Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew Too Much

The man standing at my front door looked exhausted.

He wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t threatening.

He looked like someone who had been carrying a burden for too long.

His eyes moved from me to Emily.

Then to Vanessa.

“Is Daniel here?””

I stepped forward.

“I’m Daniel.””

He nodded slowly.

“My name is Marcus.””

The air disappeared from the room.

Emily covered her mouth.

Vanessa immediately stepped between us.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I should have come a long time ago.””

I looked at Emily.

She was frozen.

“Dad…”

I turned back to Marcus.

“Why are you here?””

He held up the folder.

“Because there are things you need to know.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Are you still going to pretend?””

That sentence hit differently.

Because Vanessa didn’t respond.

She looked away.

I opened the door wider.

“Come inside.””

Vanessa immediately said, “Daniel, no.””

I ignored her.

Marcus walked in.

He placed the folder on the table.

The same table where my daughter had counted money.

The same table where I discovered the truth.

“I’m not here to ask Emily to take me back,” Marcus said.

Emily looked surprised.

“Then why?””

He looked at her.

“Because you deserved to know what really happened.””

I crossed my arms.

“Start talking.””

Marcus opened the folder.

Inside were printed emails.

Screenshots.

Documents.

“I made mistakes,” he said.

“I cheated. I hurt Emily. I’m not denying that.””

Emily looked down.

“But after I left, Vanessa contacted me.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Here we go again.””

Marcus looked at me.

“She offered to help me.””

I frowned.

“Help you?””

“She told me Emily was ruining my future.””

Emily went pale.

“She said that?””

Marcus nodded.

“She told me Emily was too dependent. Too emotional. That you had protected her too much.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She didn’t deny it.

Marcus continued.

“She convinced me that leaving was the right thing.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You listened to her?””

“Yes.””

He looked ashamed.

“I was selfish. I wanted someone to tell me I wasn’t the bad guy.””

Silence.

Then Marcus opened another document.

“But this is why I came.””

He pushed it toward me.

I read the heading.

A bank transfer record.

My name was on it.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Marcus took a breath.

“Vanessa paid me.””

The room went completely silent.

Emily whispered:

“What?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Don’t.””

Marcus continued.

“She sent money to help me move away.””

I stared at the document.

The date.

The amount.

Everything.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Because she wanted Emily to stop looking for answers.””

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

My wife hadn’t just controlled what happened inside our home.

She had reached outside it.

She had shaped my daughter’s life from every direction.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

I looked at her.

“Did you pay him?””

She said nothing.

That silence was the answer.

Emily started crying.

“Mom…”

Vanessa finally broke.

“I was trying to help you.””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“You were trying to control me.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus reached into the folder one more time.

“There’s one more thing.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then he pulled out a document.

“It’s about the house.””

My heart stopped.

“The house?””

He nodded.

“Vanessa made a decision months ago.””

He placed the paper on the table.

I picked it up.

The first line made my blood run cold.

*Property transfer agreement.*

And beneath it was a name I never expected to see.

Not mine.

Not Vanessa’s.

Emily’s.

May you like

But the signature at the bottom was already there.

And it wasn’t my daughter’s.
