Chapter 9: The Secret From Ten Years Ago
I stared at the photograph for almost a minute before I could move.
Vanessa was sitting at a restaurant.
Across from her was a man.
A man I knew.
Not well.
But enough.
His name was Robert.
He had been my business partner ten years ago.
The same man who disappeared from my life after our company collapsed.
The same man I blamed for losing everything.
My hands tightened around the photo.
No.
That couldn’t be possible.
I flipped it over again.
The message remained.
*Ask her what happened ten years ago.*
I didn’t sleep that night.
Every memory I had of my marriage felt different.
Every conversation.
Every argument.
Every moment I thought I understood.
The next morning, I called Vanessa.
She answered after three rings.
“Daniel?””
Her voice sounded tired.
“We need to talk.””
A pause.
“About what?””
“Robert.””
Silence.
A long silence.
That was enough.
“Where did you get that name?””
I looked out the window.
“Where were you ten years ago?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Finally, she whispered:
“Who gave you that?””
“That’s not the question.””
Another pause.
Then she said:
“I knew this day would come.””
My heart dropped.
“What does that mean?””
“Meet me.””
“No.””
“Daniel, if you want the truth, you need to hear it from me.””
I almost refused.
But I needed answers.
We met at a quiet coffee shop.
Vanessa looked different.
Older.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like the confidence she always carried had disappeared.
She sat across from me.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.””
“That’s what people say when they’re caught.””
She looked down.
“You think I’m a monster.””
“I think you’ve been lying to me for years.””
She nodded.
“I have.””
The admission surprised me.
“What happened with Robert?””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“Your company didn’t fail because he stole from you.””
My face went still.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“Robert took the blame.””
I couldn’t speak.
“Why?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I asked him to.””
The world seemed to stop.
“You asked him?””
She nodded.
“Ten years ago, we were drowning financially. You were working nonstop. You were trying to save everything.””
I stared at her.
“And?””
“And I panicked.””
“So you destroyed my company?””
“No.””
She shook her head quickly.
“I moved money.””
My chest tightened.
“How much?””
She looked away.
“Enough to keep us alive.””
I stood up slightly.
“Where did it go?””
She didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“Vanessa.””
Her voice became a whisper.
“I invested it.””
“In what?””
She looked at me.
“Emily’s future.””
I almost laughed.
But there was nothing funny.
“You stole from me and called it protecting our daughter?””
“I was trying to build something for her.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to control everything.””
Her eyes filled.
“I made mistakes.””
“Ten years of mistakes?””
She looked down.
Then she said the one thing I never expected.
“The money wasn’t the worst part.””
I froze.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“Robert didn’t leave because of the company.””
I stared at her.
“Then why did he leave?””
Vanessa looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw genuine fear.
“Because he found out what I did.””
“What did you do?””
She opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message appeared.
From Robert.
A number I hadn’t saved.
May you like
The message contained only one sentence.
*“Daniel, your wife never told you why Emily really came home.””*
