Chapter 13: The Final Piece of the Puzzle

The sound of sirens grew louder.

Red and blue lights flashed across the windows of the old estate.

But Daniel Harrison barely noticed.

His mind was trapped somewhere else.

A place filled with impossible questions.

Who was his real mother?

Who had been lying to him?

And why did every path lead back to the same terrible truth?

Mark Collins was gone.

But his final words remained.

*The person who started all of this is not Evelyn.*

Daniel looked at the memory card in his hand.

The evidence everyone had killed for.

The thing Emily risked everything to protect.

“What is on this?”” he asked.

Nobody answered.

Not Evelyn.

Not Clara.

Not Richard.

That silence told him enough.

“You all know.””

Richard looked away.

Clara lowered her eyes.

Finally, Emily’s voice came through the phone.

Daniel had forgotten she was still connected.

“Daniel.””

He answered immediately.

“Emily, what is happening?””

A long pause.

Then:

“I should have told you sooner.””

His chest tightened.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“I know.””

“Two years ago, you disappeared. My father disappeared. My entire life was built on secrets.””

Emily’s voice trembled.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone says that.””

“And everyone failed.””

The honesty stopped him.

Emily continued.

“The memory card contains the original foundation records.””

“Financial records?””

“More than that.””

Daniel looked at the others.

“What else?””

“Names.””

The room became silent.

“Names of everyone involved.””

Daniel stared at Evelyn.

She looked away.

“Politicians.””

“Business leaders.””

“Law enforcement officials.””

Emily’s voice dropped.

“People who would destroy anyone who exposed them.””

Daniel looked at the memory card.

“And the person who started it?””

Emily didn’t answer.

He already knew.

There was another secret.

“Emily.””

Her voice became softer.

“Daniel, the foundation was not created by Thomas Whitmore.””

Everyone looked up.

“What?””

“The Whitmore Foundation was originally created by your father.””

Daniel turned toward Richard.

Richard closed his eyes.

“No.””

Emily continued.

“Your father wanted to build something that helped people.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Then how did Evelyn become involved?””

Richard finally spoke.

“Because I trusted her.””

The words were painful.

“I thought she could help manage the foundation.””

Daniel stared.

“And she changed it.””

Richard nodded.

“She saw what it could become.””

“A machine.””

“Yes.””

The pieces started connecting.

The charity.

The money.

The disappearances.

The lies.

Evelyn didn’t create the opportunity.

She took it.

But Daniel still didn’t understand one thing.

“Why me?””

Everyone became quiet.

Richard looked at him.

“Because you were the only person she couldn’t control.””

Daniel frowned.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does.””

Richard stepped closer.

“You became a detective because you wanted justice.””

A sad smile appeared.

“She spent years trying to understand why you cared more about truth than power.””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“And you hated that.””

Evelyn didn’t respond.

But her silence answered.

Then Emily said something that changed everything.

“There is one more thing on that memory card.””

Daniel looked at the device.

“What?””

“A video.””

“From who?””

Emily hesitated.

“Your father.””

Richard’s face changed.

“I never recorded anything.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Did you?””

Richard slowly shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel inserted the memory card into the laptop on the desk.

A single file appeared.

Created date:

Two years ago.

The night Emily disappeared.

Everyone gathered around.

Daniel clicked play.

The screen showed a dark room.

A man sat in front of the camera.

Daniel immediately recognized him.

His father.

Richard.

But this recording was different.

Richard looked frightened.

“If you are watching this, then something happened.””

The video continued.

“I need you to understand something.””

He looked directly into the camera.

“Evelyn is not the person you should fear.””

Daniel froze.

The room became silent.

The recording continued.

“She was manipulated too.””

Everyone stared at each other.

Richard’s face on the screen looked exhausted.

“The person controlling everything is someone we never considered.””

Daniel leaned closer.

The video flickered.

Then Richard spoke the final words.

“The person who built this entire operation…”

A pause.

“Was someone inside our own family.””

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From an unknown number.

*You finally found the truth.*

A second message followed.

*Now find the person who killed your father.*

Daniel looked at Richard.

But Richard was already staring at the phone.

May you like

Because he knew.

The truth had just opened another door.
