Chapter 7: The Father Who Vanished

Lily couldn’t move.

For two years, she had imagined this moment.

She had imagined her mother walking through a door.

She had imagined hearing Emily’s voice again.

She had imagined running into her mother’s arms and never letting go.

But she had never imagined him.

Her father.

The man from the old photographs.

The man she barely remembered.

“Lily.””

His voice cracked.

Not with anger.

With pain.

She stared at him from across the abandoned room.

“You’re alive.””

The man swallowed.

“Yes.””

Her eyes filled with confusion.

“Where have you been?””

He looked down.

That answer hurt more than anything.

Because silence was sometimes the loudest confession.

“My name is Michael Carter.””

Lily stepped back.

“I know who you are.””

Michael looked surprised.

“You do?””

“My mom had pictures.””

A painful expression crossed his face.

“She kept them?””

“She kept everything.””

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Lily held up the letter.

“She said someone I trusted helped her.””

Michael’s face changed.

“Your mother wrote you a letter?””

Lily nodded.

“She said I would know who it was.””

Michael closed his eyes.

Because he already knew.

“What did she tell you?””

Lily tightened her grip.

“She said someone promised to protect me.””

Michael looked toward the door.

“We have to leave.””

“No.””

The word surprised him.

Lily stood straighter.

“I’m tired of people telling me what to do.””

Michael stared at her.

“You sound exactly like your mother.””

“She wanted me to know the truth.””

“She wanted you safe.””

“She wanted both.””

The room became quiet.

Michael looked older than the man in the photographs.

His hair was darker then.

His smile had been easier.

Now he looked like someone who had spent years running from something.

“I didn’t abandon you.””

Lily’s expression hardened.

“Everyone said you did.””

“They were wrong.””

“Then why did you disappear?””

Michael looked away.

“Because they made me.””

“Who?””

Before he could answer, a noise came from outside.

Footsteps.

Michael immediately turned.

“They found us.””

Lily’s fear returned.

“Who?””

“People who don’t want you knowing what happened to your mother.””

He grabbed her hand.

For the first time, Lily didn’t pull away.

They moved through the back exit of the building.

Rain poured over them.

A black car waited near the road.

Michael pushed Lily behind him.

“Stay close.””

They ran.

Across the city, Detective Harrison finally received the location he had been waiting for.

Sarah had tracked Collins’ phone.

The signal came from the old archive building.

But when Harrison arrived, it was empty.

Almost.

On the floor, he found a broken picture frame.

Inside was a photograph of Emily.

And beside her...

Michael Carter.

Harrison stared.

Michael Carter had been officially declared missing two years ago.

Everyone believed he had abandoned Emily and Lily before Emily disappeared.

But now the evidence told a different story.

His phone rang.

This time, it was Michael.

Harrison answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Daniel.””

Harrison recognized the voice.

“Michael Carter.””

Sarah looked at him.

“You found him?””

“No.””

Harrison listened.

“Where is Lily?””

“With me.””

The relief lasted only a second.

Then anger replaced it.

“You took her?””

“No.””

Michael’s voice shook.

“I saved her.””

Harrison looked at the rain outside.

“Explain.””

“I don’t have time.””

“Then make time.””

Michael breathed heavily.

“Emily didn’t disappear because she wanted to leave.””

“I know.””

“No, Daniel.””

His voice became urgent.

“You don’t know.””

A pause.

“She was taken.””

Harrison went silent.

“By who?””

Michael hesitated.

Then whispered:

“By someone inside your investigation.””

Harrison looked toward Sarah.

He already knew.

“Collins?””

Michael didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The silence was enough.

“Where is Emily?””

Another pause.

Then Michael said something that changed everything.

“She’s been alive this whole time.””

Harrison’s heart stopped.

“Where?””

Michael lowered his voice.

“I can take you there.””

Before Harrison could respond, a loud crash came through the phone.

Someone shouting.

Then Michael’s voice.

“Run, Lily!””

The call cut off.

Harrison immediately moved.

Because he knew one thing.

Lily had found her father.

But someone else had found them too.
