Chapter 9: The Enemy Inside The Bank
Nobody moved.
The security guard stood at the entrance of the archive, breathing heavily.
His uniform was torn.
His face was pale.
But he wasn’t holding a weapon.
He looked afraid.
Thomas stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The guard swallowed.
“My name is Ethan.””
“Why should we believe you?””
Ethan looked at Noah.
“Because I knew your grandfather.””
Noah immediately looked suspicious.
“Everyone knew my grandfather.””
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
He pointed toward the old photograph.
“Not Richard Hale.””
The name made Noah look up.
“Then who?””
Ethan stepped closer.
“Your grandfather saved my life.””
Thomas watched him carefully.
“When?””
“Twenty years ago.””
Mr. Carter frowned.
“That was when the company collapsed.””
Ethan nodded.
“I was there.””
The room became quiet.
Noah looked at him.
“You knew my parents?””
Ethan looked down.
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
Too immediate.
Noah felt his chest tighten.
“Tell me.””
Ethan hesitated.
Thomas interrupted.
“Careful.””
But Noah turned.
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“I’m done waiting.””
Everyone became silent.
Noah looked at Ethan.
“I lost my parents.””
He held up the photograph.
“I lost my grandfather.””
He looked around the archive.
“And apparently everyone has been protecting me from the truth.””
His eyes hardened.
“I want the truth.””
Ethan looked at the nine-year-old boy standing in front of him.
And something in his expression changed.
Respect.
“You look like your mother.””
Noah froze.
“What?””
“Not your face.””
Ethan smiled sadly.
“Your courage.””
The words made Noah look away.
Ethan reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I was supposed to give this to Richard.””
Thomas looked surprised.
“What is that?””
Ethan handed it to Noah.
“Something your grandfather never received.””
Noah opened it carefully.
Inside was a single page.
Only a few sentences.
But they changed everything.
Richard,
If Noah is safe, then you succeeded.
But if Daniel finds him, tell him this:
The account is not the key.
The boy is.
Noah read the words twice.
“The boy?””
Mr. Carter looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan looked toward the ceiling.
“Daniel believed the invention was hidden somewhere.””
Thomas nodded.
“But it wasn’t.””
Ethan looked at Noah.
“It was inside your family.””
Noah stepped back.
“I don’t understand.””
“Your father created a system that required a personal verification key.””
Mr. Carter frowned.
“Impossible.””
Ethan shook his head.
“Not impossible.””
He looked at Noah.
“Your father designed it using his own family DNA.””
The room went silent.
Noah stared.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
Thomas whispered:
“That’s why Daniel needs him.””
A sudden crash echoed from above.
Everyone looked toward the ceiling.
Daniel had entered the bank.
The search was getting closer.
Ethan continued quickly.
“Your grandfather created the trust account because the system needed a safe place to activate.””
Noah looked at the old bank card.
“My card?””
Ethan nodded.
“The account wasn’t protecting money.””
“Then what was it protecting?””
Ethan looked directly at him.
“A message.””
Noah held the card tightly.
“What message?””
Before Ethan could answer, every screen in the archive turned on.
Daniel appeared on the monitors.
Not a recording.
A live feed.
He was standing inside the bank lobby.
Looking directly at the camera.
“Hello, Noah.””
The boy froze.
Daniel smiled.
“I know you can hear me.””
Thomas stepped in front of him.
Daniel continued.
“Your grandfather spent twenty years hiding you.””
A pause.
“But he made one mistake.””
The screen zoomed closer.
Daniel’s eyes became cold.
“He taught you to ask questions.””
Noah stared back.
Daniel leaned toward the camera.
“And now you’re finally old enough to hear the answer.””
The screen went black.
Then one final message appeared.
Not from Daniel.
From Richard.
A hidden file.
A title.
*THE TRUTH ABOUT NOAH’S FATHER*

Noah reached toward the screen.
And for the first time in his life, he was about to discover why his parents disappeared.
