Chapter 12: The Truth I Was Never Told

I watched the video until it ended.

Then I watched it again.

And again.

Every time, the same feeling grew inside me.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Betrayal.

The hospital room.

The day Lily was born.

The happiest day of my life.

Mark had been recording it.

Not to remember.

To use.

Zoe closed the laptop.

“Chloe, don’t watch it alone.””

But I couldn’t look away.

“He knew.””

She nodded.

“He knew everything.””

I remembered that day.

The exhaustion.

The pain.

The overwhelming love.

I remembered Mark holding my hand.

Telling me:

“We’re a family now.””

I believed him.

I built my entire life around those words.

Then I heard the rest of the recording.

The part I hadn’t noticed.

After I fell asleep, Mark was still filming.

The camera moved.

A nurse entered.

She handed him a folder.

“Are you sure about this?””

Mark answered:

“She can never know.””

The nurse looked nervous.

“And the other mother?””

Mark said:

“She’ll disappear from the story.””

I covered my mouth.

The video ended.

Anna looked devastated.

“He arranged everything.””

I nodded.

“But why?””

Nobody answered.

Then Rachel spoke.

“Because Emily wasn’t the only person who could expose him.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel pulled out a document.

“I found this in the storage unit.””

The paper was old.

A legal agreement.

Between Mark and Linda.

I read the first paragraph.

“Temporary guardianship arrangement.””

My eyes widened.

“This isn’t about custody.””

“No,” Rachel said.

“It never was.””

I kept reading.

The agreement explained that Mark had planned to place Lily with me after Emily’s death.

But there was a condition.

A condition that made my blood run cold.

“Upon successful transfer of parental responsibility, all financial assets connected to the child shall remain under control of Mark Anderson.””

Zoe whispered:

“He was using you.””

Not just me.

Lily.

Emily.

Everyone.

Mark wanted the child.

Not because she was his daughter.

Because she was valuable.

My phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

Mark.

I answered.

“You sent the video.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“To show you the truth.””

I almost laughed.

“You wouldn’t know the truth if it hit you.””

He ignored that.

“You need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Lily’s future depends on you making the right choice.””

I frowned.

“What choice?””

“Withdraw your custody claim.””

I froze.

“You’re threatening me.””

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“I’m warning you.””

“You’re afraid.””

“No.””

A pause.

“I’m protecting Lily.””

I looked at the phone.

“You don’t even know what protection means.””

His voice dropped.

“Then ask yourself why Emily left a letter for you.””

I went silent.

“How did you know about that?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Because I wrote the ending.””

The call ended.

I stared at the screen.

Zoe looked at me.

“What did he mean?””

I didn’t answer.

Because something had just clicked.

The letter.

The documents.

The recordings.

Everything.

Mark wasn’t just hiding the truth.

He was controlling when the truth appeared.

And why.

Anna suddenly stood.

“Wait.””

She grabbed Emily’s notebook.

“What?””

She flipped through the pages quickly.

Then stopped.

“There’s a final entry.””

She handed it to me.

The handwriting was shaky.

“Mark thinks he has won.””

I read slowly.

“But he doesn’t know I made a copy.””

My heart raced.

The next line was underlined.

“The real proof is not about Lily.””

I turned the page.

There was only one sentence.

“It's about the night Mark made sure I never came home.””

The room went silent.

Then Zoe whispered:

“Chloe…”

I looked at the final page.

At the bottom was a name.

A witness.

Someone who had seen everything.

Someone Mark thought was gone forever.

And beneath the name was a note:

“Find him before Mark does.””
