Chapter 12: The Woman Behind the Mask

Daniel felt like the entire world had shifted.

Two Eveyln Harrisons.

Two impossible truths.

One person had raised him.

Another person was standing downstairs.

And somehow, both were connected.

The woman beside the fireplace remained calm.

She didn’t look surprised.

That frightened him more than anything.

“You knew this would happen.””

She looked at him.

“Yes.””

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“Explain.””

Before she could answer, the front door opened.

The woman downstairs walked into the room.

Daniel stared.

The resemblance was impossible.

Same eyes.

Same voice.

Same controlled expression.

But something was different.

The woman downstairs looked exhausted.

Broken.

“Daniel.””

He stepped back.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at Evelyn.

Then back at him.

“I’m your mother.””

The room went silent.

Daniel laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because nothing made sense anymore.

“I have spent the last twenty minutes discovering my entire life is a lie.””

He looked between them.

“And now I have two mothers?””

The woman downstairs approached slowly.

“My name is Clara.””

Evelyn interrupted.

“Don’t listen to her.””

Daniel turned sharply.

“Why?””

Evelyn looked at Clara.

“Because she’s the reason everything started.””

Clara’s eyes filled with pain.

“That’s not true.””

“Isn’t it?””

Clara looked at Daniel.

“I knew your father.””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“You knew her?””

Richard nodded.

“She was involved.””

Daniel’s frustration exploded.

“Everyone was involved.””

He pointed at them.

“Everyone knew something except me.””

Nobody answered.

Then Clara spoke.

“I was Evelyn’s sister.””

Daniel froze.

The room became quiet.

“Sister?””

Clara nodded.

“We were twins.””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“That’s why…”

“Yes,” Clara said.

“She used my identity.””

Evelyn’s expression changed.

For the first time, fear appeared.

Daniel understood.

“She pretended to be you.””

Clara nodded.

“For years.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Your mother died when you were young.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Clara looked down.

“Evelyn took my life from me.””

The truth came out slowly.

Evelyn Harrison had built her entire empire by stealing identities, controlling information, and manipulating everyone around her.

When Clara discovered what her sister was doing, she tried to expose her.

But Evelyn was always ahead.

She erased Clara’s existence.

She made everyone believe Clara was unstable.

Then she took her place.

Including as Daniel’s mother.

Daniel looked at the woman who raised him.

“You knew.””

Evelyn didn’t deny it.

“I knew you were safer with me.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with anger.

“You stole my entire life.””

“No.””

Her voice softened.

“I gave you one.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t get to call that love.””

For the first time, Evelyn looked wounded.

Then the lights suddenly went out.

Everyone froze.

A second later, glass shattered.

Someone had entered.

Richard pulled Daniel down.

A gunshot echoed through the room.

Panic exploded.

When the emergency lights turned on, everyone looked around.

The person holding the weapon wasn’t a stranger.

It was Mark Collins.

He stood near the doorway.

His face was calm.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel stared.

“Mark?””

Collins looked at him.

“I didn’t want it to end this way.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You were always weak.””

Collins smiled sadly.

“And you were always too trusting.””

Daniel moved between them.

“Why?””

Collins looked at him.

“Because your mother was right about one thing.””

“What?””

Collins raised the weapon.

“Some truths destroy everyone who discovers them.””

Then he looked at Daniel.

“And you just discovered the biggest one.””

He pointed toward the memory card in Daniel’s hand.

“Give me the evidence.””

Daniel tightened his grip.

“No.””

Collins sighed.

“I was hoping you’d say that.””

The sound of approaching sirens filled the distance.

Collins looked toward the window.

Then back at Daniel.

“Before tonight ends, you’ll learn the final secret.””

Daniel stared.

“What secret?””

Collins smiled.

“The person who started all of this…”

He stepped backward into the darkness.

“Is not Evelyn.””

A pause.

“Not Thomas.””

“Not me.””

Daniel watched him disappear.

And for the first time, he wondered if the truth he had spent two years searching for…

Was something even more dangerous than the lies.
