Chapter 13: The Mother Who Never Stopped Looking

The world seemed to stop.

Noah stood in the middle of the archive, unable to move.

The woman at the doorway looked nothing like the pictures he had seen.

The photographs showed a young woman with bright eyes and a fearless smile.

This woman looked older.

Tired.

Like every year without him had taken something away.

But Noah knew.

Somehow, he knew.

“Mom?””

The word left his mouth before he could stop it.

The woman covered her face.

A broken sound escaped her.

Not a cry of sadness.

A cry of someone who had waited too long to hear one word.

“My baby…”

She stepped forward.

Then stopped.

She looked afraid.

Like she didn’t know if she was allowed to come closer.

Noah noticed.

And that hurt.

His entire life, he had imagined this moment.

His mother running toward him.

Holding him.

Telling him everything would be okay.

But instead, they stood several feet apart.

Like strangers.

Sarah wiped her tears.

“I don’t know if you remember me.””

Noah shook his head.

“I don’t.””

The honesty hurt her.

But she nodded.

“I know.””

Daniel watched from the side.

A small smile appeared on his face.

“This is what you wanted, isn’t it?””

Sarah turned.

“What?””

“You wanted him to know.””

Daniel looked at Noah.

“Now he does.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Get away from him.””

Daniel ignored him.

“Noah, ask your mother why she stayed away.””

Sarah’s face changed.

Noah looked at her.

The question had been living inside him for years.

“Why?””

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Because I thought it was the only way to keep you alive.””

Noah looked down.

“I thought you left me.””

The words were quiet.

But they hurt more than anger.

Sarah’s face broke.

“I know.””

She walked closer.

“I know what it looked like.””

She reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small worn photograph.

The same photograph from the recording.

A baby wrapped in a blanket.

Noah.

“I carried this every day.””

She touched the picture.

“Every single day.””

Noah looked at Thomas.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Thomas answered softly.

“Because Daniel was still searching.””

Sarah nodded.

“He never stopped.””

Daniel laughed.

“Don’t make me sound like a monster.””

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel shrugged.

“I was protecting what belonged to me.””

Sarah’s expression hardened.

“Nothing belonged to you.””

Daniel smiled.

“Your husband created something valuable.””

“My husband created something to help people.””

“And I created something from it.””

Noah looked confused.

“What does he mean?””

Sarah looked at him.

“Your father’s system was designed to expose criminals.””

She looked at Daniel.

“He wanted to use it to control them.””

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

Noah finally understood.

This was never about money.

It was about power.

Sarah moved closer.

“Your grandfather hid the account because it was the last piece Daniel needed.””

Noah looked at the card.

“The account activates the system?””

“Yes.””

“Why me?””

Sarah looked at him.

“Because your father believed no one should control the system.””

She paused.

“He designed it so only someone with his family’s trust could unlock it.””

Noah looked at his own hands.

“But I’m just a kid.””

Sarah smiled sadly.

“You were never just a kid.””

A sudden noise interrupted them.

The archive doors locked.

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at his phone.

Then smiled.

“It’s time.””

Thomas immediately became alert.

“What did you do?””

Daniel looked at Noah.

“I stopped pretending.””

The screens turned on.

A countdown appeared.

00:10:00

Mr. Carter stared.

“What is that?””

Daniel answered calmly.

“The final activation.””

Noah stepped back.

“You’re using me.””

Daniel looked at him.

“No.””

A pause.

“I’m giving you a choice.””

The countdown continued.

09:58.

Daniel walked toward the exit.

“Activate the system, and you learn everything.””

He looked at Sarah.

“Refuse…”

His smile returned.

“And your parents’ secret disappears forever.””

Noah looked at his mother.

Then at the countdown.

Then at the bank card in his hand.

May you like

Because for the first time in his life, the truth was within reach.

But it came with a price.
