Chapter 3: The Secret Emily Carried

The name on the screen was unfamiliar.

*Marcus.*

Emily stared at it like she had just seen a ghost.

“Who is Marcus?”” I asked.

She locked her phone.

“Dad…”

“Who is he?””

Vanessa stood near the doorway, watching.

And I hated that expression on her face.

It wasn’t concern.

It was satisfaction.

Like she knew something I didn’t.

Emily slowly sat down.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

My heart sank.

“Find out what?””

She looked at her mother.

Then at me.

“After college, I moved in with someone.””

Vanessa immediately spoke.

“Someone who ruined her life.””

“Vanessa.””

Emily shook her head.

“No. I need to say it.””

She took a breath.

“I was engaged.””

The room became completely still.

I felt like the floor had shifted beneath me.

“You were engaged?””

She nodded.

“His name was Marcus.””

“Why didn’t I know?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Mom told me not to tell you.””

I turned slowly toward Vanessa.

“What?””

Vanessa didn’t look surprised.

“I was protecting you.””

“Protecting me from what?””

“From disappointment.””

Emily stood up.

“No, Mom. You were protecting yourself.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“Careful.””

Emily flinched.

That tiny movement told me everything.

How many times had she heard that tone?

“How long did this go on?”” I asked.

Emily looked down.

“Almost a year.””

I sat back in my chair.

A year.

My daughter had been engaged for a year, living a completely separate life, and somehow I knew nothing.

“What happened with Marcus?””

Emily looked at her phone.

“He left.””

“Why?””

She hesitated.

“Because I found out he was cheating.””

The anger I felt toward an unknown man was immediate.

But then Emily continued.

“And when I came home, Mom told me I couldn’t just move back in without contributing.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“She came home crying,” Vanessa said.

“I told her she needed to grow up.””

Emily laughed quietly.

But there was no happiness in it.

“You told me I was embarrassing you.””

Vanessa didn’t deny it.

“You were acting helpless.””

“No,” Emily said.

“I was hurt.””

The room fell silent.

I remembered the night Emily came home.

I remembered seeing her suitcase by the front door.

I remembered Vanessa saying, “She just needs some time.””

I thought my wife had been helping our daughter heal.

I never imagined she had been making her feel smaller.

I stood.

“Emily, why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked at me.

“Because every time I tried, Mom reminded me that you would get angry.””

“I would have listened.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“That’s why I was scared.””

I closed my eyes.

The sentence hurt because it was true.

I had spent years thinking I was the safe place in my daughter’s life.

But somehow, she had learned to suffer quietly instead.

Vanessa picked up her purse again.

“This family is falling apart because you’re letting Emily manipulate you.””

I turned.

“Manipulate me?””

“Yes.””

Emily shook her head.

“I didn’t want money. I didn’t want revenge. I just wanted Dad to know the truth.””

Vanessa laughed.

“The truth?””

She stepped closer.

“Then tell him everything.””

Emily froze.

I noticed.

“Everything about what?””

No one answered.

Vanessa looked at Emily.

Emily looked at the floor.

My chest tightened.

“Emily.””

She reached into her bag again.

This time, she pulled out an envelope.

“I didn’t know if I should show you this.””

“What is it?””

Her hands trembled as she placed it on the table.

“It’s from Marcus.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The first line made my blood run cold.

Because it wasn’t an apology.

It was a warning.

May you like

And it began with:

*“Daniel, you need to know what Vanessa did before I left.””*
