Chapter 8: The File That Changed Everything

The archive door shook.

Once.

Twice.

Then it stopped.

Daniel wasn’t forcing his way inside.

He was waiting.

That scared Thomas more.

“He wants us to panic,” Thomas whispered.

Noah looked around the room.

“Why?””

“Because scared people make mistakes.””

Noah looked at the shelves.

Thousands of documents surrounded them.

His grandfather had spent years hiding this place.

Not because he wanted power.

Because he was afraid.

Noah touched one of the boxes.

A label was attached.

*R. HALE — PERSONAL RECORDS*

His heart started beating faster.

“This one.””

Thomas looked.

“Are you sure?””

Noah nodded.

“I think so.””

He opened the box.

Inside were old documents.

A watch.

Several photographs.

And a small cassette recorder.

Noah picked it up.

“My grandfather used this?””

Thomas’s expression changed.

“Yes.””

Noah pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then a familiar voice appeared.

His grandfather.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

“Noah…”

The boy stopped breathing.

Hearing that voice again hurt.

“My dear boy.””

Tears immediately filled Noah’s eyes.

“If you are hearing this, then the truth has finally found you.””

Mr. Carter looked away.

Thomas remained completely still.

Richard’s recording continued.

“I wanted to tell you everything. Every day.””

A pause.

“But every day I chose your safety over my honesty.””

Noah sat down.

His hands trembled.

“I am sorry.””

The words hit him harder than expected.

His grandfather had never apologized before.

Not because he didn’t care.

Because he always seemed certain.

But now Noah heard something different.

Fear.

“I need you to understand something.””

The recording continued.

“Daniel Voss did not destroy my company because of money.””

Noah looked at Thomas.

“Then why?””

Richard answered from the recording.

“Because he wanted what your father created.””

The room went silent.

Noah leaned closer.

“Your father discovered a method to track illegal financial transfers before they happened.””

Mr. Carter whispered:

“Predictive security.””

Richard continued.

“A system that could expose corruption before criminals could hide it.””

Noah looked at the shelves.

“So Daniel wanted the invention.””

“Yes.””

“And my parents?””

A long silence came from the recording.

Then Richard spoke.

“Your parents tried to protect the system.””

Noah closed his eyes.

“From Daniel?””

“Yes.””

The recording crackled.

“But Daniel wasn’t working alone.””

Thomas suddenly looked tense.

“What?””

Richard continued.

“There was someone inside our organization.””

Mr. Carter looked shocked.

“Someone close.””

Noah listened carefully.

“Someone we trusted.””

The recording stopped.

Everyone froze.

Then a second message appeared on the recorder.

A hidden file.

Thomas looked at it.

“No.””

“What?”” Noah asked.

Thomas stared.

“That wasn’t supposed to exist.””

Mr. Carter looked confused.

“What is it?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

Noah pressed play.

A new voice appeared.

Not his grandfather.

Someone younger.

A woman.

Noah froze.

Because he had heard that voice before.

Only once.

In an old voicemail his grandfather saved.

“Richard…”

The woman sounded scared.

“If anything happens to us, promise me you will protect Noah.””

Noah stood.

“Who is that?””

Thomas looked at him.

His face had lost all color.

“That’s your mother.””

Noah stopped.

His mother.

A person who existed only in a few photographs.

A voice he never remembered hearing.

The recording continued.

“Daniel knows about the child.””

A pause.

“He knows Noah survived.””

Noah’s breathing changed.

“He knows about me?””

Thomas nodded slowly.

The woman’s voice became desperate.

“Richard, you cannot let him find Noah. The boy is the only person who can prove what happened.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then the archive lights suddenly switched off.

Darkness surrounded them.

A door opened somewhere in the hallway.

Mr. Carter whispered:

“We’re not alone.””

Thomas grabbed Noah’s shoulder.

“Stay behind me.””

A figure stepped into the archive.

Not Daniel.

Someone else.

Someone holding a flashlight.

Someone who looked terrified.

The person raised both hands.

“Wait.””

Noah stared.

Because he recognized the voice.

It was the security guard from earlier.

The one who had warned them.

But now he said something that changed everything.

“Your grandfather was wrong.””

Thomas narrowed his eyes.

“About what?””

The guard looked directly at Noah.

“Daniel Voss isn’t the only person who wants you.””

May you like

A pause.

“He’s just the only one who wants you alive.””
