Linda placed a folder on the table.
“Once she leaves with Lily, we can finally use these.””
Megan opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Bank statements.
Documents.
My documents.
Then Mark said something that made my entire body go numb.
“She still thinks this is about Thanksgiving.””
May you like
He smiled.
“She has no idea what’s happening on Monday.””
