Chapter 11: The Mistake I Was Forced to Forget
I didn’t speak.
I couldn’t.
Robert’s words sat between us.
*You did.*
Three simple words.
But they felt impossible.
“I don’t understand.””
Robert sighed.
“I know.””
“No. Explain.””
“I tried to tell you before.””
“When?””
“After everything happened.””
I stood in my kitchen.
The same kitchen where Vanessa and I had cooked together for years.
The same kitchen where Emily used to sit on the counter and steal pieces of food while we made dinner.
Every memory felt contaminated.
“What happened?””
Robert was quiet.
Then he said:
“Ten years ago, you signed a document.””
My forehead tightened.
“I signed dozens of documents.””
“This one was different.””
“What was it?””
“A financial agreement.””
I closed my eyes.
“I don’t remember.””
“That’s because Vanessa made sure you wouldn’t.””
My stomach dropped.
“How?””
“She told you it was part of the company restructuring.””
I gripped the counter.
“And it wasn’t?””
“No.””
I waited.
“It was a transfer agreement.””
“To what?””
“Your personal assets.””
The room spun.
“What?””
Robert continued.
“Vanessa had been moving money because she was afraid of losing everything. She convinced you to sign papers without explaining what they really were.””
I felt sick.
“She manipulated me.””
“Yes.””
“But why did she blame you?””
“Because after you found out, you were furious.””
I remembered that year.
The stress.
The arguments.
The sleepless nights.
I remembered feeling betrayed.
But the details were blurry.
Too blurry.
“What happened after?””
Robert answered softly.
“You collapsed.””
I froze.
“What?””
“You had a breakdown.””
The words sounded strange.
Like they belonged to someone else.
“You were overwhelmed. Vanessa told everyone you were under too much pressure.””
I touched my forehead.
“I don’t remember.””
“I know.””
That scared me more than anything.
Not the money.
Not the lies.
The missing pieces of my own life.
“What did she do?””
“She took care of everything.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course she did.””
“She controlled what people knew. She told me to stay away because you would never forgive me.””
“And you did?””
“I was ashamed.””
Robert paused.
“And because I thought Emily was safe.””
My heart sank.
“What do you mean?””
“I saw how Vanessa treated her.””
I looked toward the stairs.
Where Emily was sleeping.
“She was always controlling her.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Robert’s voice broke slightly.
“Because I thought you knew.””
That sentence hurt.
Because maybe everyone thought I knew.
Maybe everyone assumed I saw what was happening.
But I didn’t.
Or worse.
I saw pieces and ignored them.
After the call ended, I sat alone in the dark.
Hours passed.
Then Emily found me.
“Dad?””
I looked up.
She stood there holding a box.
“What’s that?””
She walked closer.
“I found it in Mom’s closet.””
My heart started racing.
“What is it?””
She opened the box.
Inside were old documents.
Photographs.
Letters.
And one envelope.
My name was written across it.
Not printed.
Written.
My handwriting.
I picked it up.
“I wrote this?””
Emily nodded.
“I think so.””
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter.
A letter I had written ten years ago.
The first line made my hands shake.
*If I ever forget what happened, someone needs to remind me.*
I looked at Emily.
“What is this?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
I read the next lines.
*Vanessa keeps telling me I’m confused. She says I’m imagining things. But I know something is wrong.*
My breath caught.
The letter continued.
*If you are reading this, it means she succeeded in making me forget.*
I dropped the paper.
Emily covered her mouth.
“Dad…”
I looked at the date.
Ten years ago.
The same week everything changed.
Then I saw the final sentence.
May you like
The sentence that explained why Vanessa had spent years controlling everyone around her.
*The truth is hidden in the one place Vanessa thinks nobody will look.*
