Chapter 14: The Last Lie

Vanessa chose the place where we had our first date.

A small restaurant near the park.

The same place where she once told me she wanted a future with me.

I almost turned around when I saw her sitting by the window.

Almost.

But I walked inside.

She looked up.

For a second, she smiled.

Then she remembered.

That smile disappeared.

“You came.””

I sat across from her.

“You said you needed to talk.””

She nodded.

“I do.””

I didn’t say anything.

For once, I wanted her to fill the silence.

She looked down at her hands.

“I know you hate me.””

“I don’t hate you.””

She looked surprised.

“I should.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because hate would mean I still don’t understand.””

Her eyes filled.

“And now you do?””

“Not everything.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

A long silence passed.

Then she whispered:

“I was wrong.””

Those three words were something I never thought I would hear.

Not from Vanessa.

“I spent years telling myself I was protecting everyone.””

She looked out the window.

“But really, I was protecting myself.””

I listened.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing control.””

She laughed quietly.

“Isn’t that a terrible thing to admit?””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“I knew.””

I stared at her.

“Why did you take it so far?””

Her face changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

“Because every time I fixed one problem, I created another.””

She looked at me.

“I lied about the company because I thought I could repair it.””

“You couldn’t.””

“No.””

She looked down.

“I made it worse.””

I waited.

“And then when Emily found out, I panicked again.””

“You hurt her.””

“I know.””

The answer was immediate.

No excuses.

No defense.

Just regret.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Because I knew you would choose her.””

I froze.

“What?””

“You would choose Emily.””

I stared at her.

“She’s our daughter.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“And I hated that I was jealous of my own child.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I thought if Emily needed me, I would still matter.””

I looked away.

Because that was the saddest part.

Not the money.

Not the documents.

The fact that Vanessa had been fighting for importance instead of love.

“Where are you staying?””

“A hotel.””

“Are you going to fight the legal case?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

That surprised me.

“No?””

“I don’t deserve to.””

She reached into her purse.

Then placed something on the table.

A flash drive.

“What is this?””

“Everything.””

I looked at it.

“Everything?””

“All the records. The accounts. The messages. The documents.””

“Why?””

“Because Emily deserves the truth.””

I studied her face.

For the first time in weeks, I saw the woman I remembered.

Not the person who manipulated everyone.

The person buried underneath.

“Why now?””

She looked down.

“Because I finally realized something.””

“What?””

“You cannot force someone to stay by making them afraid to leave.””

The words stayed with me.

Before I left, she called my name.

I stopped.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

“I’m sorry.””

I wanted to say something.

Anything.

But I couldn’t.

Because forgiveness was not the same as forgetting.

And healing was not the same as pretending nothing happened.

When I got home, Emily was waiting.

She looked at me.

“What did she say?””

I handed her the flash drive.

“She told the truth.””

Emily stared at it.

Then she asked:

“Do you think Mom can change?””

I looked toward the window.

Outside, the sun was setting.

“I don’t know.””

That night, we opened the files.

And among the documents was one final recording.

A recording Vanessa had never mentioned.

The date was from ten years ago.

The day everything began.

I pressed play.

May you like

And the first voice we heard wasn’t Vanessa’s.

It was mine.
