Chapter 10: The Truth Behind Emily’s Return

I stared at the message on my phone until the words blurred.

*Daniel, your wife never told you why Emily really came home.*

My first instinct was anger.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Anger.

Because every person who had ever entered this story seemed to know something about my daughter’s life except me.

I looked at Vanessa.

She had seen my expression change.

“Who was that?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

I turned the phone toward her.

The color drained from her face.

“Robert.””

Her voice was barely audible.

“What did he say?””

I stood up.

“Why don’t you ask him yourself?””

Vanessa grabbed her purse.

“Daniel, please.””

“Please what?””

She looked around the coffee shop.

People were laughing nearby. A couple was sharing a pastry. A man was typing on his laptop.

A normal morning.

A normal world.

Except mine had collapsed piece by piece.

“Tell me the truth.””

She closed her eyes.

“I was trying to protect Emily.””

I almost laughed.

“That’s your answer for everything.””

She looked hurt.

But I didn’t care anymore.

“Protecting her meant taking money from me?””

“No.””

“Making her pay you rent?””

“No.””

“Destroying her relationship?””

Her silence answered.

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to use that word anymore.””

“What word?””

“Protect.””

Vanessa looked down.

Then she whispered:

“Emily didn’t just come home because Marcus cheated.””

I sat back down.

“Then why?””

She took a long breath.

“Because she found out something.””

“What?””

“She found out about the money.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“What money?””

Vanessa’s fingers tightened around her cup.

“The money from ten years ago.””

I stared at her.

“Emily knew?””

“She found documents.””

“What documents?””

“She was helping me organize old files.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“And she saw what you did.””

Vanessa nodded.

“She found the transfers.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“So when she came home…”

“She wasn’t just heartbroken.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She was scared.””

“Scared of you?””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Yes.””

That one word hurt more than everything else.

My wife looked down.

“She confronted me.””

“What did you do?””

“I told her she didn’t understand.””

“Of course you did.””

She ignored the comment.

“I told her that sometimes adults make impossible choices.””

“And she believed you?””

“No.””

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“She told me she was going to tell you.””

I felt cold.

“What did you say?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

“I told her you would never forgive her.””

I stared at her.

“You told our daughter I would hate her?””

“I told her you would hate what happened.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You made her afraid of me.””

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“I panicked.””

“You always panic, and somehow everyone else pays for it.””

She looked away.

I left the coffee shop without saying goodbye.

When I arrived home, Emily was sitting on the front steps.

She looked up.

“You talked to Mom.””

I nodded.

“How much did she tell you?””

I sat beside her.

“Enough to know you were carrying this alone.””

Emily looked down.

“I didn’t want to hurt you.””

“You didn’t.””

“She said if you knew, you’d see me differently.””

I turned toward her.

“Emily, look at me.””

She did.

“You could tell me the worst thing in the world, and you would still be my daughter.””

Her eyes filled.

“I was so scared.””

“I know.””

“No, Dad.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t.””

The pain in her voice made me stop.

“I spent months thinking I ruined everything.””

She wiped her face.

“I lost Marcus. I lost my home. I lost my confidence. Then Mom kept telling me I was the reason everyone was stressed.””

I reached for her hand.

“I’m sorry.””

“You didn’t know.””

“I should have.””

That evening, Robert called.

I answered.

“Why did you message me?””

His voice was quiet.

“Because I should have done it years ago.””

“Tell me everything.””

A long pause.

Then he said:

“Daniel, Vanessa didn’t just move money.””

I waited.

“She changed the story of what happened.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means she made you believe I betrayed you.””

My grip tightened on the phone.

“Then who did?””

Robert went silent.

And when he finally spoke, his answer destroyed the last piece of the life I thought I knew.

“Daniel…”

May you like

His voice lowered.

“You did.””
