Chapter 14: The Final Recording

The police secured Thomas’s house.

But I barely noticed.

All I could see was the flash drive sitting inside an evidence bag.

The truth was right there.

Seven years of lies.

Seven years of manipulation.

Seven years of wondering why my husband felt like a stranger.

The answer was finally waiting.

At midnight, the detective assigned to the case allowed us to review the contents.

The flash drive contained one file.

Emily_Carter_Final_Message.

I clicked play.

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then Emily appeared on screen.

She looked tired.

Scared.

But alive.

“If you’re watching this, something happened to me.””

Anna covered her mouth.

Emily continued.

“I don’t know who will find this. I don’t know if I’ll be believed.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“But Mark cannot be trusted.””

My heart tightened.

The video continued.

“Mark thinks people are tools.””

A pause.

“He thinks he can rewrite anyone’s story.””

Emily held up documents.

“He changed records. He moved money. He created lies.””

Then she said the sentence that made everyone silent.

“And he planned to use a child to erase everything.””

I looked at Lily’s picture on my phone.

Emily continued.

“When I found out I was pregnant, Mark was happy.””

Her expression changed.

“Not because he loved me.””

The room was silent.

“He was happy because he thought a child would protect him.””

She explained everything.

The company fraud.

The stolen money.

The fake documents.

The hospital records.

But then came the part nobody expected.

Emily looked down.

“There is one thing Mark doesn’t know.””

She took a breath.

“Lily was never his only connection to the truth.””

I leaned closer.

“What?””

Emily continued.

“Mark’s mother helped him change the records.””

Everyone looked at each other.

“She also helped him hide another secret.””

The video paused briefly.

Then Emily said:

“Mark has another child.””

My heart stopped.

Another child.

The room exploded with questions.

But Emily continued.

“A child he abandoned before he met me.””

I looked at Rachel.

She shook her head.

“I didn’t know.””

Emily showed a document.

“A woman named Claire.””

Then the video ended.

Nobody spoke.

The detective looked at us.

“We need to find Claire.””

But I was thinking about something else.

Mark had spent years searching for Lily.

But maybe Lily wasn’t the first child he lost.

Maybe she was just the latest person he wanted to control.

The next morning, we found Claire.

She lived two hours outside the city.

When she opened the door, she saw my face.

And immediately knew why we were there.

“You’re Chloe.””

I froze.

“How do you know me?””

Claire looked exhausted.

“Because Mark told me about you.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did he say?””

“That you were temporary.””

The word cut deep.

Claire invited us inside.

On her wall were old photographs.

One was of a little boy.

“Your son?””

She nodded.

“Ethan.””

“What happened?””

Claire looked at the picture.

“Mark left when Ethan was three.””

“Why?””

“Because he found out Ethan had a medical condition.””

I felt sick.

“He abandoned him?””

Claire nodded.

“He said he didn’t want a burden.””

Silence.

Then Claire looked at me.

“Mark doesn’t love children.””

She swallowed.

“He loves what children can give him.””

That was the truth.

The final piece.

When we returned to the courthouse, Mark was waiting.

But he wasn’t smiling anymore.

He looked angry.

Desperate.

“You found Claire.””

I stared at him.

“You left your own son.””

His face changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

The judge entered.

The hearing resumed.

But before anyone spoke, Mark stood.

“I want to make a deal.””

Everyone looked shocked.

The judge frowned.

“Mr. Anderson?””

Mark looked directly at me.

“You want the truth?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

He took a breath.

“Then I’ll tell you everything.””

The courtroom went silent.

Then he said:

“But first, I need you to understand one thing.””

May you like

He looked at Lily.

“She was never supposed to survive.””
