Chapter 7: The Man Behind The Grandfather’s Name

Noah stared at the photograph.

The underground archive felt colder than before.

Not because of the darkness.

Not because of the steel walls.

Because the world Noah believed he understood was slowly falling apart.

His fingers traced the edge of the picture.

A younger version of his grandfather stood beside his parents.

But there was something strange.

His grandfather wasn’t wearing the simple clothes Noah remembered.

He was wearing a suit.

Standing in front of the same company building from the old photograph.

A man Noah barely recognized.

A man who looked powerful.

Important.

Almost untouchable.

“Who was he?”” Noah asked.

Nobody answered immediately.

Thomas looked at Mr. Carter.

Mr. Carter looked away.

That silence hurt more than any answer.

Noah lowered the photograph.

“You both know.””

Thomas finally spoke.

“Yes.””

“Then tell me.””

The boy’s voice cracked.

“My whole life, I thought my grandfather was just an old man who fixed watches.””

Thomas sighed.

“He wanted you to believe that.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted you to have a normal childhood.””

Noah laughed quietly.

But there was no happiness in it.

“A normal childhood?””

He looked down at his torn shoes.

“I lived in a tiny apartment. I wore donated clothes. I watched other kids get picked up by their parents.””

His voice became softer.

“And you’re telling me he was hiding all of this?””

Mr. Carter stepped forward.

“Your grandfather gave up everything to protect you.””

Noah looked at him.

“Protect me from what?””

Thomas picked up the photograph.

“From becoming a target.””

He turned it over.

The sentence written on the back remained visible.

*Before you learn who your enemy is, you must learn who I really was.*

Thomas placed the picture on the table.

“Your grandfather’s real name was not the name you knew.””

Noah froze.

“What?””

“He changed it after everything happened.””

Mr. Carter nodded slowly.

“I helped him.””

Noah looked between them.

“You knew?””

“I did.””

“And you never told me?””

Mr. Carter looked ashamed.

“Your grandfather made me promise.””

Noah stepped back.

Everyone had promises.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone except him.

“Who was my grandfather?””

Thomas took a deep breath.

“His name was Richard Hale.””

The name meant nothing to Noah.

But it meant something to Mr. Carter.

The manager looked at the floor.

“Richard Hale was one of the most respected financial experts in America.””

Noah stared.

“That was him?””

“Yes.””

“He built the company?””

“Yes.””

“And Daniel Voss stole it?””

Thomas nodded.

“But that is only half the story.””

Noah looked frustrated.

“There’s always another half.””

Thomas reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old newspaper clipping.

The headline was faded.

But the words were still readable.

*BUSINESS LEGEND DISAPPEARS AFTER FAMILY TRAGEDY*

Noah read the article.

Then stopped.

The date.

The year.

Everything matched.

The year his parents disappeared.

“My parents…”

Thomas nodded.

“They worked with Richard.””

Noah looked up.

“They weren’t just my parents?””

“No.””

“Then what were they?””

Thomas looked at the photograph.

“They were investigators.””

Noah frowned.

“Investigators?””

“They discovered Daniel Voss was using stolen technology to manipulate financial systems.””

Mr. Carter continued.

“They tried to expose him.””

Noah’s hands tightened.

“What happened?””

Thomas was quiet.

Then:

“Your parents vanished.””

The room became silent.

Noah looked down.

“Everyone said they abandoned me.””

Mr. Carter’s expression changed.

“They never abandoned you.””

“Then why did nobody tell me?””

“Because Daniel was watching.””

Noah looked at the key.

The old metal key suddenly felt heavier.

“What does this open?””

Thomas looked toward the archive shelves.

“Something your grandfather hid before he disappeared.””

Noah walked closer.

There were dozens of old boxes.

Files.

Records.

Photographs.

All hidden beneath the bank.

“Why leave it here?””

“Because Daniel would never search where he believed he already owned everything.””

A sound interrupted them.

Footsteps.

Above them.

Thomas immediately turned.

“He found the entrance.””

Mr. Carter looked worried.

“How?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

Daniel had always been one step ahead.

Noah grabbed the photograph.

“What do we do?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Find what your grandfather left behind.””

“And then?””

Thomas stared toward the locked archive door.

“Then we survive long enough to reveal it.””

The footsteps grew louder.

A shadow appeared beneath the door.

Then a voice spoke.

“Richard always underestimated one thing.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel.

Standing on the other side.

“He thought hiding the truth would protect Noah.””

A pause.

“But secrets don’t protect people.””

The door handle moved.

May you like

Daniel whispered:

“They only make the truth more valuable.””
