Chapter 8: The Hearing

The courthouse was colder than I expected.

Maybe because of the marble floors.

Maybe because of the way everyone looked at me.

Like they had already decided who I was.

The hearing was scheduled for nine.

At 8:45, Mark walked in.

Wearing a suit.

Holding a folder.

Looking like the perfect father.

That was the thing that hurt the most.

He looked normal.

People passing by saw a husband walking into court.

They didn’t see the man who recorded conversations.

The man who planned my breakdown.

The man who tried to rewrite my daughter’s life.

His attorney whispered something to him.

Mark looked at me.

Then smiled.

A small smile.

The same one from the Thanksgiving video.

Zoe noticed.

“He’s confident.””

I nodded.

“He thinks he already won.””

The courtroom doors opened.

We walked inside.

Mark sat across from me.

The judge entered.

Everyone stood.

The first thing Mark’s attorney did was introduce evidence.

Photos.

The Thanksgiving recording.

The police report from Megan’s complaint.

My anger.

My reaction.

Everything they wanted people to see.

The attorney stood.

“Your Honor, my client is seeking emergency custody because the child’s mother has displayed violent and unstable behavior.””

I looked at Mark.

He didn’t look at me.

The judge looked through the papers.

“Mrs. Anderson, do you deny striking Ms. Megan Anderson?””

“No.””

The room shifted.

The attorney smiled slightly.

I continued:

“But I deny that it happened without reason.””

The judge nodded.

“Explain.””

I looked at my daughter sitting with Zoe outside the courtroom.

Then I spoke.

“She hit my five-year-old daughter.””

Mark’s attorney immediately interrupted.

“Your Honor, this is irrelevant to the issue of custody.””

“No,” I said.

My voice shook.

“But their plan depends on everyone ignoring that part.””

The judge looked at me.

“What plan?””

For the first time, Mark looked nervous.

His attorney stood.

“Your Honor—”

I pulled out my evidence.

The recordings.

The documents.

The original birth records.

Zoe handed everything to the court clerk.

Mark’s face changed.

“You can’t use stolen property.””

I turned toward him.

“You mean the recording where you planned to destroy my life?””

The courtroom went silent.

The judge reviewed the first audio file.

A few minutes later, the expression on his face changed.

The recording played.

Megan’s voice.

“Make her lose control.””

Then Mark:

“She always does.””

The judge stopped the audio.

He looked at Mark.

“Mr. Anderson, explain this.””

Mark’s attorney quickly stood.

“Context matters.””

The judge looked annoyed.

“Then provide context.””

Nobody spoke.

The next piece of evidence was the altered birth certificate.

The judge examined it.

Then looked at Mark.

“Did you authorize this change?””

Mark hesitated.

That hesitation said everything.

“I was trying to protect my daughter.””

The judge frowned.

“By changing official records?””

“I was correcting an injustice.””

I stared at him.

“You stole my daughter’s identity.””

Mark looked at me.

“No.””

His voice softened.

“You stole mine.””

The words shocked everyone.

The judge leaned forward.

“Mr. Anderson, what exactly are you claiming?””

Mark looked at me.

Then said:

“That child was never supposed to be hers.””

My heart stopped.

The courtroom doors opened.

A woman walked in.

Everyone turned.

I didn’t recognize her.

But Mark did.

His face lost all color.

The woman held a folder.

And she said:

“Your Honor, I have evidence that Mr. Anderson has been lying for seven years.””

Mark stood.

“Emily?””

The woman looked at him.

“No.””

She walked closer.

“My name is Anna Carter.””

Rachel gasped.

I looked at her.

“Who is that?””

Rachel whispered:

“She’s Emily’s sister.””

Anna placed the folder on the judge’s desk.

Then looked directly at Mark.

“You’re not trying to find Emily’s daughter.””

May you like

She paused.

“You’re trying to hide what you did to her.””
